ChoSeungWan Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 How will the human multicrew be implemented to make pilots actually want a player RIO instead of an AI? Is there not a danger that if you can easily control the AI from the pilot seat that no one wants a human RIO? This is the case with multi-crewed tanks in Red Orchestra 2.
Hadwell Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 so true, the job of the rio is pretty redundant with today's tech. doesn't change the fact that it's a lot more of an experience to fly with a human rio, RO2 is a lot faster paced and tanks in it seem kinda secondary... Grundar Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 A human RIO is a second pair of eyes, it increases your situational awareness greatly. Maybe if the RIO AI is prescient and sees absolutely everything it will be redundant to have a human RIO, but where is the fun in that!
TAW_Blaze Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Considering the amount of radio commands I would need to give via keybinds there's probably no chance the AI will ever be competitive with a good human.
Jerkzilla Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Considering the amount of radio commands I would need to give via keybinds there's probably no chance the AI will ever be competitive with a good human. They could do special modes for the RIO. Like put him in "dogfight mode" or something where he doesn't bother with radar at all and will give you rough directions to nearby enemies, like "left rear, high", or clock positions. Or in BVR, specific bindable commands like scan left, right, high, or low or whatever. If it's compatible with third party voice controls, we won't have to bind anything, as long as we're intelligible. And it's not like we'd get away with mumbling with a human RIO anyway :D

At minimum I need an advanced speech recognition software that can comprehend complex brevity calls and then do what I wanted him to do after it made sense of it. If it can of course, because a guy can always ask questions if something's unclear, but I wonder what the code would do. 404 not found :D
King_Hrothgar Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 DCS AI is omniscient but also really dumb. How that balances out for a RIO is hard to say at this time. I think we'll have to wait and see. That said, I can tell you right now that no matter how good or bad the AI is, most F-14's in MP will be flown with an AI RIO. Why? Cause that's just how people are. It's the same thing with gunners in RoF and BoS. Other than some well known pilot/gunner pairs, most people fly solo. The same will be true here too.
ChoSeungWan Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 I think there should be an incentive to not fly solo.
KeyCat Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 Human ROI (i.e multi crew) is the selling point for me and I will be happy to take the back seat nad flip the switches while my friend handle the stick. /KC

I guess, too few people would find enough satisfaction in taking on the RIO function, no matter how hard, authentic and engaging it is. I would still want a real person in the back though. Just don't ask me what role i prefer ;) As for the AI, except for calling out bandit/bogie and it's positions, fuel states, AC checks (altitude, airspeed), it doesn't need to be all that smart, if it can be given simple commands. Like scan parameters (azimuth-bar), scan range, scan mod, scan direction (high-low, port-starboard). Targeting and firing of long range weapons. ECM and decoy deployment. It should be able to do all these things without input though, with the human aviator overriding through either direct orders, manual controls in the front seat, or "stand by" orders. Dudikoff Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) If RIO AI fails, there's always the fallback seat-switch option like in the good old Fleet Defender days - turn on the autopilot and search for targets manually. Gets tricky up close, of course, or worse still with some incoming missiles :) Edited March 11, 2015 by Dudikoff i386DX40@42 MHz w/i387 CP, 4 MB RAM (8*512 kB), Trident 8900C 1 MB w/16-bit RAMDAC ISA, Quantum 340 MB UDMA33, SB 16, DOS 6.22 w/QEMM + Win3.11CE, Quickshot 1btn 2axis, Numpad as hat. 2 FPH on a good day, 1 FPH avg. ChoSeungWan Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 RIO would be my first choice actually, don't have to worry about flying so I can enjoy the new EDGE scenery :) And twiddle knobs like a mad scientist...
outlawal2 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 There are many folks that have this hobby and do so alone.. (I am one of them) Absolutely NONE of my friends are flight simmers so an AI RIO is a MUST for me... And I would bet that the majority will fit into that column as well... Would it be BETTER to have a friend as a RIO of course.. Just not an option for many of us.. "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
VincentLaw Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I am hoping it will be viable in single player to be a dedicated RIO with an AI pilot. In the Huey you can swap to the gunner seats, but it is not really possible to do an entire mission as a door gunner because the AI autopilot won't follow waypoints. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

ED Team NineLine Posted March 11, 2015 ED Team Posted March 11, 2015 Ok, back to the OP, if the F-14 is anything like aircraft right now, you will only reap the benefits of human interaction in the cockpit. We no the AI is not the best at a number of things, although their super human vision may trump a lot of their other short comings. I think with the hardcore crowd we have here, a Human RIO is going to be way more popular. Forum Rules • My YouTube • My Discord - NineLine#0440• **How to Report a Bug**
