No need for a Google Search battle. I like it more because it's american/soviet. The end.

Saying the F-111 is better than the Su-24 is like saying the A-10 is better than the B-52 - Why compare them ?

Well, for a start they're a hell of a lot more comparable than an A-10 is to a B-52.

They're both fighter-bombers, they both are meant to infiltrate an enemy's airspace by nap of the earth flying and high speed, they both have a crew of two, I mean this list can go on and on. The list of differences would be shorter. You can forgive people for making comparisons.

Since he already updated the time for the announcement, this just means he is watching, and laughing. ;)

True (Although they're more Attack aircraft than fighter-bombers, with the Aadvarak doubling as a medium bomber). Comparisons are fine, I was just troubled by the whole "copy of one another" and "better at one's role" thing, since they're neither copied nor have the same use.

Excuse me sir but you are completely wrong.

First, the Su-24 is not an imitation of the F-111, just like the Tu-160 is not an imitation of the B-1. It's simply different designers finding the same solution to the same problems.

Also, even comparing the two aircraft makes no sense. Despite a similar appearance they weren't intended for the same roles. The Su-24 wasn't meant to be very long ranged, as its Russian nickname implies - "Frontline Bomber". It was also intended to carry cruise missiles, as those are a very important element of the Russian strategy, and greatly increase the delivery range, while the Americans believe in precision bomb strikes.

Yes, their roles were a little different (nowhere near as different as you seem to think though). The Su-24 was built for a similar purpose, but in accordance with Soviet doctrine (we didn't use our assets the same way). The Variable Geometry wings were added to the design because of the F-111, however.

So no, it wasn't a carbon copy like the Tu-4, but it "borrowed" some design elements and both were strike aircraft intended to be used according to their respective doctrines.

I wouldn't shun a Fencer one was announced shortly by Leatherneck though... While they are at the whole variable-geometry thing...

You do quality work, you'll get people's attention.

All this teasing and stalling wouldn't really work this well before the 21.

Damn, I thought "European Standard Time" ... (to less sleep)

Why a time zone of north eastern America? LN Simulations is based in Poland, and IIRC with nobody coming from the states. Maybe a announcement by Wags?

First production models carried the AN/ALS-23 IRST (infra-red) system. It was probably of dubious usability since it was later replaced by the TCS system which was an optical system, but normally operated as slaved by the radar to identify the target from long range (in good visibility conditions only). The F-14D had both in a dual chin pod so maybe the IRST wasn't completely useless (but seems to have been used for purposes other than A2A like navigation at night or low visibility, air to ground search, etc.). In any case, neither could be used to launch a Phoenix, AFAIK, which wouldn't make much sense since they couldn't provide target range. Having said that, if the Phoenix really supported the rumored "flyout" mode, perhaps it could have technically been queued in direction by the IRST or even TCS (though, searching for a target with TCS seems too far fetched), but that would seem like a potential waste of a very expensive missile. Too bad the weapon employment manuals are still classified, I suppose.

CHEERS!

Appreciate the well written explanation...

For the record, I seem to recall Rudel is a Yank (anybody feel free to correct me If I'm wrong) and If he's doing all gfx job on his side of Atlantic, EST sounds reasonable.

I thought Rudel is in Florida, which if he is, gives legitimacy to the EST as a time zone for posting :)
