Vive Pro 2

Well, in all the years I've bought and sold on eBay, I have only had a couple of minor issues in hundreds of transactions.  I think buyers are well protected, much to my annoyance when I had an eBay shop!

This review hits home the most as the reviewer tested it with games that I play (DCS, MSFS, Project Cars).  With Reshade VR, these title should look even more incredible at 5K setting.

it is interesting that if you have multiple monitors connected you will not get 5K res.

Lately, I’ve been playing nonVR games via Vorpx on my Index as well since you can get 3D effects that you do not get with the flatscreen.  Games such as X-Com and Mass Effect LE look incredible in 3D (dust particles flying out of screen, etc.), and I think the Vive Pro 2 will make them look even better.

At minimum you'll need at least one controller and for seated VR, at least one base station.

Cool thx. I just ordered a new PC to go with it as well....Ouch......

Whats the difference between base station 1 & 2? Do I need the more expensive one?

1 would be sufficient, 2 would be to have the very best.

The 2.0 allows for more base stations in large areas. As I understand it more for corporate and demo setups. For typical home use, especially for seated applications i don't think there is much if any advantage.

The base station 2.0 has got improved mechanics inside; less moving parts, as far as I remember. The base station 1.0 make a sonorous/vibrant sound which could be annoying, when you´re in a silent room. This vibrant sound of the base 1.0 could get louder, when it translates on to furniture, or elsewhere they are positioned and not rocksolid mounted. I never had the base 2.0 for a direct self-experienced comparison, but have read, the base 2.0 are more improved in this regard.

If I had to buy new, I would invest that extra to get the newer base station 2.0. Also to be more futureproof.

Some useful info here on the difference between 1.0 and 2.0 base stations. I have also heard the 2.0 are as noisy and in some examples considered more noisy than their 1.0 counterparts.

Odd, can't say I hear mine when they are running - and I have pretty good hearing.

Maybe I got lucky on this.

That is my understanding as well. I just ordered the headset and a single V2 base station. I figure I can add more if I need them. I only do seated flight sims. I had a $250 credit at Dell that expired next month so it made the decision to pre order a lot easier.

that´s interesting, that you made different experience regarding the noise. Better trust your experience than my holey memory in what I´ve read on the internet.

Hace you tried to put rubber or kind of absorbing material to put between the mounting of the bases and solid parts like walls or furniture. Strangely mine had sometimes gone louder and sometimes less noisy. Meanwhile I´ve sold them and want to stick with inside-out tracking, as I only use VR for DCS and MSFS.

I was assuming you may want/need one to interact with steamVR. But I don't know for sure, maybe it can be avoided.

I think you might want to buy one controller just to be safe, a used Vive wand is fine and is almost indestructible compared to other VR controllers out there.

Once in a blue moon I get headset or basestation detection issue that would persist until the controller is turned on, so without a controller it might’ve become a problem. I’m using the old basestation 1.0 though, so this may or may not not be an issue with the newer basestation.

Some people in Europe already got their shipment tracking numbers.  I’m getting ready for mine with accessories in my hands, the very first few things to do is the pop filter stickie for the mic, thin gel facial pad from VR cover for FOV increase, and rubberbands on the headphones for audio.

Will the VR Cover for Vive Pro also fit properly for the Vive Pro 2?

Vr legion updated their review after a firmware update, now say its 99% the clarity of the g2!

https://vr-legion.de/tests/htc-vive-pro-2-im-test-der-5k-herausforderer-mit-grossem-fov/

Update May 31, 2021:

With the update of the Vive Console released today and a firmware update for the Vive Pro 2 included in it, a lot has actually changed. So much that I will have to adjust the conclusion as well. Primarily it's about the image clarity that I criticized in the test - with the update, the Pro 2 actually behaves exactly as I would have expected based on the technical data. The image is now actually very sharp and only minimally behind the HP Reverb G2 in details (such as the clarity of the writing). You have to find the sweet spot of sharpness first, but if the glasses sit correctly on your head, that's no problem and then a very wide area of the image is very razor-sharp - only at the edges, as always with Fresnell lenses, is it blurrier.

I'm a little confused by this - doesn't the Vive Pro 2 have even better resolution than the Reverb G2 at its highest (Extreme) setting? Therefore it should offer a clearer image?

It spreads those extra pixels over a wider fov plus it could be that the G2 simply has better lenses.

Also worth considering the G2 uses a lot of super sampling at SteamVR 100% default compared to the G1 at the same panel resolution which appears to be by design of the newer lenses. Higher overall number of pixels rendered it would appear than the Vive Pro 2 at the same 100% setting at its highest panel resolution, hence the reported performance improvement of the Vive Pro 2. I do wonder what they would look like applying the same resolution multiplier in SteamVR for comparison and how sweet spots will compare. Only time will tell when the headsets get out more in the wild!

Ahh, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for explaining. Looking forward to more reports too - the fact it can run at 120Hz might make 60fps with reprojection a relatively smooth experience.

Sharpness is relative because it depends on supersampling as well as sharpness setting of the panel (besides the fixed panel resolution).

If you’ve ever played with sharpness setting on your TV or monitor you’ll see that it can make the exact same TV behave differently (at high sharpness setting texts appear more sharp at the expense of halo artifacts). And this is how Reshade VR sharpness works without actually increasing the resolution—so default panel sharpness setting by software can play a role.

In VR, you also have this sweet spot thing where a headset has to be worn a certain way to perceive optimal sharpness so it’s even more complex.

I also read that there was a bug in Extreme mode of the Vive Pro 2 that caused SteamVR to render lower than full resolution, not sure if this has been fixed.

I won’t be able to do AB comparison since I don’t have a G2, but to truly test sharpness you have to make sure that all these variables are really at their native values without any enhancement applied.
