Thick8 Posted June 1, 2019 Posted June 1, 2019 For interacting I have a multi-gesture trackpad mounted in front of the throttle that can do anything a 3 button mouse with a scroll wheel can do. I also made the pinky paddle on my stick a modifier key so most of the HOTAS buttons serve dual function. I use VA for coms and Cortana talk to text for multi-player texting. For near-sightedness I have the Widmovr lenses. I packed up my physical pit two weeks after I got VR. Never regretted the decision once. Eagle7907 Posted June 1, 2019 Posted June 1, 2019 So on a hunch I went to try and find some sort of VR demo. Nada. I’d have to drive 40 minutes to get to a store that has a demo. Particularly Oculus. I noticed on a display model it looks like it has cameras on the exterior. Can those cameras be used to view a keyboard? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro Yes the Rift S has a pass through camera to allow you to see your environment around you. It is a little rough in it's current incarnation, makes seeing specific keys a little tough - at least it was for me. Oculus is working on improvements to it for future updates. flameoutme Posted June 2, 2019 Author Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) Day 2 with the Rift S. I was able to move my prescription lens from my oculus go directly into the Rift S. This was *so much* more comfortable than wearing my glasses, and I believe it improved quality overall. Today I shut off labels and played dog fighting with a mig 29 guns only. I simply can not put the realism of dogfighting like this in VR in words. I will simply say I ate dinner about an hour ago and wish I had played before dinner rather than after. Not joking here. Also I got a taste of having to careen my neck around to follow the bad guy as he passed me and tried to do an end around. It was so REAL. I am not a pilot, so truthfully I don't know what is real for sure. My rig is high end and so I had some aesthetic features on like dirt and light rays really enhancing the feeling I was in that cockpit. Quite by accident I had the a/c in my room on and it was blowing air across me... adding to the effect.. it was WILD! Finally I wanted to mention that between the prescription lenses, increasing pixel density to about 2 in settings, and fiddling around with other settings, I was able to read gauge text clearly without zoom. One thing I learned is that the VR Settings menu button in DCS results in poor quality visuals. No doubt needed with some systems, but I have a I-9700 and 1080 card and did not need to dip down that low. My advice is experiment. My hats go off to real fighter pilots, you have to have guts of steel. Edited June 2, 2019 by flameoutme

Sandman1330 Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 My first VR experience was in the Spitfire. I was taxiing with the canopy open, and leaned out the side to see past the nose. Completely subconsciously, I placed my arm on my desk beside me as if it was the canopy rail, and as I leaned out I could see the exhaust stacks firing in front of me. I could almost smell the exhaust in my face! I remember that somewhere during installation there is a warning that when moving about in the Oculus home environment do not sit down on the furniture - as there is nothing there!

I remember way back when, I sat in the Hog in VR, for the very first time and reaching out to the panel in wonderment. Of course, it wasn't there. I placed my monitor on the desk where the canopy bow should be and spawned in stood up with hands on canopy bow and then settled down into the seat. Little things that help immersion.. Cowboy10uk Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 Welcome to the party pal. ;) That first experience of VR aviation is just mind blowing. I remember being in complete awe as I actually got vertigo when lifting off in the Huey. The feeling of immersion is second to none, and when paired with a jetseat is fantastic. Sadly however. I soon found that apart from point A to B flying, I couldn’t spot anything. Fighting in it was a nightmare, so I found myself back using the 4K tv for visuals instead. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve not given up on VR, and I strongly believe it is the future to our hobby. In fact I am picking up a Rift S tomorrow, after reading on here how much the clarity has improved. I’m keeping everything crossed that this time, I will be sticking with VR for good. Phantom88 Posted June 2, 2019 Posted June 2, 2019 **Welome Sir** I'll add one of my first VR Experiences slso.... I had my Rift CV1 for about 2 days...I was flying The Mi-8 in enemy territory when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash from the ground...incoming missile....I tried to evade but it was no use.....got hit in tail section and I started to spin wildly...was losing altitude rapidly....Suddenly the ground came rushing up towards me....I reached out my hand to the Mi-8 front panel to brace for impact.... I actually reached out my arm!!!...but of course there was no panel or cockpit....just my PC's mouse and keyboard.....but my mind had been tricked!! It actually thought I was in real Danger and reacted to protect myself.....I took off the headset and stared at my PC in Disbelief!!!!! Patrick

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro I'm running a 1070 with a Rift , and spend most of my time SP very low over the Caucasus . My settings are as follows : PD 1.0 Cockpit shadows low Civil traffic low Water high Visibility distance medium Msaax2 Flat terrain shadows Trees 62% All other settings "off" or lowest possible Given these , yes you can run a CV1 or similar with a 1070 , at least until you can afford something better . With the upcoming VR optimisation , you will also be enabled to run a Rift S at somewhat higher settings as well .
