Q3ark Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 Hi guys, I was wondering if the F-16 MIDS has a voice channel like the F/A-18 MIDS does, and if so how do you transmit over it?
Crptalk Posted May 29, 2021 Posted May 29, 2021 This question was asked last year with some speculation that it should have MIDS voice but never got an answer from ED.

Q3ark Posted May 30, 2021 Author Posted May 30, 2021 Thanks gents, I thought I was going stupid not being able to figure it out.

The radio is only capable of transmitting data. 2
KlarSnow Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 MIDS voice has nothing to do with the ARC-210, separate systems completely
Ignition Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 (edited) What are the capabilities of a MIDS comunication? for example range or LOS. Is it normaly used in combat or its more like a backup system? I know its encrypted. I guess its a digital signal instead of analog. Edited May 30, 2021 by Ignition
KlarSnow Posted May 30, 2021 Posted May 30, 2021 (edited) MIDS voice and range is exactly the same limitations as MIDS itself. If you are in the link and somebody else is in the same link, and you both have MIDS Voice capabilities, you can talk to each other. It's basically VOIP, instead of a straight up radio system. If you and the listener are in the same MIDS network, you will be able to talk. It is used as a secure radio or a 3rd or 4th radio by Hornets and Superhornets all the time assuming they are in the link. Not unusual or special at all. Edited May 30, 2021 by KlarSnow 2
Hulkbust44 Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Yeah, I asked but received no reply/feedback. BLUF, depends on the MIDS terminalWouldn't be able to transmit voice, just SPI broadcasts. A/A and A/G TXDSG positions on the throttle take over what could've been MIDS comm a and b.Mobius708
Bananabrai Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 MIDS was not really designed to transmit voice, it can provoce different problems in the network. As far as I know it is not used in RL and you'll get problems in the debriefing of large exercises if you used it. It goes as far as f***ing the network for all other clients. llOPPOTATOll Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 Yes it doesDo you have a source, i’m 95% sure it doesn’t do that.
KlarSnow Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 MIDS works just fine for transmitting voice, works like VOIP or any of your internet phones... its specifically built into the network to have this capability. Only some platforms have implemented it though. its one of the core features of MIDS even listed in a brief Wikipedia search https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multifunctional_Information_Distribution_System J-voice, JTRS, Software Defined Radio etc... does not impact any other part of the network if designed to use it. The F-16 as used by the USAF does not have and should not in DCS have this functionality. It is and should be on the DCS Hornet though.

MIDS-LVT(6) does NOT have voice capability according to this. It also says it has open architecture. Meaning it can be added. And misread the voice thing and tought everyone said it dosent have mids.......
llOPPOTATOll Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 If you can find me a source saying that the USAF F-16Cs have MIDS voice that would be spectacular, but until then its irrelevant if its open architecture or not.

Yeah..the fact that there is the possibilty that everyone has a different unit is completly irrelevant specially when we have no real documentation on 4.2 on the internet.
Florence201 Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 The newer terminals came as part of later MLU packages (info from rl experience) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
