Pineapple Pete Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 DCS has renewed my interest in the world of flight sims. I quite impressed with the work and dedication of the developers. Unfortunately for me the learning curve is steeper than my time will allow. There is a lot of jargon and shorthand speak to be found here on the forums and I am impressed with the average fellows grasp of all things internal to DCS, video cards, ad infinitum. Is there a comprehensive place where a neanderthal such as myself can learn what it takes to really enjoy this game to it's highest? Having said that I find the the supplied manuals are lacking the in depth of detail I seem to need. I understand the need for brevity in these publications by the way. Just wondering, that's all. Thanks  It is always best to not fly too fast or fly too slow. So I fly half fast. :D
McBlemmen Posted April 1, 2015 Posted April 1, 2015 So you're asking if there's a place where you can learn the ins and outs of DCS? You're there.

Razgriz1 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 (edited) If I recall correctly there're a couple of quick introduction guides in Steam too, go check them. They don't go into detail but could be a good way to the basics. I also agree the ingame training could be better (FC3, I'm looking at you) but usually that's where you want to start. I prefer the interactive tutorials to just watching videos/reading, at least for me it's easier to remember where's everything when you are actually clicking in the cockpit yourself. BRAVO_16 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Flaming Cliffs 3 is a good place to start in my opinion. Most of the interactivity is toned down a bit, and the aircraft systems are simplified. Once you are comfortable with FC3, then choose a module with a fully interactive cockpit and train on it until you feel comfortable. I found these videos on the F-15C's radar extremely informative and it gave me an in depth understanding of the system. If you prefer the Su-27, then the same goes for these videos on its systems. As for everything DCS, reading is what you'll do most. For me that is part of the fun. Maintain thy airspeed lest the ground rise up and smite thee!
AtaliaA1 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 The Videos and Documents Sticky has links to some of the best youtube training available. It's under the A10 Section but covers all module when U get to the youtube link. This was a Boutique Builder iBuypower rig. tale Posted April 4, 2015 Posted April 4, 2015 You might be interested in this video I recently made explaining a basic concept: waypoints and navigation modes. Flying is fantastic, but add a few missiles and explosions and it becomes addictive. --------- http://www.youtube.com/c/taletoul
Jamovich Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 I'd start with FC3 for about 100 hours (su 25t along with the interactive guides) then progress to the p51 followed by either the f86 or MiG 15 then to the MiG 21 (interactive guides are well made for it) for another 200 - 300 hours +. I guess then you would be ready to take on the a-10/blackshark
Catastrophy Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 The interactive guides (training missions) worked outstandingly well for me. SU25t is quite simple and the Ka-50 (module) interactives were crucial in understanding the different systems and how to use them so you can fly, navigate and find stuff to kill.
Razgriz1 Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 FC3 needs updated training imho, it seems we all agree it's the best place to start learning since it has simplified systems yet it has probably the worst training of all modules. With this I'm not saying the included training is bad, it's just not as good as it should be considering it is where most of the new players will start learning. The Su27 and the F15 should at least have the same level of interactive missions as the 25t. That aside I will add that after you get the hang of FC3 (I recommend playing the sp campaign missions ) if you want to try a EFM module I would suggest the F86 or the P51. Both are excellent for beginners (like you and me) because they don't have complex systems to manage and are generally easy to operate. The Sabre is ridiculously easy to fly (you almost start it up using one switch) but the P51 would be the best to practice with WWII aircraft.
kontiuka Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 The Su27 and the F15 should at least have the same level of interactive missions as the 25t.I believe if you look in the single missions folder of the Su-27, you'll see training missions.
Razgriz1 Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Yeah, can't check right now but I think you're right now that you mention it. I believe they came with the new standalone module but I'm wasn't 100% sure FC3 owners got them. That's where I would start learning.
Armkreuz Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 Well I have purchased the aircraft. I got the head tracking system. Got myself a nice monitor. Was all ready to do a lot of down and dirty fighting in my new BF 109, FW-190 or numerous others I have purchased. I got the hang of taking off. I hardly ever crash on take-off anymore. I learned to fly these beautiful, well models beasts. One problem though. I can't find a damn soul to fight on multiplayer. I will fly around for 35 to 40 minutes and never see a soul. Not even an AI. So my question is. What the hell is the difference from Microsoft flight simulator. If finding someone online to fight is this difficult, OR if you have to weed through 50 servers that have only 1 person in each, then it seems to me I have purchased a really expensive version of Microsoft Flight Simulator. Just the way I see it. I HOPE this changes or people will lose interest. I am all for the realism. I LOVE being able to go through the startup. I LOVE the realistic flight models. Just what I was looking for, but if I can't use what I have learned and shoot at someone, then what's the point. And lets be frank here. There are not enough of us "realism weirdos" to keep it alive. I hope someone listens or DCS will go the way of the other 40 flight sims over the years. AND FOR GODS SAKE....Please make the dang thing where you can use your favorite skin on multiplayer, even if the other guys can't see it. At least give us that. That's my rant. Do with it what you will.
Illusive Tabby Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 (edited) DCS For dummies? *Raises hand* I can atleast take off and land....most of the time. But then, working with simply a HOTAS (Saitek X52 pro) and nothing else but the M&K, well, I am happy with what I've managed. Looking forward to when I save up enough money for a Rift. ctguy1955 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 There are so many things to learn. Not just about the mods but the settings. Aspect ratios, curves best suited for brakes and throttle and most of the time, My weapon release button wont work for some reason. I just downloaded the new version and for the first time, the open beta. I love this flight sim and its the BEST !!!!!!!!!
Illusive Tabby Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 It is very good, just flew the F-15C and I DID land, so I still can do that. Next step is to learn to not be shaky being the stick.

