I'll use it like I do with MiG-21, both air to ground and air to air.

 

And I hope many, many more of this kind of aircraft will be added.

Wishlist: F-4E Block 53 +, MiG-27K, Su-17M3 or M4, AH-1F or W circa 80s or early 90s, J35 Draken, Kfir C7, Mirage III/V

The Air-Air and Air-Ground Role is clearly for the F-5. I will be on Mig-21 vs. F-5 Servers but it'll also fit well in the Top Gun Match Servers.

Can always be used to recreate the border wars between SA and MPLA/Cubans. Of course the SA's had Mirage F1 .. similar in size and capability to the F5 and the Cubans flew MiG21.

Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!

As for being useless, not sure how one of the most widely used fighters of dcs's core time period (1980's) can be considered useless.

 

There's a very vocal group here on the forums that won't accept anything other than a "modern multirole fighter" as useful or fun. Sorry, but if you can't engage 16 targets at once, from BVR range, 90 degrees off boresight, with active fire and forget missiles, in supercruise, on autopilot... what's the point of even taking off? ;)

I will deliver some mk82/84 at low level to bring down the enemy infrastructure - bridges, crossroads, refineries, facilities

 

Down under the SA-3 threat that is everywhere, dodging tracers of any caliber.

And the F-5 will have a very decent bomb load.

 

I Think the ultimate might be 5x MK-82 on the centerline.

Mk-83s on the inner wing pylon (one on each wing)

 

and M117s on the outer wing pylons (as its heaviest bomb you can carry on those pylons)

or alternatively Rocket pods instead of the M117.

 

That together with 2x Aim-9s should be a pretty formidable bombload.

 

Sadly unguided HE bombs are not as useful in DCS atm as they should be but anyway the F-5E will carry a quite formidable payload.

 

Only Trick will be learning to be Accurate with Bombs and Rockets.

It'll be (subject to test & eval) the 476th's formal Aggressor jet operated by the 65th vAGRS, and possibly we'll also use it as a basic trainer again depending on test & eval results and practicality.

That's right, but we love our Warheads Mod!

And there will be a bomb truck mod for sure ;)

A three ship flight full of bombs will do quite good damage on a building or bridge. Or working with a Fac - full load on the WP in the forest.... Can't wait

The F5E didn't have IFF capability though did it?!

 

I know it can transmit IFF (so F15s know it is friend or foe) but can't interrogate a radar signal for IFF.

A bit of everything. I like these simple straight forward aircraft. I find no satisfaction flying a super-computer with wings. And if I can down an F15 then thats cool.

as noted by N1tch the F-5E is unable to IFF targets it all has to be done Visually.

 

And that was not really a problem in reality as there was no real need to IFF a target when you need to be within visual range anyway.

 

But in DCS that will make some more arcadish servers less F-5E friendly since on the 104th for example with both sides flying the same aircraft it will be very hard to Visually ID.

No IFF could be mean prepare for getting alot of cussing for friendly fire :D

Well, the lack of IFF forces you to get clpse to your enemy and visual ID him or being on TS with Callout "Raygun".

Life can be that easy :D

The IFF is rather limited in DCS in General. IFF works like checking if the Bogey is on Blue or Red Team. The Transponder in the Tiger AFAIK is not operable

I've set up a Makro on my Keyboard for calling out Raygun and Buddy Spike in the Chat. That way I only have to take off one Hand off my HOTAS
