My 3090 Settings for my G2 (2.7.11)

Hi 🙂

I set up my DCS exactly as you did, settings, FSR, IC pass shaders and others.

I have a stable 60 fps on my Reverb G1 and 6900 XT but even in a simple mission, once there is some destroyed vehicles with smoke, there's a huge drop in FPS, going to 25-30.

Do you have this problem too ? thanks

No, but, I force my frame rate to 45fps, and I have a more performant graphics card, and I don’t use the ic shaders… but a lot depends on the map and scenario… smoke can have a really bad impact on perf.

So if you are running at 60hz, anything out of tolerance will drop you to 30fpd

Which shader do you use most of the time?

Do you force your framerate with retroprojection ? because I read that 3090 have this retroprojection artefacts problem too.

Thanks

I say in my settings, but I use clear water which is more performant than ic pass, as I play mostly solo that makes most sense.

I force motion smoothing on.

Reprojection is what happens when your frame rate rises above the limits for your refresh rate 18ms or so for 60hz… 11ms for 90hz, and 22ms for 45hz.  Yes you will get some ‘artefacts’ in nearly all scenarios it all depends on what works best for you.

@speed-of-heat have you done any testing with 2.7.7. I wont be able to play until next Monday at the earliest, and was wondering if the new patch brought some more improvements or did it degrade performance, etc.

so i havent done any hard testing, im still recovering from COVID, but, a couple of things because ED encrypted metashaders, the shaders mods dont work except for IC pass and simplex, that said i havent seen a massive performance drop or improvement when i'm using those shaders, i'm using simplex.  but i havent had the energy to do a hard set of test cycles

Sorry to hear that mate, I remember you said you were fighting off a cold a few weeks back, so did it turn out to be COVID ? Here's wishing you a speedy recovery!

Would you happen to have a copy of Simpex 2.0 ? Looks like only 2.1 is available in user files. .. or is 2.0 just 2.1 without the -- Compose.hlsl commented out ?

People are reporting an average of 10 FPS lost, oh boy....here we go again.

That's worrying. I'm kinda teetering on the edge of running the update as I'd love to see the improvements...but, my VR experience is damn near perfect at the moment (due in no small part to this thread) and I really don't want it spoiled !

I do have the disk space to do a seperate install but never tried that before. Maybe I'll read up on it while the dust settles and in the meantime I'll run some FPSVR baselines on 2.7.6 with clear water vs simplex 2.0 so I can do a comparison when I take the plunge.

..actually, are they just reporting -10 FPS because their shaders mods don't work anymore ? in which case Simplex may be the cure.

So this is what I have:

Frametime in ms  Delta From Baseline
Ver Test Baseline GPU CPU GPU CPU  Changes
2.7.6.13133 82 Test 75 9.52 8.55     Average for Baseline 2.7.6, FSR1.1, Windows 11, Hotfix Shaders
2.7.7.14727 96 Test 82 10.91 8.32 -1.40 0.24 2.7.7, Simplex Shaders, No terrain shadows

2.7.7 is slower, about 1.4ms  on GPU  about .5ms of that is as a result of the simplex shaders, that equates to a drop of about 6fps in total. Note however there is small CPU improvement, close to be margin of error but also likely to be the result of the simplex shaders on previous testing.

I had to turn off terrain shadows to make it comparable, as mustangs shadow removal mod can no longer work.

I ran some baselines using your performance track 276 against my current 2.7.6 install. I also created my own track - Shaun Track 277.trk . This is just a basic flyover the populated Batumi areas at 2000 feet with AP on. I did this just in case your aerobatic 276 track breaks again when I upgrade to 2.7.7 (It's a good thing you're not in the RAF. I can just see the poor inhabitants of the Welsh valleys shaking their fists at you as you buzz them 🤣 )

Anyway, averaging two passes against each track with Clear Water Hotfix, Simplex 2.0 and No shader mods, I get the following. I'm not running with any other mods and other settings are as per your old test 26, msaa x 2. I do also have my grass/forest/scenery sliders maxed. Medium shadows and no terrain shadows as per your findings re Mustang's

image.png

So interestingly, on my track only, Simplex seems to give marginally better performance than the hotfix in 2.7.6

Also interesting that over both tracks, Simplex is less CPU demanding, and as we're more CPU bound I guess might explain my track result.

I'll repeat when I get round to upgrading.

Just curious as I note you've upgraded to Window 11 (which I sadly won't be doing on my AMD board!)..

Do you have this option now in WMR settings?

Start Playing SteamVR Games Faster:

  • New setting available to automatically launch SteamVR when Mixed Reality Portal launches, allowing you to bypass the Windows Mixed Reality virtual home environment and jump directly into SteamVR.
  • This new setting can be found in the Settings app under Mixed Reality > Startup and Desktop > Automatic Startup.

yes i do , i dont use it ... because i tend to run a stripped down version of steamvr...  (basically i launch steamvr without steam and then kill of the webhelpers)... i don't think it buys me much and its difficult to measure because You end up loading steam to launch fpsvr... so i havent formally documented it

functionally it just launches stream vr.. the wmr house is still loaded  just it auto launches into steamvr via the wmr for steam vr bridge

it should be comming to W10 later this month/next month.

as should the fix for AMD

Thanks. Well I'm poised to make the one click BIOS change to enable TPM on my AMD board but I've read a bunch of horror stories from users who have done so and can't post anymore!

Here is the thing… all of the issues come from turning on bitlocker… (e.g. the change a measurement, and don’t have the recovery key, and so can’t unlock their disk) so don’t unless Bigfoot as after your stamp collection (digitally) you get all the benefits… just no disk encryption…

I should add that there are perf issues at present on some Amd chips… not all. That should be fixed in an up and coming release.

also i have been using BL at work for a little over 14 years ... but only on my work devices (and in that time i have only ever needed my recovery key once)

I don't believe I've ever used it. Neither business nor personal. So hopefully I'm ok.
