Baco Posted November 24, 2022 Posted November 24, 2022 I know its fictional and all but it will do while we wait for the navy phantoms.. No changes, no extra work, just that the carriers recognize it and we can launch from a CATOBAR carrier. 2
Dragon1-1 Posted November 24, 2022 Posted November 24, 2022 Hardly "no extra work". You'd need a launch bar, with the real E doesn't have. No dice, this is a land-based Phantom. You should be able to trap, hook is the same as on a Navy Phantom. Gear isn't, but you're not taking off anyway. 4
Czechnology Posted November 24, 2022 Posted November 24, 2022 Sadly would need changes on the model and in the cockpit. Bare minimum of addition of catapult bridle and the in cockpit controls, and in reality the gun takes up the space that the bridle uses. We've just got to wait for the naval phantom to drop, friend.
Fangs Out Posted November 24, 2022 Posted November 24, 2022 Speaking about the Bridle, what differences does it carry compared to the launch bar era of Naval aviation we have in DCS?

No, you don't need a physical launchbar in a video game. I think OP means just the game logic and keybinds. Adding some kind of frankenstein carrier capability would increase sales in the beginning, isn't that what early access is all about? 1 Modules: AH-64D, Mi-24P, UH-1H, F-14, F-18C, CA, SC Terrains: Sinai, Strait of Hormuz, Syria - Wishlist: Desert Storm map, 1950s Sinai, Navy Phantom, Mirage F1EQ, AH-64A, UH-60, MH-53, MiG-17/23/25/29, dynamic campaign, live/historical weather - smokes let's go
Dragon1-1 Posted November 24, 2022 Posted November 24, 2022 No. HB is better than that. They have certain standards of realism, and a magic catapult launch system doesn't factor into it. E is the land based version, end of the story. You'll get a Navy Phantom later. 11
Krez Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 (edited) They have already said that a Navy version will be coming. Just wait for it. Edited November 25, 2022 by Krez 3
DSplayer Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 You can try landing it manually with the hook and then using the full length of the carrier deck for a take off. 303_Kermit Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 I'd rather wait for proper B or J Don't like the idea 7
Northstar98 Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 (edited) Nah, not for me - the landing gear (specifically the tyres) can't handle the landing and doesn't have bridle hooks for the catapult. So, by all means, try and land on the carrier, but you'll have to wait for a repair for the tyres and you'll need to use the full-length of the carrier to get airborne again. Ultimately it was a land-based aircraft that wasn't carrier capable, I'd much rather get a carrier-based Phantom for naval-operations (also given that they have superior radars, and carry different Sidewinders, at least if you're talking about the J or later). Baco Posted November 25, 2022 Author Posted November 25, 2022 Yeah the tipical naysayers. Purism over playbility. yep. oh well. god fobid they use the E as a C right? LOL... Guess Ill have to wait til 2025 or 26 with some luck and maybe by then we get teh Saratoga also LOL... 3
Bozon Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 Most responders completely miss-read the OP - he said “while we wait for the navy phantom”. He is asking to be able to pretend that the E is a naval phantom and operate it from a carrier, until a proper navy model is available (which will be a long wait). I can relate to that, but this is not a good idea to mess with the model and add imaginary features that will need to be removed later. A mod on the other hand could probably do it, and this is up to the community not Heatblurr. 3 “Mosquitoes fly, but flies don’t Mosquito” :pilotfly: - Geoffrey de Havilland. ... well, he could have said it!
Cobra847 Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 Very unlikely- as we plan to start work on the Navy Phantoms very quickly and this would simply end up being a distraction 14 5 Nicholas Dackard Founder & Lead Artist Heatblur Simulations https://www.facebook.com/heatblur/
Baco Posted November 25, 2022 Author Posted November 25, 2022 Thanks Cobra I was asking for two or four lines of code on a LUA, not a detailed experience, but yeah I understand. Never Mind... Someone will Mod it, just like the Tomcats "Early weapons". Cheers.

Dragon1-1 Posted November 25, 2022 Posted November 25, 2022 FYI, this is not "two lines of LUA code". Making an aircraft carrier capable is significantly more involved than that, even without changing the model. A whole lot of things need to happen in order for it to work. 4

Omega417 Posted November 28, 2022 Posted November 28, 2022 Might be off topic, but I didnt think the Phantom ever had a Launchbar. I thought it had a Bridal system for its entire life. I could be wrong for the S/N as my knowledge of them is limited. The E is missing those Bridal connection points. But for the sake of the game and implementation I dont see a problem with a stand in "Carrier Launch System" that just makes it compatible with existing carriers, but I dont think that would be a critical path to release. 2

How are you going to visually spot a target if you can't see a post? It's cleared in these post from kind 3-rd party dev. It's not a 4 lines of code if it shall work properly. Don't see the point in not giving some people their toys, nobody is forced to use it if he doesn't want to. Great idea. For the people who want to pretend DCS is another game entirely, let the game modification people handle it. Heatblur shouldn't waste time on frivolous unrealistic "features" when the true naval version will be worked on immediately after the land-based version as has been previously stated in this very thread. Those who know about naval Phantoms know that the changes required are more than just invisible hookups to the catapult. The Phantom has to maintain a critical angle of attack to achieve a proper flyaway attitude. The F-4E cannot extend its nose strut and therefor will have difficulty achieving flyaway attitude before hitting the water without excessive wind over deck. If you have to do excessive wind over deck you might as well put it at 190kts in the mission editor and lift off vertically. I doubt Heatblur would want to mar their reputation with unrealistic capabilities built into their modules in any case. 6 1 Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills. If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! "If at first you don't succeed, Carrier Landings are not for you!"