Do with it what you will. If you can't find someone to fight, you're not searching. The 104th server is almost ever filled with >25 people on it. TAW pub is always over >20 people online. And if that standard is too high for you (it is, for me!), make your own mission with lots of enemies. The flight models of the AI are basic, but they DO react on threat. Adequate..!

Do with it what you will. If you're interested in ww2 multiplayer action there are a good couple of servers to check out - Dogs of War (DoW), Burning Skies, and my squads server 9./JG27 (formerly hosted by the ACG server). DoW is more popular in the US timezone and the 9./JG27 and Burning Skies are more popular in EU timezone. I believe all 3 are running missions that include AI - I know our dogfight mission does (depending on number of players online). I'll drop some links to our website and the DoW website below... and see if I can find a link for the Burning Skies chaps. 9./JG27 website: http://www.9jg27.com/ DoW website: http://www.webfortress.com/dogsofwar/ [edit] Burning Skies FB page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Burning-Skies-DCS-WWII-Server/724145110991574 PS: Something to bear in mind is that the ww2 stuff is slowing growing in DCS and we expect it to continue to grow with the implementation of DCS 2.0 and with the introduction of the Thunderbolt and Spitfire mks (IX and XIV). ATAG_chair1 Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 communication problem I am using mission editor to create simple missions. I can not get the  communications option to control the other flight members?
HornedGod Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 If you're interested in ww2 multiplayer action there are a good couple of servers to check out - Dogs of War (DoW), Burning Skies, and my squads server 9./JG27 (formerly hosted by the ACG server) Your best bet is to try the 9./JG27 server first (called AIRQUAKE). Unfortunately, it's only generally populated on the weekends, but when it is, there is always at least half a dozen, if not 10+ on it most of the time. It also has some mods that aid in the LoD issue (i.e. you get to spot far away targets slightly easier). After that cut your teeth on the DoW servers (bit more difficult as the play areas are larger with a smaller player count and no LoD mod to help, i.e. you have to disable the JG27 mod first).
fastfreddie Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Start with the F-86, P-51, or Mig 15 which are really easy to get in the air, fly, and land. If you like WWII birds then go for the Dora or K-4. I guess Huey is the least complex helicopter to fly out of the 3 available. Just make sure you have a decent computer with a joystick and rudder ... I cringe every time I see someone trying to takeoff in German planes without a rudder. If you totally unsure just wait till there is another sale and pick up a couple of them for under $30.
