farmertom Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Hi, Somewhat new here. I have just been playing around with DCS for a while. Just upgraded my computer to run DCS 2.5. Good cpu and graphics card.. So if you had $500.00 would you buy a large single monitor or triple monitor setup with TrackIR or a VR headset? :( What are the pros and cons as you see them. Thanks
dburne Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 VR all the way. dburne Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 I knew I would get a lot of "choose VR" responses! So What VR head sets do you recommend? I personally am still a big fan of my Oculus Rift. However I would also mention I take full advantage of it to include the good tracking for playing other games that require a moderate room scale setup. The Touch Controllers for it are currently second to none, Oculus did a fantastic job with them. But again, I use them mostly for some other Oculus games. However DCS does have built in support for them, but kind of awkward to use currently in a flight sim. Can be fun for flipping switches in a start up procedure. There are some slightly better resolution devices now, not what I would call true 2nd generation product. The HTC Vive Pro has better screen resolution, but is weak in some other areas like sound. Some are even replacing the lenses with Gear VR lenses to improve it - kind of says a lot to me. Plus it is quite pricey. Samsung Odyssey is a WMR ( Windows Mixed Reality) device, has little better resolution than Rift or first gen Vive. But it also has some limitations, if only for seated cockpit games I am sure it would be fine. Probably not for a full VR experience that has everything. IMHO the Rift is currently the best "bang for the buck". After that I think the Odyssey makes sense for just cockpit games. There is of course the Vive, I personally think the Vive Pro is way to pricey for what one gets with it. dburne Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Well OK, I spent most of my $500.00. I bought an Oculus Rift.:P  Congrats, I look forward to hearing your thoughts! When you get it, don't try to shortcut setup. Be sure and get both sensors set up properly and go through the Touch Tutorial. It is very cool. Looking forward to the Rift. Any "Got yas" on the setup? thanks
wormeaten Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 You should buy 4K TV, sweet spot 43". Kidding but not completely. Todays 4K TV is good with low input lag so could be used as a 4K monitor at 60Hz and price is twice lower than 43" 4K monitor based on same display with only real benefit DP connection. VR vs 4K 43" or 49" is depending on your preferences. VR you have better immersion and real 3D experience but lower picture quality what bring some other issues in gameplaying like less visibility and recognition problems. 43" 4K display TV or Monitor is completely opposite. Quality of the picture is much better, better visibility and recognition, more details, multiple usages for gaming and working. Larg screen has better immersion but not that good as VR. Its steel looking true window only larger one so FOV is less than VR but not much but it is a window not binocular. 43" 4K is like 4x 1080p 22" monitors. So answer to your question depend only on your personal preferences and compromises. whatever you chose you to have to compromise only in the different way. Good luck.
Einherjer Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 VR is like flying Monitor is like watching a Movie about flying ;) Ok it’s a good movie, but I prefer the VR experience
falcon_120 Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 VR is like flying the real thing, is superb. But now that i have the oculus i also have to tell you that in a perfect timing what you should be buying is the new VR generation with improved resolution in a 1/1.5 years from now... I'm now dreaming on when we will have this... Yet Current VR is still impressive...a low level attack mission through the valleys is breathtaking
tintifaxl Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I bought a LG 43" IPS monitor - should arrive tomorrow. Occasionally I put on my PSVR and check things out in DCS, but for me VR is just not there yet. Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.
fitness88 Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 I will add; in order for you to get the most out of your Rift you need to be very patient and systematic with the settings you choose in DCS. This can make all the difference between a thoroughly enjoyable/smooth VR experience or quite the opposite.
remi Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Let me just say one thing: There's a reason why Matt Wagner puts his videos out on the Hornet using a monitor + TrackIR: he can actually see details in the cockpit. If you have any hope of actually using an aircraft to its full capability, you simply can not use VR. You NEED to be able to read cockpit instruments. I don't understand why people here would suggest VR should be purchased before monitor + TrackIR. VR should only be used as a novelty in addition to a monitor, not exclusively. MAYBE if VR screen resolution was 5x better than current tech and there was no problem with performance or screen door effect, then MAYBE you could go solely with VR, but we're nowhere close to that. No problem on my end for well over a year now playing exclusively in VR. No first gen is not perfect but nothing is. When it comes to VR it is all very much a personal and subjective thing, one size certainly does not fit all. Some love it, some are meh, some hate it. For me, I have not done any gaming on a monitor since Jan 15th 2017. And I can't seem to get enough of it, using it pretty much daily. No problem here, can read anything and the really important informations are on the hud . Remember, you can move freely in the cockpit, when you can’t read the instruments by leaning slightly forwards than it’s not the problem of the rift ;) And than ... are we here for flying or for using a virtual computer on a computer?! And details in the cockpit? I have never noticed the screws on the rail or the mapcase before VR Situation awareness? Where am I in the room ? Find a ground target again after a turn ? AA refueling? Hovering a chopper? Yup, that’s easier with VR ... really easier! And maybe this is as important as knowing your fuel stat from your instruments No offense, just don’t see the „problem“ (compared to my instruments)
toutenglisse Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Wags probably records his hornet videos using a monitor because the rendering is perfect for everyone who's watching. Wich is not the case for VR's Mirror. Wags also said that the rendering of hornet in VR is very good. But we don't know maybe he prefers using DCS with a monitor. In VR you have a zoom button to quickly see a tiny gauge's symbology. And with VR's reprojection you can increase the sharpness and keeping 90 synthetics fps. I actually use 1.5PD with no AA (external FXAA that I suspect doesn't really work...) and it makes already everything readable without zoom in A10c (except the tiny MFD's on screen symbols for button's function) for exemple. But on top of that VR gives the ... meh .... immersion !
dburne Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 When I first got VR one of the first things I did was take the Spit out for a spin. First time I was coming in for landing and saw those power lines hanging down in front of me as I approached low I was like ohh s*&t. And then I was hooked. Big time. I so can't wait to see the Hornet in all it's glory! NineGzuz Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 (edited) At this time. I would not recommend either new monitor or VR. We aren't going to be waiting long for VR Gen 2 headsets, and if they really are the high resolution we are being teased (5k or more) then it would a poor choice to buy a current Gen vr unit. Unless you can get a good deal on one e.g. Windows mixed reality headsets sometimes sell for $200 new. For the $500 for an oculus or $800 for vive this late in the game its not worth the money Edited May 18, 2018 by NineGzuz
Thick8 Posted May 18, 2018 Posted May 18, 2018 If you’re going to do DCS in VR you have to get the Odyssey or Vive pro. The extra pixels make all the difference in the world. A Hamburgler Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I have the Samsung Odyssey and its amazing. I actually was playing without VR the last couple days because I was mission editing. When I was done I played test my mission in VR and almost forgot how cray it is. Actually looking up at big objects makes it feel so real and the cockpit seems so real too I just want to reach out and flip the switches. Nothing beats VR
