(Don't know if there is a thread out there for this already) but just like the title, are there any simmers that will buy the F-14 primarily for the RIO position? And if so, then why? (what makes you want to fly in the back more than the front)

Just want to see some of the people who I may fly with one day :)

One day in DCS... Vipers will fly along side Tomcats... Bugs with Superbugs, Tiffy's with Tornado's, Fulcrums with Flankers and Mirage with Rafales...

me : )

because i can concentrate me on the avionic systems and the teamwork. Further i can use the external weapon view with out the danger to crash against the next mountain ; )

Almost none of my friends want to play DCS because they don't have joysticks. :(

But with the RIO spot, in theory, they wont need a joystick! My sales pitch to them is that DCS if free and if they just get the F-14, we can fly together even if they don't have a joystick. :joystick:

But I probably still want them to get TrackIR. :music_whistling:

Any Virtual RIO's out there?

For me, I'll learn how to be a good RIO, and fly in the back if there is a pilot in need of a RIO. But I'm primarily going to fly. :)

Maybe I could do the RIO job, but only if the pilot is way better than me! If not, forget it! And it could be a good way to learn how to Master the beast. Thinking about it, I should begin to pratice carrier landing (F-18, F-14 are coming) :helpsmilie:....!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a common sentiment. ;)

I plan to learn the RIO role as best I can since it's hard to fully appreciate the Tomcat's capability without doing so.

I'm a "stick & rudder" (and throttle!) kind of player, the basic task of flying is my favorite part of flight sims. But leanring how to properly operate the Tomcat's Radar and weapons system could be quite an art and really involving if modeled well.

Acting as RIO in a mutliplayer situations sounds really cool and a nice departure from the usual - a truly novel feature of LNS' upcoming module. If the community does a good job of making the RIO a true "team" role (like the USN), where the RIO handles nav, RADAR, and all weapons delivery in BVR while the pilot handles basic flight and WVR weapons - then there is real appeal to flying the RIO position in MP. It also is an unusual team situation for a simulation in having interconnected players and not just wingmen.

It will be really cool if the interface works and the community comes into it with the right attitude.

I also plan to give Jester a work-out in SP... I still expect the pilot role to be my favorite.

I think I will be doing a fair bit of RIO when the F-14 comes out. It feels like the position is underrated quite a bit.

Online the F-14's with a human RIO are probably going to be a lot stronger then people flying with the ai version.

A well communicating RIO gives a lot of situational awareness and tactical advice you will never get from an ai (atleast not the next 10 years).

I could very easily see my self being a RIO personal in the back of some ones F-14, there would still be plenty of switches and buttons for me to mess with to operate the radar and other electronic equipment. Also if the pilot needs a bathroom brake I could fly around a bit tell he gets back to take over his job. I am just wondering how the flight controls will work for multi crew aircraft and how it will be set up to hand over controls from pilot/copilot or RIO officer.

Well, in FSX, you would press a button to ask to recieve/hand over controls, and the other player would have to press a button within a time limit to accept or refuse. I think that system worked really well.

I'd love to get good at RI but it's looking as if I'll mostly be the pilot, looking at this thread.

I bet having someone in the back seat telling me how stupid blind I am will help a ton, like having AWACS built-in

I have couple friends who are interested in milsims, but haven't invested in quality hotas or rudders. I was thinking of recruiting them as my RIOs.

I intend to sell it to them by telling that "Its just like being a tank commander in a tank while I'm the driver gunner" - I think that will work better than just saying that you are my R2D2 in the back.

I plan to learn and practice as both. Having an F-14 at your disposal (especially if a high-fidelity one) and not getting yourself at least familiar with all of the simulated systems seams like a waste of a perfectly good aircraft. However, i am primarily a "stick man" and i intend to do the flying most of the time....

Same as how I feel about it. With the DCS level sims I love to learn all the systems and features. The F-14 is my favourite military aircraft and it's coming as a high fidelity sim I can't wait to fly it and RIO in it.

Actually I plan on playing as RIO first and foremost, it's the main draw of the F-14 for me.

I'm a big fan of teammwork, communication, and systems management, so the RIO role seems tailor made for me. I'm also not that familiar with modern jets yet (I mostly fly the WW2 planes), and taking a supportive role in the backseat for an experienced player seems like a great way to learn.

If anybody knows of any good documentation on RIO procedures & technique, let me know, as I'm keen to start studying in advance of the release.

It would probably be a good idea to pair green drivers with veteran RIOs (and the other way around) when this thing hits the shelves (as they did it back in the day). I can see DCS supplying a good deal of pilots for this to work, but are there enough if any WSO's out there?

I know a couple people that'll let me be bad at being a RIO, but I'm a fairly quick learner, it would be nice to have people that already know what their doing to help us newbies out.

I hope there's a way to be a RIO in single player to practice...

My frontseaters always said they'd rather have 200 lbs of gas! A dozen eggs and an altitude chamber ride every five years usually changed their minds ... :D

I don't need no stinkin' GPS! (except for PGMs :D) :pilotfly:
