Yurgon Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 So many amazing things happening in astronomy and space travel these days. And yeah, this one is particularly cool! Nonetheless, hats off to the Chinese for landing on the far side of the moon, yet another brilliant accomplishment!
Emmy Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 When you stop and consider that they had to work out the geometry for this intercept THREE YEARS IN ADVANCE, the cool factor goes up just a lil bit... Scotch75 Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Yeah, it really puts into perspective how fortunate we are on our little blue planet and how immense the known universe is. The mathematics involved to plot an intercept on a celestial scale over such a long distance just boggles my mind. Well done NASA and all involved. Cheers! Yurgon Posted January 5, 2019 Posted January 5, 2019 Now I have try that in KSP. :) Yeah, KSP really helps put things into perspective, and give an appreciation of just how incredibly difficult this rocket science and space travel stuff actually is. It's still mind blowing to imagine how vast the distances are, and how small the objects. I guess in this video, Ultima Thule would been represented by, what, a grain of sand? Nah, waaay too big. And how far out from the center? 10 miles? Yeah, visiting that microscopic dot out in the middle of nowhere, that is an accomplishment!
cichlidfan Posted January 5, 2019 Author Posted January 5, 2019 Yeah, KSP really helps put things into perspective, and give an appreciation of just how incredibly difficult this rocket science and space travel stuff actually is. Worrazen Posted January 6, 2019 Posted January 6, 2019 I watched all the press confs and read a bunch. Good thing is they didn't lose much fuel on this flyby so there's pretty good chance another one is certain if the surveys are done good, but a third one maybe depending how second one goes.
