Hi there!

As i am new to DCS i dont get the difference between the two versions.

I bought it on steam because...i dont know, because i bought everything on steam.

Now i saw pre-order for Syria and i am wondering why i can not use it.

Is it possible to swap to non steam version since i think it has some advantages?

2nd: Is it possible for me to use open beta aswell?

Yes, you can transfer from steam. Go to the Steam support forum. First stickied message.

Yes. Just start SteamVR before launching DCS.

Standalone dcs will launch steam vr on its own, no need to launch it yourself

Does it make sense, switching from Steam to Standalone? Any advantages?

Are the Setttings (Controler profiles) stored or do i have to make everything new from scratch?

... Now i saw pre-order for Syria and i am wondering why i can not use it.

A pre-order means that you purchase the DLC before it is released ... that's why you can't use it until it does get released.

Is it possible to swap to non steam version since i think it has some advantages?

Yes.

2nd: Is it possible for me to use open beta aswell?

Yes, but please please, do not use Openbeta if you can't later stand the inevitable bugs that it may have.

Does it make sense, switching from Steam to Standalone? Any advantages?

This is kind of a religious issue ... for me there are several advantages to go stand alone:

- I can take advantage of Sales on the two stores, instead of just relying on Steam sales.

- Sales are more frequent on ED store than on Steam.

- ED Store has a reward system where you can get back 10% of each purchase.

- Finally, and nost important for me, is that my purchasing dollar supports the developer more on ED store than on Steam, as the latter takes a 30% cut of every purchase.

Steam has some advantages too:

- Usually higher download speeds.

- Easier to use file repair utility.

- For international customer, the currency exchange of Steam is sometimes much better than ED store.

Are the Setttings (Controler profiles) stored or do i have to make everything new from scratch?

I don't really know the answr to this one, I assume that you should be able to copy the Controller configuration files from one to the other, but I have never actually tried it.

Best regards,

Eduardo

I typically purchase my modules from Steam, and then transfer module to stand alone if I want to fly the stand alone version (only because my Nevada map is on stand alone - not purchased via Steam). This way I have both if needed.

However, I typically fly the Steam version, unless I need my Nevada map. I like that Steam monitors my DCS hours, as sometime it seems the pilot log isn't accurate and DL is much faster, as stated above. I just prefer the Steam interface.

Anyhow, my $0.02 worth!

Good day!

Im sure settings port over, u can save ur controller settings ( i make backups before any updates just in case)

To me, it doesn't make sense to go on steam. Im not comfortable with the monopoly valve has over video game distribution. If you go standalone, you benefit yourself as well as the devs if you plan on buying more modules.

Steam takes a chunk out of the payment to the devs, so theyre better supported by you buying direct

If you buy direct from ed, you earn a cumulative bonus that doesn't exist on steam. Look at the Miles program ED has....currently ive accumulated $53 worth of discount thats just waiting for the Hind to drop :)

Yep, I started on Steam for the exact same reasons - because that's how I bought everything else. I eventually migrated to non-steam standalone and it seems to load slightly faster, but I have not seen a massive jump in performance. Maybe a little, but I still have to use Steam for VR since I'm using a Reverb and it requires Windows Mixed Reality to run. So maybe it would be faster if I had a different headset.

Yes, you can do OB on both Steam and Stand-alone.

What I like about stand-alone over Steam is it seems that you see newsletters and announcements easier and it's easier to pre-order stuff that is not available on Steam. Also, I think that stuff arrives in both Stable and OB sooner in stand-alone (SA) than it does in Steam. Overall, my experience with SA has been slightly better than running through Steam. But not significantly so. It's not night and day by any means. Also the transition was a piece of cake. It moved all my modules over from steam with no issues. Follow the instructions on the sticky and it will be easy.

Oh forgot to add.... the one thing I had to do was manually copy any missions I built and control stick profile settings from the steam directory to the standalone directory. So make sure to copy anything over you want to keep before deleting the Steam files. Or just keep the Steam directory, it won't hurt it to stay there.

Just noticed a 25% price INCREASE on Steam on all things DCS. What's more concerning is that the Australian dollar has increased in value which should lead to cheaper prices across the board.

Have prices risen on the US sites?

It was $105 only a day ago, now $129

Perhaps there's a 'sale' coming ;)

Seems like prices have been increased on DCS modules in general. But that's definately a lot. In the german Steam store the Viper went from 69€ to 74€ today. I'm pretty sure it was still at 69€ yesterday. Thank god i got all modules i'm interested in for now...
