How does anyone play online with such poor performance

Recommended Posts

I'm running I7 -13700k, RTX 4080, 64GB DDR5, and the game is installed on a Gen4 M.2. However no matter what settings i choose on Engimas server I can only muster around 40FPS Pics included https://imgur.com/a/CkJhop4

Anyone have ideas how to improve this or am I just doomed to stutter around the sky's forever!

Is this VR or pancake mode?  I run  ryzen 5600x, 32Gb 3600 ram, and a Vega64 and get 30-40 fps in VR, which translates to 90-120 in pancake. This is single player so not the cpu intensive load that multiplayer puts on it but I usually still get over 35-45 fps in various servers. 35-40 FPS is very playable in VR. It only gets choppy below 25

No you are not doomed. With your setup you should be getting good performance even in Enigma, so I think it's your settings

This is in 2d 3440x1440p on enigma if all setting are on low its 40fps or high 40fps ( this was last night with around 40 players on the server)

In SP offline mode it sits around 120fps on high settings

lol there was a time we were all very happy with 30fps in either single or multiplayer.

But you seem to have worked it out for yourself with 40 players in game with 40fps

Normally I don't play large complex mission with high players count, or you'll end up to experience bad performance ( at least for now with current DCS release that doesn't have new multi thread support. )
What I normally do is play quite complex mission with just a dozen of players, or, if we're doing a multi-squadron mission with really high players count, mission designer are aware to make it "simple" enough with the A.I. and general units count to make the mission flyable and enjoyable.

Maybe it's just a bug that is causing server performance degradation, like bullets and weapons not de-spawned etc... But at this point only Enigma server admin can address your issues.

Your hardware isn't the bottleneck here but most likely the server. So in short - you can't do anything about it except playing on a different server or waiting for some developement. 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. I checked CPU frametime and it was 20ms on Enigma Server with 10 players. No way it can give stable 45 fps in VR.

poor performance while playing games online can be due to various factors such as internet connection speed, computer specifications, and server performance. It is essential to troubleshoot the issue by checking your internet connection speed and optimizing your computer's settings for better gaming performance. Additionally, you can try switching to a different server or contacting the game's technical support team for further assistance.

Are you overclocking your CPU ? DCS has a history of bad performance when the CPU is overclocked

I don’t see why that would be the case. My CPU is overclocked and I have no troubles. I get maybe 90 fps in big missions on Blue Flag and such. Haven’t tried Enigma. Running 4K with maxed graphics and Tacview in the background. Running ST Stable version.

I would think given the OPs system and resolution, 40fps seems rather low. Maybe it’s the server. Again I get perhaps 90 in ST mode and a 13700 is only about 6% slower than my CPU

Never had bad performance with OC, only crashes if I OC the GPU.

Cheers!

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 overclock to 4300

ADM 6900XT 2350 overlock to 2750

For over two years, never have any problem in DCS in both ST and MT in 2d monitor or VR HP Reverb/Pimax 8kx.

Well, I think it is save to say, that a stable, well done OC is not hurting the performance in DCS. Be it CPU or GPU. Quite the opposite. The keywords are "stable" and "well done" - and stable at 20C ambient isn't neccessarily stable at 30C ambient.

However - that goes a bit off topic.

I think the "issue" of OP is the server/muliplayer performance. If anything on the hardware side, the bottleneck is probably the CPU, due to tons of players and assets.

Not much to do about, unless ED makes a major leap in MP performance and/or the performance of the server scripts gets improved.

And 40 fps isn't unplayable in my book.

A good feature of AI Overclocking available on some mb is that it will continually adjust based upon ambient temps etc.

Dynamic clock speeds based on thermal and electric headroom is not even considered OC, but a basic feature on modern CPUs. What is considered OC (or Under-Volting) however is tinkering with those curves and applying any offsets. But again  - this is a completely different topic and won't help the OP with his problem. The best you can hope to gain through OC if (and only if) you are severely CPU bottlenecked is, like what, 5%? So going to 42 from 40? Not worth the hassle.

In my case in Enigma server was the Tacview. After deactivated it completely my FPS went from 30 to 60-100 depending on how much AI and player

I honestly hope, that OP is aware that Tacview can be a performance hog - especially in MP and lots of Units.

Sure in some cases overclocking doesn’t boost you that much. I had an i7-3770K which did really benefit from that going from 3.5 to 4.7GHz, so much of a boost that without it these sims weren’t even playable. But a 13900 already has such a high speed, it’s only going from 5.8 to 6.2. An extra 7%. But it’s an easy free performance boost, just one button to click on the motherboard utility.

Just went on Enigma Syria server with 12 players.  Sitting on the tarmac with high settings preset I get 110-120 FPS.  We share the same GPU and very close CPU performance, there is something in the background eating your CPU cycles, you should be above 100 FPS.

Only if you don't run into clock stretching. I don't have an Intel CPU, so I can't tell which clocks can realisticly be achieved without stretching, but for a Ryzen, it's safe to say, that the last 100-200 MHz nominal clock won't give much real world benefits if any at all.

But if it's true that others achieve triple digit fps on the same server, with the same conditions, OP has other problems. Apart from the obvious like gfx settings, I would just test without tacview and check for some rogue export scripts. (hello winwing ....)
