Sorry for asking a stupid question. I couldn't find any useful information on Google.

What does the HUD look like about the DCS F-4 Phantom II? For example, what information can the HUD display?

Posted

Very similar in operation to the display on the F-5 module.

The gun sight. What you see in this screenshot of the module that Heatblur posted on FB is all the HUD you will get in the F-4.

Thank you for your explanation.

I'm sorry I've only flown the F14, F15, F16, F18, and A10.

How can we know where the plane is heading without flight vectors? Especially when the Navy version of the F4 lands on an aircraft carrier.

Also, how can you know that a missile has locked onto an enemy aircraft during air-to-air?

It's okay.

You need to use ADI,HSI,Variometer, Altimeter, Airspeed indicator for flight. You can see missile locked by the symbology on the radar or gun reticle.

I would suggest you download the A-4 Skyhawk module. It is free and is more like the F-4 in HUD symbology. It is also very well done for a free module. A decent HUD wasn’t really available until the A-7, which it is a shame the F-14 didn’t borrow from this. If you learn to fly and fight in the A-4 and take looks at the boat flying, you should have a pretty decent knowledge base to move to the F-4E. The procedures may not be exactly the same, but it should help. As for missile warning, that’s handled by the RWR.

Another way to practice carrier landings without the a hud is just turn the brightness down on the F-14. In fact I don’t use the hud for landing the F-14, just the AoA, alt, variometer etc

Yep, the Tomcat HUD is useless for landing due its poor refresh rate.

On landing approach you sort-of do, however: you get a feel for it and you can still look at certain objects on the ground and see how they move in relation to where you see them on the gunsight - same with the F-5. It's definitely easier in VR, but it just takes some getting used to 🙂

Best practice is to get very good at math inside of 360. +/-180 and +/-90 really quickly are necessary skills for landing at the boat. You have your backup compass ball above and to the right that is useful to a point, but isnt as accurate as your other instruments (ADI/HSI). Being able to read your HSI quickly and set it up with a proper offset takes a bit of practice but once you have it down, youll find yourself rolling out with only a 2-3 degree error which is much easier to correct than rolling out with a 20-30 degree error.

Same way you tell where a car or bicycle is headed without a vector displayed on a HUD: visual cues.

Interestingly, approximately 100 % of pilots first learn to fly in aircraft with no HUD. Many, or I'd say most, of pilots outside the military never fly any type that comes so equipped. 🙂
