Hey guys,

I have a hard time with HARMs (SP mode in current Open Beta).

I found that most of them are falling long (behind the target). Yes, sometimes the explosion disable the SAM but the vehicle is not destroyed.

I've tried many tactics/approaches. For example fighting against SA-8:

- shot from 20 NM or from 7 NM

- altitude around 2000 agl or 15000 agl

- speed between 300 and 700 kts

- missle release when I'm only searched, tracked, locked by radar or when SAM shot back at me.

From my expirence the hit ratio is less then 50%. I'm aware that some missles can miss but AV-8B's sidearms are far more better (around 90% hit ratio).

What I do wrong? Any ideas?

(I don't want to spam the forum but I can provide screenshots from the missed hits.)

The accuracy might be realistic, HARM isn't a magic bullet with perfect accuracy IRL, what would be great is if we got the proximity fuze that it should have, this would alleviate some of the pain of the missile sailing over the tops of RADARs.

What I have found is if you can get the missile to come down at a steeper angle it will help up the PK. For instance, against SA-6 I like to fire from 35k' and about 15nm from the launch site, this keeps me out of the SA-6 WEZ and maximizes the dive angle of the missile, meaning if it goes long, due to the angle it wont sail as far away from the radar before hitting the ground. This increases the chance that it will detonate close to the unit and do critical damage to the radar and take it out of action.

same here. the higher the decent angle, it seems the higher the chance.

And if you can try to stay at a distance where the SAM keeps tracking you. If the SAM are not tracking you the missile cant remember the SAM position and goes long most of the time.

This is because the SP mode has not a precise location of the SAM.

All classic variants of HARM will inherently suffer from the lack of precise range information. Should the emissions from the target be lost, even a small angular error can mean significant distance over the ground should the missile approach from shallow. Launched close and above the target, the shot's geometry will certainly improve the situation if the target radar emits high enough for good terminal guidance.

PB/EOM is going to noticeably improve the situation i expect. the current self-defense RUK analog is a no-range activate-off-the-rail shot IIRC, which won't loft very well and has no ranging information associated with it.

once you can fire S/O EOM with a more top-down profile and a narrower seeker cone you will get much more accuracy, at the cost of only being able to shoot at things whose precise position is known.

Yeah, I might be shelving the SEAD stuff until PB/EOM (or whatever their USN counterparts are) are developed. SP mode seems to be okay against SA-2s with the P-19/Fan Song combo, but against SA-3s I find the missile will totally miss the radars and destroy whatever supply truck is nearby, even when firing from high altitude/high angles, and tracking radar emitters.

Just wait until we get the AGM-45.. It usually lands in the next town over.

AGM 45 Shrike is much more older (Vietnam war era and even earlier) weapon. And it is very inacurrate. Just use HARM.
