coldvisionmusic Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 As I was setting up a mission in the persian gulf map, I noticed how the AI aircrafts behaved when they came around for their landing approach. I placed the carrier in a valley near Khasab, in order to lay hidden from the enemy. But it seems like the AI doesn't respond to obstacles in the landscape, when it has begun it's approach (only aircrafts on the carrier that might be in the way). As a result of that, half the squadron currently flies straight into the mountain and crashes. I know this is not an urgent fix, as the ED team probably has enough on their hands with the F-16C/F/A-18C. But it would be nice to see a fix to this in the future, as it kinda destroys the experience a bit :)
Tholozor Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 They probably don't do collision avoidance because it's not intended for the carrier to have obstacles around it while recovering aircraft. coldvisionmusic Posted October 14, 2019 Author Posted October 14, 2019 That's definitely a good point, as carriers are usually placed in the open where it's free of obstacles. Without knowing how much it takes to implement something like collision avoidance, it would still be cool to see in a future update :)
BaD CrC Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 Would you really hide an aircraft carrier in a small bay? The idea sounds fun but I guess no planes would then land or take off. Like when the carrier is docked at an harbor. https://www.blacksharkden.com http://discord.gg/blacksharkden
coldvisionmusic Posted October 14, 2019 Author Posted October 14, 2019 I know it's not the most optimal place to place an active carrier in terms of the surroundings. The aircrafts can easily take off, but when they come around again, it becomes a bit more difficult :-)
fagulha Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 The carrier must be moving for carrier ops. At least 25 knots for getting the headwind correct. About carrier ops: "The younger pilots are still quite capable of holding their heads forward against the forces. The older ones have been doing this too long and know better; sore necks make for poor sleep.' Habu_69 Posted October 25, 2019 Posted October 25, 2019 While I sympathize with frustrations regarding the competence of AI in general, the scenario proposed is completely unrealistic. Carriers do not hide in sheltered waters or bays. They ONLY operate in the open ocean and have their aircraft squadrons as the main means of self-protection. When in port, flight ops are impossible and if aircraft must be on/off-loaded in port, cranes must be used. IMO ED should not be expected to squander programmer resources on ridiculous/unrealistic scenarios. My $.02.

toutenglisse Posted November 16, 2019 Posted November 16, 2019 (edited) I post here because it's the same problem. My AI wingman in F18c took off from Lar airbase, turned right and crashed on mountain. I suspect maybe a "panic" move in relation with a not far SA15 that spawned before AI WM took off. But the crash on mountain is probably bug. I wondered if he had been shot down at start until I watched replay. Long track joined, but mission started at 7h00 and he crashed at 7h07-40s. Track is already polluted by my time-acceleration commands. EDIT : in fact track is short since I watched it and exit...WMbug.trk Edited November 16, 2019 by toutenglisse
