Dave317 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 I'm thinking of updating my gtx 770 for something a bit more powerful. I'm also thinking about oculus rift possibly around Christmas time. Since the new gtx 1080 is out there are quite a few gtx980's on the market. I can't afford a brand new 1080 so is it worth getting a used gtx980 or are they obsolete now since the 1080?
firmek Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 I would consider 1070 instead of 980. Also Pascal was just released, within 1-2 months there should have more options to choose from. 1 F/A-18, F-16, F-14, M-2000C, A-10C, AV-8B, AJS-37 Viggen, F-5E-3, F-86F, MiG-21bis, MiG-15bis, L-39 Albatros, C-101 Aviojet, P-51D, Spitfire LF Mk. IX, Bf 109 4-K, UH-1H, Mi-8, Ka-50, NTTR, Normandy, Persian Gulf... and not enough time to fully enjoy it all
adrianstealth Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 hold out until you get your rift go for 2nd hand 980ti minimum, maybe 1070 / 1080 's wll be knocking around in your price range by then too also keep an eye on the new VR cards from AMD -they will be in your price range the gpu market is changing quicky right now, hold out for a while until your about to go for a rift 1

joey45 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Indeed, save up and buy them at the same time. No point getting the card now when 6 months or so there's a better one... 1 The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Konovalov Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 Indeed, save up and buy them at the same time. No point getting the card now when 6 months or so there's a better one... Agreed. Same principle applies to the drip drip approach to purchase of components for a new build. Save up and just get everything together. So wait till you get your VR headset and then look at the state of the GPU market at that time. Hopefully prices on the new Nvidia 1080 and 1070 cards fall and AMD will hopefully have it's Polaris cards out on the market also. NeilWillis Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 I guess really, the bottom line with computer power is budget. Will a 980 run a rift with decent frame rates and provide an acceptable performance overall? Well, until very recently, it was all there was, so the answer must be yes. Is it ideal however? No. Rift is a very resource hungry device, and will demand even more than the the 10 series of GPUs can offer right now. But of course, if you don't have the available money to max out your system, then buying a 980 ti card will be a much more economical solution, and it will work with Rift. I'd suggest that you may even be better off waiting another 6 months to a year, when a 2nd generation Rift, more optimised software for both the GPU, and DCS World may become available. It is all a question of budget.
Krupi Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 (edited) I doubt we will see a CV2 or Vive 2 until 2018. I should be getting my CV1 soon and have just upgraded to a i5 6600K from a i7 930 however I won't upgrade my 780 just yet I will wait for the 1070 price to drop. I have gotten over buying flagship GPU's it seems there is not a lot of performance difference between the 1070/1080. adrianstealth Posted June 20, 2016 Posted June 20, 2016 With conservative graphic settings and low-ish pixel setting A 980 will run a CV1 nicely ( providing your cpu is good eg around 4ghz ) I run a gtx Titan black water cooled & overclocked & get a decent VR experurnce I tried my friends cv1 with a 980ti and it was a different experience all together -super fluid Go 980ti minimum for VR , hold out for higher if you can
spikenet Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 intersting discussion, I've been wanting to pull the trigger on a 1070, possibly a 1080 AIB but limit stock and silly prices have me holding out.. I'm still using my trusty gtx680 but it is starting to show its age and I feel upgrade is warranted. I to want to get a rift when they are available which seems to be latter in the year so most likely going to spend the extra $$ for 1080 which in the long run should last me 3-4 years. 3
Hadwell Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 So far from what's been leaked, the RX 480, falls somewhere around the 980 in performance and costs a lot less... 1 My youtube channel Remember: the fun is in the fight, not the kill, so say NO! to the AIM-120. BitMaster Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 It depends what you pay for a used 980GTX. Most times the CPU is slower than the GPU anyways and in 1.5 I cant max out my 980GTX even at 5.250GHz ( tried that till it collapsed :) ). SkateZilla Posted June 24, 2016 Posted June 24, 2016 (edited) GTX 980s are Overpriced now, Wait for them to Drop some more, In Less than a Week the RX-480 will be out for 199/4GB 229/8GB and will likely have more performance than the GTX 980, while consuming significantly less power and put out less heat. if you dont wanna buy and AMD Product, e-Tailers, and nVidia would be smart at that point to drop the GTX980 Prices significantly to sub$200 to remain any type of competitive in the Mainstream Market.
