DD_Fenrir Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Hi all, I made these for my squad to help them visualise the scan patterns of the AWG-9 and just how little of the sky the antenna is actually covering at any given moment and give them impetus to start being a bit more proactive with asking Jester to slew their scan patterns around. I have attached here in case any one else finds them useful. 1
captain_dalan Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Awesome diagrams mate. I remember doodling on office papers during lunch time, back when we didn't have TWS AUTO, trying to do basic trigonometry and point Jester the right way! :D Modules: FC3, Mirage 2000C, Harrier AV-8B NA, F-5, AJS-37 Viggen, F-14B, F-14A, Combined Arms, F/A-18C, F-16C, MiG-19P, F-86, MiG-15, FW-190A, Spitfire Mk IX, UH-1 Huey, Su-25, P-51PD, Caucasus map, Nevada map, Persian Gulf map, Marianas map, Syria Map, Super Carrier, Sinai map, Mosquito, P-51, AH-64 Apache

DD_Fenrir Posted August 29, 2020 Author Posted August 29, 2020 Thanks chaps. Like you dalan, I could have done with these 18 months ago, but if they're of use to anyone else now, so much the better. I'd love to be able to make a dynamic 3D model with adjustable mode, elevation, azimuth, and bar scan inputs with an animated antenna icon so that you can really start to visualise just how the radar is scanning over time - that would really help those new to modern jets to get a grip on how their radar behaves and what it cannot see, as I get the feeling that some assume that a radar = 180* Situational Awareness in front of your aircraft and are surprised when it doesn't meet that expectation.
dundun92 Posted August 30, 2020 Posted August 30, 2020 Even though I dont fly the 14 there are really nice, this is really what newer players need to know. Frostie Posted October 20, 2020 Posted October 20, 2020 I'm only reading this on my phone but i'm sure your calculations are incorrect. I think you may have forgotten to double up the altitude after working out the trig. For example you have 8300ft @25nm 4 bar scan of 6.3 degrees, this would be tan 3.15deg x 25nmi = 1.375nmi x 6076ft = 8359ft but that is only half the scan area (3.15deg) so multiply by 2 gives +/- 8359ft (16,718ft). Quite a big difference. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 51st PVO "BISONS" Fastest MiG pilot in the world - TCR'10 https://100kiap.org

I got the figures from here: https://flyandwire.com/2019/05/18/f-14-rio-awg-9-antenna-elevation-study-part-ii/ However I will review and see if they require amendment.

DD_Fenrir Posted November 13, 2020 Author Posted November 13, 2020 Hi all, I updated the original post to now include images that show corrected data for the elevation altitude coverage; it was indeed that I had taken the tabled data as verbaitim, unaware that it represented a +/- value. Apologies to all for any confusion this may have caused and thanks again to Frostie for his help in identifying the inaccuracy. 2

DD_Fenrir Posted November 14, 2020 Author Posted November 14, 2020 Re-updated as something had not caused the png rendering to be very clear so now they are clearer; also added an 30 degree off boresight azimuth diagram to illustrate that scan patterns are not tied to boresight.
