Tourist Map Version 1.04 - 20230617

Changes / Additions:

  • Traffic on Suez Canal now automatically 're-fills', so this map can run indefinitely on a server (user requested)
  • Gazelle starting on helipads and falling down resolved
  • Now hosted on ED's user files

Enjoy,

Very nice, I am guessing that since maps are always works in progress, new sites will appear as they get to them. Unless I am more navigationally challenged than I thought, the Temple Mount is currently a warehouse with a small Mosque in the parking lot. Dome of the Rock 31.778000 N, 35.235401 E. BTW, your A-10A tutorials made it my favorite DCS jet, iron bombs and BRTTTT in close, fast (relatively) and low.

I regards to the heliport and the helos blowing up, it happens almost all the time but in single player on the ME new mission. Not sure what’s causing it but happens frequently.

There's a war memorial N 30 34' 53", E 32 18' 39" big old AK-47 Bayonet on the muzzle of an AK sticking out of the ground.  Wouldn't have seen it except for the slow flight in a Helo.

While beauty truly lies in the eye of the beholder, especially in memorials, that object is called "Battle of Ismailia Memorial", and is marked "Ismailia Memorial' on the tourist map.

image.png

Historically, it honors the fallen from one of the battles during the later stages of the Yom Kippur War in October 1973 that took place on the west bank of the Suez Canal.

The object itself is is a gift from North Korea to the people of Egypt, which may account for the somewhat overbearing, if not outright corny, visual style.

I find it great that OnReTech go the extra mile to include these landmarks, IMHO it's what differentiates a great map from a merely good one.

Hi,

I may have missed something, but are there supposed to be any markers which are visible in cockpit for these points of interest?

I keep switching between cockpit and F10 to get to the general area, but for the smaller POI's (eg Temple Mount) I have lots of trouble finding them...

Thanks

No, the F10 map is all that we (currently) have. It's a nice idea to add some visual guides, so if I have the time I'll add some smoke or flares that you can call in from the comms menu to enhance the visuals.

My apologies for being unclear about that - if a POI's name is in "Quotes", and you go there, you are at the correct spot - but the POI currently isn't. I've spent some time to look up some of the most renown POI of that area, and some of them aren't yet represented by 3D objects. The Temple Mount is one of them. I'm hopeful that as time passes by, the intrepid people of OnReTech expand coverage of unique objects; I've even penciled in some time for a major update of this Tourist Map when the "Phase 3" update arrives come November/December: OnReTech have shown a couple of wonderful objects in their "Roadmap" thread, and I'll be happily hunting down now sights to explore (and of course am happy to accept pointers from our kind community for interesting additions to the "tourist" map)

Thanks for the reply Cfrag,

Love your idea of smoke or flares which you can call up.  Looking forward to that if you get the time.

Thanks for the explanation about the missing POI's too.

Hey, that was your idea - at least that's how I read it 🙂

I've done some preliminary tests, and wrote a small script that reads the labels from the map and converts them into destinations. I'm currently pulling this together in a 'Tour Director' script that hopefully I'll have ready before the next great update drops, so we can have guided tours to the monuments that the great people at OnReTech build.

And yes, I've also succeeded in marking landmarks on-demand, so your idea is already covered:

Now what needs to be done is putting the finishing touches on the tour director script, some testing, and OnReTech putting out more objects to ogle at.

Wow!  That looks amazing cfrag.  Thanks for doing that!  Looking forward to trying it out.

I am loving the Sinai map, especially the performance.

A beautiful kneeboard could be nice, too 🙂

Thanks for the nice mission. I created a sightseeing mission on my own first and was pretty disappointed that Massada wasnt modelled. So I was not sure if it made sense to go on look for landmarks while the map is still in development and likely such things are missing. (Looks like they have not been working yet on that in the east of the map)

Then I found your mission with that kind of research already done. Thanks for that!

Version 2.0 is out, and it includes the Tour Director as promised:

and it now also features an interactive, auto-updating guide to the nearest attraction

Can't wait for @OnReTech's next update that will bring us all these new attractions that they teased in their Roadmap.

Have fun,

MAJOR UPDATE V3.0 -- 20240811

After a (too long) wait, we finally got the Sinai Update, and it's an update of near Biblical (aptly) proportions. As the Brouhaha over some erratic and hopefully soon to be fixed aspects of the release (that can charitably be summarized by some Abrahamic quotes like "The map giveth and taketh") died down, I went over the the map, and located some 100 new tourist attraction that might warrant your visit. My thanks to @OnReTech who kindly provided me the geo locations for many of the cool new additions to the map, which significantly cut down my efforts to a mere few days of work.

So, long story short: jump into your favorite aircraft and explore Sinai Map! It's a beautiful map, being made more beautiful by ORT's attention to detail.

Enjoy,

-ch

Thank you for a great mission.

Have you included Petra yet?

N30°19.121 E035°24.992 (I think! I got those co-ordinates from the Chinook MFD, not from the DCS map).

will there be an updated tour guide, with the sight-seeing name and location published? @cfrag

This is odd - I thought it already contains that. Please be advised that the miz's name has changed to 'Sinai Tourist3' (note '3' at the end) so perhaps you have accidentally started the old version?

You know that you have the updated version if Jerusalem has much, much more to show, and looks at least as busy as this:
