Since we have self propelled arty and rocket launchers in DCS that you can control in Combined Arms.I would like to see ED add towed arty and rocket launchers from WWII to modern times to the game,so AI infantry could use it and player controlled in CA too.Not to mention it would make great use for mission creations in the mission editor.

+1 would absolutely love to see towed equipment, there's tonnes of examples to choose from.

At the moment there's a fair few assets in DCS that are towed (Patriot, Hawk, ZU-23-2, Rapier and the WWII AA guns IIRC), however there isn't any towed artillery, and none of the aforementioned equipment can actually be towed by a vehicle (though AFAIK you can use triggered spawning as a workaround).

Yes. Some time ago ED actually mentioned (Chizh I think) that towed equipment is something they want to include, but if my memory serves they said DCS engine is not ready for this.

I would expect this is somewhere on their to-do.

Chizh has talked about towed hability has on plans by ED. In fact, all WW2 AAA artillery, Rapiers and other systems has actually towed ready and have deploy / undeploy animations ready to use. Meanwhile, RAZBAM has working on 105mm L118 Light Gun to South atlantic map asset pack.

Yes,hopefully they will include workable mortars into this too since it's already in game as a static object. As well as maybe railway and coastal arty for WWII also.

The 2B11? AFAIK that works, you can find it under ground units -> artillery -> 2B11

Then it's an advanced waypoint action -> perform task -> fire at point, it takes a couple of minutes but it does fire.

Probably crew animations and packing unpacking etc would be the issue.

Not really. They already made someone hammering something with a wrench, so that's not the problem.

Missing the Towed funtionality (trailer / towed) and the road interaction, no the animations.

Yeah, but thats different from animating a whole procedure with X guys doing things abcd. I'm sure from a technical standpoint its ok, but you still gotta script it and make sure it looks plausible. And at the end of the day how much does it really add to the game versus better system XYZ?

Meh, while having animated crew hook stuff up would definitely be the better option, IMO it isn't really that necessary, if we want to reduce the workload. Just having the ability to tow stuff would be the better step-up, even if it just snaps between being towed and being detached.

Sure it's less than ideal, but it works as an interim and a step up to what we have to do currently. If you want to emulate transportation of a towed system, you currently have to set-up 2 groups - one at the pick-up point and one at the drop-off point, with the one at the drop-off point set to late activation. You then have to get your transporter, drive to the first group, deactivate the first group, then have the vehicle drive to the drop off point where the second group is and when it arrives activate the second the group. It's a crude but functional way of essentially performing the same thing.

Having them actually be towed is a better system from a purely visual standpoint, it would look far less clanky and of course more realistic and immersive.

In terms of animations, all that would really be necessary is to animate tow-bars, legs extending/retracting and wheels being placed/folded/unfolded where applicable. There are a fair few assets in DCS with this already present; the HY-2 RADAR has animated legs and towbars, Rapier has removable wheels, legs and the generator(?) detaches also. Everything mounted on a trailer in the WW2 asset pack is appropriately animated for being towed and being deployed.

These however are the exception, the majority of towed equipment (including the more recent SNR-75 and RD-75 RADARs of the SA-2 SAM system) don't feature such animations.

I agree that there are quite a few steps that could be released bit by bit:

- Include towed artillery pieces that are stationary, just like ZU-23s or the mortars

- Include a limbered version of some of the towed equipment as a separate vehicle for mission design purposes

- Tricky bit, admittedly: implement a system of vehicles (trucks) generally hitching up trailers?

- Optionally work on limber/unlimber animations.
