SharpeXB Posted May 3, 2015 Author Posted May 3, 2015 (edited) Awesome, is that from the U28D590D? Yes not bad performance considering 4K quadruples the pixels. rcjonessnp175 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I'm sure dcs 2.0 will be awesome performance in 4k and such. I'm wondering still with all that pretty graphics how it will perform when your in an actual combat scenario not just a single ship flying alone on empty map. SharpeXB Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 (edited) I'm wondering still with all that pretty graphics how it will perform when your in an actual combat scenario not just a single ship flying alone on empty map. I think DCS gets CPU limited in large scenarios. Not sure exactly. Even with the 980 I can get a drop down to 25 in certain situations regardless of the graphic settings. Like for example, the Su-27 mission "Blockade". From the ramp start, look left and it will drop. The Red Tails Dogfight had some good numbers, I'm certain the low FPS is firing the P-51 guns. rcjonessnp175 Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Yup same here overall good performance but when those cpu scenarios kick in ya kind of a kick in the junk. But it is a simulator so I guess that is expectedand those cpu limitations probably aren't dependant on your screen resolution. I ran some tests in X-Plane and surprisingly the rate only drops by 5fps in the air and 10 on the ground when going from 1080p to 4K i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
BitMaster Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 The game just "flies" better with high fps count. I would aim for 50-60+ fps while knowing that some scenarios punch it down to 25, no matter what GPU(s) you have as it is likely CPU dependant and that horse is well beaten to death already. We can hope that EDGE/DX11 eliminates that bottleneck, despite it will stay single-core at it's very engine. If not, then that will still be a difficult task for the single core.... Till now we have mostly or only seen Edge scenes with low object count and no full scale battlefield. Let's wait and see.... I am curious about Edge, when and what it will achieve as there is such a Hype about it. SharpeXB Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 For a better frame rate, what also works very well is to just run at 1440x2560 and upscale to 4K. That looks extremely good and runs smoother. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
Dav IRL Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 As stunning as Edge looks the frame rate during combat really needs to improve. 4.8 I7, 1080, TMW&T, SSD, VKB MK.IV.
sobek Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 As stunning as Edge looks the frame rate during combat really needs to improve. Flown much in EDGE lately, have you? ;) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
fltsimbuff Posted May 7, 2015 Posted May 7, 2015 Well its true fps in combat needs to improve. We have been shown empty map flights with exception to that su25t video in edge. And you can plainly see fps drops in that so combat fps needs more work in edge from what we have seen. Honestly it's going to be like arma 3 until a full engine rewrite and all cores of processor is used. The current engine appears to be very much CPU-bound, and it has been implied that there is a lot of graphics overhead keeping the CPU busy. There are a lot of people that have insisted more things need to be put into different threads to better utilize multi-core CPUs, and ED's response regarding 2.0 was that they looked at it, and it wouldn't make much difference. To me this implies that the overhead has decreased so much with EDGE that it is no longer CPU-bound. This would make sense given the DirectX changes that are supposed to take a lot of the CPU overhead out of the 3D rendering. If the CPU can now keep the 3D pipeline filled without having to run full tilt, it should be freed to keep up with the more mundane tasks (systems simulations, physics, and game objects). If ED says they don't need to use all the cores on a CPU to get good performance on the new engine, I believe it. This is the way 3D graphics engines have been since the beginning of 3D graphics. Graphics cards eventually outpace the ability of the application to feed them, and the APIs and engines can/need to be rewritten to put more of the load back on the GPU. This is especially true given that GPU performance has been growing MUCH faster than CPU performance over the past few years. Increasing the resolution to 4k is going to put a lot more additional load on the Graphics card than it will on the CPU, as that's where most of the additional work needs to be done. Most of us are probably already running 4k via MSAA anyway. The bottom line is that I think we should stop making assumptions about the performance of the new engine based on the current engine and how much or little we think is changing with regards to multi-threading. It is probably irrelevant anyway.
AtaliaA1 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I think DCS only uses one GPU for a single monitor. Also I'm running on single GPU because there's a bug with the mirrors in SLI. SharpeXB Posted May 8, 2015 Author Posted May 8, 2015 (edited) Have you also ticked the "Use Single Monitor Performance" in the control panel? Yes I had been running a single GPU because on a 1080p screen one 980 was enough. I also wasn't aware SLI functioned correctly in DCS although I saw both being used. I'm using a single Titan X now. But I've come to the realization that (for other games) 4K resolution + Ultra Graphics + 60fps = TWO Titan Xs. So another is on the way... A single Titan X runs DCS at 4K very well though. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=142942 Edited May 8, 2015 by SharpeXB i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
