One of my first VR experiences was after taking a few gulps of a freshly opened bottle of beer that my wife just put in my hand, I promptly droped it on the floor from 2ft thinking I had set it down on the hueys center panel.

LOL. mine was when I slammed by face into the lamp because it was a little closer than I thought. I mean, in VR, it *wasn't* there, dammit.

:D

I just dropped some bombs in A10C and was tracking the bombs and flares as i was egressing.

Well as you know, I’ve had a Rift since DK2 and to be honest was meh about it. I could see the potential and had some cool moments, but generally I stick to 2D simming.

Today I upgraded to the Rift S, after hearing the positive reviews on this forums.

OMG, this is truly how VR was meant to be, everything is legible, the vast majority of labels are crystal clear, and the immersion. Oh god the immersion.

I think I’m now a complete convert. This new 1.5 generation of HMDs are finally hitting the clarity we require. Can’t put into words just how impressed I am currently with the new Rift S.

Well i guess you've sold me . Was very interested in the Index , but even with the upcoming VR optimisation , i'd have to limp along with my 1070 until i could afford a better GPU . Guess i'll get the S instead , and save that money for a motherboard/cpu/cooler .

Ditto 1.7

Yep, 1070 here. I run it at quite high settings and 1.5pd. No problems here.

Are you guys over clocking your card by any chance?

I have a low end 1080 from zotek, its not a 1080Ti. I paid just over $500 off amazon new about 4 months ago. It's a small card, just two fans. Very happy with it. No over clocking.

Well as neither directee has yet replied , i'll jump in and say mine is not overclocked . I did run higher PD's at one time , but traded it for terrain shadows .

I run a 1070ti on the CV1 version of the Rift. It runs fine. Obviously you'll get a bit of slowdown if you try to max the graphics but it's seems fine with medium-high settings.

From what I've read, the Valve Index will be considerably better than the Rift-S. However with the higher resolution you'll likely need a 2080 GPU and fairly new system to use it.

If you've got a 1080 or less, and just want to be able to read the gauges then it sounds like a Rift-S will be the way to go.

I currently have a Rift CV1, 1070ti and a 3-4 year i5 PC - so I'm going to wait until the Index comes out to see how it goes. Will either buy the Rift-S for my current setup, or get the Index along with a new gaming PC.

The price might be the biggest issue. Here in NZ a decent PC would start at $3,500 NZD and the Index looks like it will cost around $1670 NZD(with shipping). The Rift-S on the other hand would be 2.5 times less than the Index.

Agreed VR is a complete game changer. Had my first experience last week.

I got bad news for anyone who has invested in hardware cockpits, gauges, multi-monitor setups etc to add realism... sell them now while you still can.

Have to disagree with the cockpit statement. Flying VR in a cockpit is far better than without. When you reach out and actually touch the things in the cockpit it really adds to the realism, or you grab the ACM handles on the cockpit frame to check your six. And you just can't beat opening the canopy and resting you're arms on the cockpit frame as you taxi back after a mission.

One of the best moments was actually in War Thunder flying the Swordfish in a torpedo attack. I had bass shakers all setup so you could feel the rumble of the engine and the flak exploding near by. For a laugh I placed a large fan in front of the pit, so you'd lean out to look over the side of the open cockpit and get blasted in the face by wind :)

It would look really dorky but was always fun when somebody would poke fun at it, then have a go and be totally blown away. Oop sorry, that went a bit off topic.

Thanks. That makes it much cheaper for me. So it sounds like with a 1070, I will take a hit slightly with the graphics judging by the optimizations coming, but overall doable. A 1080 card will be more than a rift S! Cards are so damn expensive!

My 1070 has given me a lot of fun with the OG Rift , and it will doubtless do the same with a Rift S with the VR optimisation . May even be able to bump a setting...

Didn't mean to put a 'pit down. It would of course be cool and add to the experience. All I meant was, for me at least, the purchase of VR will (has) deliver(ed) a ton of realism, more than a pit. And if the valve index delivers what I think it will (because of its specs), I'll be replacing the rift s with it come fall.

Anything that puts us in the moment more fully is ok by my book.

I agree with your point. I’ve seen lots of pit projects that seem a bit redundant in the face of VR. I’m glad I didn’t go the route.
