Hi today I started the upgrade process to Windows 10. Im performing a clean install and want to get the best possible OS performance without too much background crap running that I'll never use.

Anyone been through the process have any advice?

I disabled my modules before I started. After the upgrade from w7 I created a boot disc and have now selected a custom install. I've disabled cortana and all the windows reporting features.

Well, you are doing everything right, so far. A clean install is probably the single most important thing. After that it is mostly a matter of removing some of the stuff that you don't intend on using.

People's experience with windows 10 is pretty broad. Aside from windows corrupting after installing via an upgrade (causing me to have to clean install) I haven't had any further issues. So, yea, clean installing is the way to go.

Thanks all who replied. I installed from scratch and created a clean system. Managed to get around all the Microsoft spying settings thanks to a link to a video provided in another thread. Linking here for reference. All good so far.

Deactivate Xbox-App DVR-Recording !

YOu might want to Google it and also disable it in registry so it wont re-enable itself ;)

Went back from 25-35fps to 65-100 fps by just finding that damn switch that enabled itself with Anniversary Update.

You can't turn off automatic updates or windows defender. 2 very good reason to NOT go W10

Well I've just tested and Windows 10 with ASW for the rift in DCS is reason enough to put up with the auto updates. I'm glad I made the switch. Everything is much smoother now.

May have spoken too soon. Just had my first PC crash. I had just reset my previous overclock in bios (I had it back to default for the update) and was flying over Nevada when I got a kernel power error.

Well there isn't a "dumb" button to stop it but it can be stopped the same way we've been doing it since vista.

I'll run windows 10 when I have no other option.

I'll just dual boot if I really want DX 12.

You can stop the automatic Windows Updates if you place your PC on "metered" WiFi. A quick Google search will provide the steps. I applied that approach due to the constant attempt by Microsoft to update me to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, which I have installed several times and had nothing but problems. So I rolled it back to the previous OS install and the "metered" approach stops that update from automatically installing.

You can only hold Updates and Upgrades in Win10 back for so long until the accepted EULA catches you.

Win10/MS can and will force updates on your PC before or specific date for each KB-Article.

If you for some reason dont have those packages installed by then your Win10 will refuse to work.

This has been debated long and wide on various threads...the change of EULA to a point where MS controls your SW and not YOU !!!

Heck. glad I usually run Mac and Linux for my daily work, this MS BS sux big time in that field.

Oh man, Win10 got me good last night with an update.

My cockpit uses 5 HID controllers for all the switches and axis required. Win 10 saw fit to change the ID numbers of these 5 controllers. This means DCS and Helios see them in a different order. Hundreds of switches and all axis are now inoperative. This took weeks to get running and it is gone. Restore didn't fix it.

Wow! Went to bed with a great running cockpit and it is now gone.

yeah, I'm not liking Win10.

What bs Microsoft forcing people to upgrade to get DX12..I am sticking with win7/personal preference I guess. If I had to, ill setup a dual boot.

This is really BS from Microsoft. If Microsoft continues with this crapola for an extended period of time, gamers will start turning to Linux.

I wish ED start developing an Linux version of this game.

Oh please god no. The only way I enjoy DCS is in the rift. The other sim I want to use has no VR support precisely because it is cross platform (x-plane). My reason for making the move to Windows 10 was for VR improvements. I'm glad I did it and am now over the initial problems and have a much better looking sim with higher settings and smooth VR performance.

Unfortunately, until the Linux gaming market gets much larger, few devs will spend the extra effort.

I installed my first Linux version about 22 years ago. I don't see a change happening anytime soon.

Not anytime soon but no empire lasted forever and even MS will eventually make place.

We can only hope it will not be of a lesser kind whatever comes afterwards, but something will come :)

the kicker is, starting as of 2017 new hardware, namely CPU's, will only work on windows 10.

Not quite right !

If you need Windows then you may only pick 10 and no 8 or 7 anymore.

But that is something totally different to what you expressed.

Mac for example relies on Intel CPU

and many many state lawyers and monopoly control would severely intervene if that was true, absolutely no doubt they would pull both in front of EU court, as done before.

I agree. What form it will take is anyone's guess. I cut my teeth on DEC Vax and various versions of Unix, before Windows existed. Now days there are more devices running an Android OS than I would have ever imagined.

I still wish it was as easy to tweak my desktop environment in Windows as it was in Xwindows/*nix.
