So... whats so great about the F-5E?

Its a small lightweight 1970s fighter.

Its very maneuverable and should be fun to fly and fight in.

And while they went for a less high tech approach with the F-5 then with most other US aircraft of the time it still has some nice systems like the RWR to give you an edge against your prime opponents (which will be Mig-21s in this case)

The Air-Air Loadout is on the small side with only 2 air-air missiles but used correctly and especially together with the cannon you should be able to get atleast 2 kills per sortie maby more if you are good at the guns dogfighting.

And while it does not have any advanced Air-Ground ordnance it can carry a decent air-ground load for its size.

So it should be fun and interesting in the air-ground role aswell.

And due to the way the Pylons work you can still carry your 2 Aim-9s even when you carry as many bombs/rockets as you can so you will still be able to defend yourself (if you ditch ur air-ground ordnance)

And the F-5E is also a very iconic fighter that has served with a huge amount of nations across the world.

there is no Part of the world that has not seen nations fly the F-5.

Whether it be North America, South America, Africa,Asia (including many middle eastern nations) or even Oceania (since Indonesia operates the F-5 but i dont know if they have ever stationed F-5s at New Guniea)

But to a large part if you will enjoy the F-5E comes down to you.

If you Like and are interested by the older airplanes like the Mig-21 or F-86/Mig-15 then im confident you will like the F-5E.

But if you want a hightech aircraft and only intend to fight the modern fights (F-15,Su-27,Mig-29,Mirage-2000 etc)

then you might find the F-5E to your liking.

But for me who is someone who has always loved the F-5E and its design philosophy and who also prefer the combat of the older airplanes and who think its more fun to fly and fight in the pre 90s/80s aircraft the F-5E is a Given Purchase.

It's a cool little plane :)

From my perspective, it was not only a main fighter in the Royal Canadian Air Force (until retired), but a variant of it was manufactured in Canada and exported.

It's an example of a design philosophy that isn't popular in US designed planes - small, cheap, nimble, lots of them - but you see a lot in Russian designed aircraft (look at the Su-25). The US tends towards "fewer, bigger, faster, more expensive, cutting edge technology in all things" (although given US military budgets "fewer" might not mean numerically inferior).

The F-5 was originally a design proposal for a project that eventually went to the F-16 - but Northrop realized that it made an inexpensive export plane, so it saw a lot of use in US allied air forces, even though it never saw non-trainer use in the U.S.

---

If only you're interested in the "biggest, fastest, most deadly kid on the block", then maybe the F-5 won't "click" with you, but if you're an aviation buff, are interested in historical match ups, or a fan of the Russian aircraft in DCS, then you might really enjoy it.

Video says F-5 TIGER II but isn't that an F-5C?

Yea the US operated F-5s would the the F-5C (Modified variant of the F-5A)

Though the F-5E did see use with the South Vietnamese airforce during the last 2-3 years (they had a large number of F-5As and a small number of F-5Es)

Would have been correct to call it F-5 Skoshi Tiger or Tiger 1 though.

AS the F-5C (during its operations in Vietnam) got the nickname Skochi Tiger.

The Name Skochi Tiger is a corruption of Sukoshi Tiger (Japanese for Little Tiger)

And the F-5E was named to honor the F-5C and its operations in vietnam so they gave it the name Tiger II.

You are right; I stand corrected.

It would be more accurate to say it never saw wide spread non-trainers use in the U.S.

12 F-5A (later re-classed F-5C) were fielded in the Vietnam conflict as "battle testing" of the aircraft. They flew over 2.5K+ sorties, losing 7 of the 12 to enemy fire.

This is why you see them dropping Napalm in "Apocalypse Now".

In '66 the field active fleet expanded to 17 - but eventually the active F-5 fleet was supplied to South Vietnam, and so-far-as-I-know that was the end of U.S. use of the F-5 outside of training, OPFOR aircraft at Nellis, and movie appearances as the MiG-28 "Fantasy".

exactly the F5C only served in vietnam from 1965-1966 for evaluations.

the F5's were only used in apocypse now because they were filimg in the phillipines, and it was basically a fill in for the usaf TAC aircraft, since they couldnt of gotten a hold of F100's or F4's

they had Philippine AF F5's repainted to look like USAF for the filming of that scene. If thye had intended to have been the Skoshi tigers they gave em the wrong paintscheme ( should have used the Southeast asia camo pattern), and had made the film take place early in americans combat involvement.

It never mentions the exact year the movie takes place but based on dialogue, equipment they use, and the battles, it\m confident to surmise Apocalypse now likely takes place in 1968 if not afterwards.

Then agian the film was not a historically accurate, it was not based on any actual events, but a retelling of the Heart of Darkness in a more modern setting.

F5 may be just around the corner. It seems Belsimtek's goal is to have an early access release of the F5E by next month.

I believed that this version would be like the swiss air force used. Too bad.
