MBot Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Does anyone know why the Ka-50 is nicknamed Black Shark? The shark thing is understandable, it indeed looks a bit like a shark. But why black? After all the the Ka-50 is famous for NOT being night-combat capable.
Flyby Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Great Question! I'd like to know too! The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
urze Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 There was a movie in Russia called Black Shark (?) , starring the Ka-50. (similar to Airwolf ) Since than everybody called the Ka-50 BlackShark. Maybe some other forum member has more info about that... Leftside Limited - ideas and solutions
RvETito Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I think it's just an advertising name. I'm not sure how it's called in the russian army though I've worked together with Klimov Design bureau representatives (developpers of helicopter engines and gearboxes) and they did call it 'Black Shark'. Flyby Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 I crack me up! Hmmm...Black Shark versus Blue Thunder...hmmmmm.... Oh wait. Blue Thunder got run over by a train!:megalol: Still it would be nice to know more about why the Black Shark is called so. AirTito can you find out what the Russian army calls it (besides the Ka-50). urze Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 aka Hokum (nato code) or Werewolf Leftside Limited - ideas and solutions
MBot Posted November 20, 2007 Author Posted November 20, 2007 They call their own planes by NATO code?
Dmut Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 No. Army doesn't use names "Hokum" or "Werewolf" or "Blackshark". They call it just "Ka-50". "There are five dangerous faults which may affect a general: recklessness, which leads to destruction; cowardice, which leads to capture; a hasty temper, which can be provoked by insults; a delicacy of honor which is sensitive to shame; over-solicitude for his men, which exposes him to worry and trouble." -akyla- Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 maybe my signature helps somebody:P it looks a bit sharky to me [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Frostie Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 No. Army doesn't use names "Hokum" or "Werewolf" or "Blackshark". They call it just "Ka-50". Ive heard they call it 'sex on wheels' but that could have been lost in translation. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. Force_Feedback Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 There is a video of ka-50 pilots in Chechnya praising the Ka-50 and telling all the other flyboys were jealous at them. Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Flyby Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 About old Blue Thunder I think they call it Werewolf, aren't they? Regards!! Actually Blue Thunder was a movie about a Los Angeles cop who flew a special anti-riot helicopter that "the man" was going to use to wipe out rioters. Roy Schieder starred in it. The helicopter looked like a gunship, but the it was all pretty lame. In the end Schieder set the heli down on the railroad tracks just in time for the 8:15 special to smack into it (thus denying "the man" of his super crowd-death-dealer) Flyby The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
EvilBivol-1 Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 After all the the Ka-50 is famous for NOT being night-combat capable. Not at all. That's only true for those 'in the know' - which is largely those following this simulator. To the Russian-inclined general public, the Ka-50 is no less mythical than the Apache. Whether this status is deserved or not is another question. ;) But in any case, Black Shark was indeed the title of the movie which made the helicopter famous in the early-mid 90s. I would guess it was an idea of the Kamov company. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
CoNa Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Does anyone know where I can find this TV series? Would be fun to see a part even though I wont understand what they say.

leafer Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 Shark? Who ever said it looked like a shark has done a great disservice to one of the world's most awesome predators. Argh! This ugly...helicopter...thingamajig...yuk...looks more like a retarded grasshopper. It is, in my opinion, the ugliest attack helicopter ever! Having said that, some uglies do grow on you. The Su-25, for example, is an ugly mutha but it grew on me in no time. Compare to the M-4, the AK-47 is fugly as hell, yet, it grew on me. But I just can't get excited about the Ka-50 even though evidence says it'd be awesome to fly. I'm saying they should have modeled the Apache first. :D ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
Malleus Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 You know the saying - gunships don't fly, instead they are so ugly that they are repulsed by the Earth itself. I guess that's why the Ka-50 can climb very good...:)
Nordic Posted November 20, 2007 Posted November 20, 2007 C'mon it's not that ugly. Take a look at the Mi-family instead :P
kiss4luna Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 what the Russian army calls it (besides the Ka-50). Flyby they call it "little sweet honey":megalol: RTX 3070
amalahama Posted November 21, 2007 Posted November 21, 2007 Ok, but I wonder... Why ED is trying to make a Ka-50?? Why not a Su-25? or an A-10? or a Mil-Mi24? or a Tornado?. Anyway, Ka-50 is not going to enter on service (at least not in a large number) and it's relatively unknown for the occidental market. I heard sometime ago Kamov paid ED to make a Ka-50, but I'm not sure. Regards!!!
