Hey guys,

We're getting close to an early Christmas (thanks razbam)!

So I was just wondering what control on your Warthogs, Rhinos, Cougars, X52s and other snazzy control systems will you be mapping to nozzle angle. I only own a joystick in name (being delivered) but thought this could prove useful for others in future starting the long enthralling control mapping slug.

Ive got a Warthog throttle and stick so was going to map the little grey slider on the throttle, I think its friction control, not sure how this will work with the nozzle stop though.

I see Jabbers in his latest video is using the left throttle for nozzle control which would work great if you can use the Hp cock gate as the nozzle stop, lifting it to put the nozzles into the rev position it would work as in real life except the lever would be on the wrong side of the throttle.

As the TGP pod is controlled by the buttons on the MFD display I'm hoping to map these controls to be similar to the A10-C hotas controls to make life a bit easier.

TM Warthog: It's hard to give a good answer without having flown the plane yet, but to begin with, I'll use the left throttle axis for the nozzles and possibly the slider axis for the short takeoff stop. My reasoning behind going for the left throttle (instead of the slider) is that it is easily accessible while using the throttle. Using the right throttle axis for the actual throttle makes sense due to all the various HOTAS functions mapped to the buttons on the right throttle lever.

CH Pro Throttle. I think I am stuck using digital key binding as opposed to analog unless I consider purchasing a throttle quadrant or a different throttle.

WH and going to use the slider for nozzles.

I'd recommend using something else for zoom for just such a reason as you're running into here. Almost every plane can benefit from using that slider for something else and having to take your hands off the throttle just to zoom is a hindrance. Personally I have zoom mapped to my stick by means of using the paddle as a modifier so I never have to release control in the heat of battle. My 2 cents...

Posted this earlier but I am finished with the lever and the interface. Top detail part with graduation marks is currently being 3d printed to look closer to the actual harrier part....

Sorry it's blurry, taken from video...

I believe (to be determined) I'm going to use the left throttle of my TM setup. I currently use the slider for radar antenna position in the F5 and I find it a little awkward to get to.

Given the left throttle only has two buttons on it, using it for the nozzle control will leave all the remaining buttons at your control of the throttle which will obviously be used more than the nozzle direction.

I'm sure individual preference and time will be a huge factor for us all.

Im using a Warthog Throttle and Stick.

In the P-51 im using the left Throttle for the Power Setting so i think i will use left Throttle for Nozzle Control in the Harrier since i want to save the Friction Control for zooming.

But this may change when i get my hands on this Baby and find out about all the other things which might need some Axis. Radar Elevation maybe. simply dont know until im familiar with the Harrier Avionics.

gnah....i want this plane NOW..... :pilotfly:

Do you use Target Software for shifting?

currently trying to avoid Target as long as i can do it without.

I have a X-65F and have a rotary dial by my left thumb on the Throttle.

I think I'll set that to the nozzle control. It will be really easy to control that way.

I saw jabbers using the left throttle too just looked mega awkward.

I use the friction slider for zoom on every single plane, would have been a mess in my mind to change this for a single plane. Honestly, its not awkward, having never done it before, it was fine to learn on the left.

In documents it is said that pilots started to mainly use STOL and VTOL was left for carrier landings. And the pilots then used method in take-off to push both levelers simultaneously. So you accelerated and then went to vertical and then returned the nozzles back to zero.

So it should be easy to do with split throttles.

Yup I do nearly this for STOL

Nozzle control choice

For those of you picking the gray slider on the warthog, what are you going to use for zoom?

Throttle mic switch forward, I only fly in VR. I've actually never had anything, ever, bound to the grey slider...so it's an easy win for me.

For zoom I would hate having to take my hand off the stick or throttle to zoom in...especially in BFM.

I see, i do both TIR and VR, TIR more-so lately. I use my mic switch press for zoom in VR and foward up aft for radios, and down for recenter VR/Tir

Lower rotary on the throttle of X-55. I used to have this mapped to zoom, but I'm using VR now so that function no longer applies. Agreed on Jabber's setup seeming super awkward. I assume the TMWH has some pinky buttons/switches like the X-55, seems hard to access those with the throttles split like that.

Ya but generally its lights and auto pilot for A-10 on that throttle. For the harrier i use it for lights and cage/uncage, both functions i wont use often and never in the middle of combat, so no big deal.

I use the pinky throttle switch for zoom. The default mapping for lights, while very common on most western a/c, I find it's fine just to use the keyboard for because it is relatively rare. Whereas I typically would like to keep HOTAS when zooming, while for lights on/off it is less critical.

On helo's, I use the gray slider for throttle.

I don't believe I have it mapped to anything else on most a/c I fly. But then, I typically fly helos most of the time anyway now, and most of the remaining time it's WW2 ...

No I could never get Target to work properly back in the day...that ship has sailed for me...I hate that software.

In the controls section on the bottom there's a "modifiers" tab. If you go in there you can assign a modifier key to whatever you want. So for example my modifier key is the paddle on the stick. That means that if I hold down the paddle and press a button it does something different than if I had pressed just the button by itself.

I've got:

zoom in slow = paddle + dms up

zoom out slow = paddle + dms dn

zoom reset = paddle + dms right

I have this setup for every single airframe. Works great for me and frees up the slider access for more important things.
