sze5003 Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 Hi, got this module today and am learning it through the great training missions! I notice on my Samsung Odyssey, in VR the cockpit is way too dark/black. I can't make out any of the switches or buttons as they are also black/grey and hard to see. I noticed in the training video of the startup in the other thread that the lighting is much brighter and almost every switch is visible and able to be distinguished. Gamma in DCS is set to 1.7 since it's fine like this for other modules. Any recommendations on what settings I should have on to make the cockpit look like in the training video? My settings are mostly high, PD of 1.8 and I think I have global cockpit illumination off. Should this be on? some1 Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 Yeah, the cockpit is dark, just like every other Razbam cockpit. One can say it's just part of "artistic license", but it hinders the usability somewhat. I can't even tell which radio channel is selected, VR or not. Compare that to MiG-15, which has similar cockpit shape and were probably painted the same colours in real life. sze5003 Posted March 2, 2019 Author Posted March 2, 2019 Ok I thought there was something wrong with my system or headset. It does make it very difficult to learn where the needed switches are. The harrier is also dark but recently I think it's been pretty visible, less dark than when I first got it but at least there you can make out where everything is located. Paganus Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 You can try the global cockpit illumination option in settings, if you haven't already.
streakeagle Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 It does no good to have ultra realistic textures if the game engine displays them in a way that you can't see. So the solution is textures with washed out colors per the comparison pics above. Fortunately, textures can be altered by the end user to suit their needs. At least the canopy glass is clean ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
sze5003 Posted March 2, 2019 Author Posted March 2, 2019 I managed to be able to see a little better by turning on the cockpit and back panel lighting to full brightness, even in day time. I'll try global cockpit illumination too next. Eldur Posted March 2, 2019 Posted March 2, 2019 (edited) Not just in VR. It's pitch black on a sunny day. Even turning on the flash light doesn't make it any brighter. Just the white parts get a little bit whiter while the dark ones stay dark. Wasn't even able to see the switches I had to flick in the tuts, just clicked blind into the yellow carets and hoped. And I was to select the blue channel. They're all different shades of black though... I even run DCS at 2.8 gamma (0.6 more than default). As soon as direct sunlight comes in, it looks absolutely fantastic though, your artists did a great job there! I guess this is also a common DCS issue as it occurs in all planes, but RAZBAM ones are affected more than others. Apparently ED also needs to set some screws to get indirect lighting right there. Another issue is light adaption / virtual eyes. DCS does not model the fact that even dark things can be seen better after a while being heads down. I've seen this in some other sims already though, would be great to have here as well. Those are HDR effects though and since ED switched over to deferred shading, I have no clue if and how this would be possible. Edited March 2, 2019 by Eldur

YoYo Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Remember about Flash Light (in know it could be useless for VR) but for normal screen it helps in sunny day also (LAlt+L). sze5003 Posted March 5, 2019 Author Posted March 5, 2019 Yup indeed it's also much better in VR as well. I can actually see the colors on the radio buttons. Still need to turn on the lights in the cockpit even during the day but everything is more visible now and not muddled in dark shades. Even with cockpit lights off I can now at least see the switches distinguishing each one from the other on the side panels. Thanks a lot for the fix! I'm enjoying this jet quite a bit despite the f14 coming very soon. It trims easier than the f5 and this means I can actually quickly trim it and change radio beacon frequency without freaking out that I might end up going in all sorts of directions.
