I've been reading some posts recently about deleting the FXO and metashaders after updating.

I've just (re)-installed the shader VR mod after updating but am wondering if I should also delete the above folders as either for good measure or good practise.

Thoughts?

I delete the fxo and metashaders folders (both in "Program Files\Eagle Dynamics\DCS World OpenBeta\Bazar\shaders" and the same folders in Saved Games) after every update from ED and run a "cleanup" and a "repair" before starting to play. It had a massive effect the first time I did it but have just made a routine of it after that.

Just for the record guys, it’s the fxo and metashaders2 folders in Saved games, not metashaders.

Is it the case that the two folders are gradually repopulated, as you fly each module? If so, is there a command that can be issued to regenerate it all in one go?

"Repair" I understand. But what do you mean by "cleanup?"

why do these folders have to be deleted. too many files?

from what I understand, those contain pre-rendered content that may not fit your setup ANYMORE ( DCS-GPU-Win10 ) and as such, your DCS suffers.

I hope that makes sense, if not, blame it on me

So, just to be clear, is it the shaders folder or the metashaders folder inside the shaders folder?:music_whistling:

Good question. It is the metashader and fxo folders inside the shaders folders that should be deleted. DCS will repair even if you delete the "shaders" folders also but you will have much more to download.

I'm confused here, are you guys talking about what folders to delete for the Shaders Mod?

If so, then it's just the contents of C:\Users\xxx\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\metashaders2 and fxo you have to delete. (Note: metashaders2 and not metashaders.)

No need to remove anything in the DCS install folder.

You also have to rename (or delete) the terrain metacaches for each map, e.g. Mods\terrains\Caucasus\misc\metacache\dcs.

After that it is good practice to empty the 2 Saved Games folders above before each update.

Actually removing the core shader folders had quite an impact on my frames.

I think it's interesting that deleting these folders is becoming standard practice and is even being suggested by ED staff as standard practice.

For many this seems to have quite a significant impact on performance. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have DCS-updater purge these folders?

Million dollar question right here.

It's just downright silly that we have to do this.

Many games refresh shaders when they update or detect a new GPU driver installed. Might be a good thing for DCS to do it by itself.

Thank you to everyone in this thread for talking about this. Can we clarify the instructions:

  1. Delete the contents of:
    • Saved Games\DCS\metashaders2
    • Saved Games\DCS\fxo
but not metashader2) s or any other files here

[*]Delete DCSWorld\Bazar\shaders\ ...?? Which sections from this? The metashaders subdirectory? Specific files in that?

My shaders folder is around 61mb and metashaders is just under 2mb right now.

Is there any good reason this is not done automatically by the game? It seems that a lot of players are going to be taking massive frame rate hits for no good reason.

This is new to me too, I’d like clarification about the process and if possible it would of course great if ED could in fact make this process redundant through an upgrade.

My suggestion is not deleting any file in DCS main installation, only in Saved Games. You can indeed delete the whole dcs folder inside saved games and it will be regenerated in next run (you will lose your configuration as you know).

If you delete fxo and metashaders2 you'll note that the launch of a mission takes longer.
