I mean what on earth is this? Mother of all memory leaks...

yup, terrible.

DCS does seem to be worse with more units now, shame as the terrain rendering side of things has improved.

I have always had a particular issue with Nellis AFB. Really unsure why but it seems completely unable to handle any statics. I did some perf testing between Nellis and Incirlik, both empty maps aside from statics at the airfield. Nellis just gets really bad, maybe it's such a big area and all units have to load with no culling. However Nevada in general isn't great, even with the oldest textures.

I've just returned to DCS after a long break and stumbled on this issue. It's very inconsistent, sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't (on the same server). Also I've noticed that the bad FPS after F10 map only happens in cockpit (AH-64), if I go to external view (F2) the issue disappear until I return to the cockpit. It usually takes about 3-5 minutes for the FPS to return to normal.

Another think I've noticed is that even though it feels like the FPS is single digit it's actually only dipping from 72 to around 60-65. But I guess it can be that it's fluctuating between 0 and 65 too fast for the FPS number to update.

I will try the alt-tab fix next time, hopefully it helps but what I would really like is for ED to fix the issue of course.

I am a bit burnt out by this lagging/hick-up/fps dropping that's present lately.

A few builds ago the sim run ALOT better, this is just annoying to say the least.

Like others said before there's no consistency in when you get one oft hose freezes and for how many seconds and the amount of followups.

MAP F10 sure doesnt help but its the state of stability in general that is just ughhhh right now 😞

I not only have to avoid F10 views but I often have a similar trend even if I don’t use F10. Sometimes I may fly for 15-20 mins and have smooth gameplay 45fps in VR with a HP reverb. Then I get a drop and the sim runs at 30-32 fps and it’s a stuttering mess. However more often than not and it doesn’t make much sense I alt tab (I have a few background processes because of VR and I run a simshaker jetseat) and after tabbing through a few processes and then going back into the sim it’s back to 45fps and running smooth.
I will say that this is more with the more system demanding modules that I own. So say the F4,F14 apache. But the F16 runs absolutely fine all the time with no issues in frame drops at all for me.
But if I make the fatal error of F10 that’s it it’s not often the mission will run right again and more often than not I end up restarting dcs to get a normal frame rate again.

For what it is worth I had the same issue while hosting a MP session last night and using the Quest 3.  I was happily flying along in the Hornet on the Syria map getting 50 or so FPS with cockpit view.  Foolishly I pressed F10 and from then on had a maximum of 10 FPS.  Yuck 😞

i use a lot the mission editor, sometimes it works sometimes i have very bad stuttering in VR while preparing mission in the editor. It happens also in game if i start a game thru the mission editor.

I had the same problem. I also use a quest 3.

My fix: In the Nvidia control panel put in "CUDA  prefer system fallback"

this gives DCS a signal to stop fill up the VRAM to max, and use RAM instead . Before my VRAM was maxed out. With this option my VRAM stays at 90%. I play smoothly at 72fps on 4YA Server.

I have a 3080 10GB with 32GB RAM and ryzen 3700x

DCS tries to fill everything in VRAM even when its full, instead of using more RAM.

What driver version do you find this in?
I'm still using 537.58 (works fine on my 3080Ti) and that option is not in there.

happens only in VR. In 2D i never had problems.

i have the newest driver. Must be a new option.

so I had this issue crop up every once in a while in VR recently where my game would literally freeze on the f10 map and I'd get a new frame every 10 seconds maybe, but if I closed the map after 10 seconds or so it would run fine again, but then if I completed the mission or whatever I was doing, the main menu would then also freeze the same way and sometimes crash making me lose progress. Usually just restarting the game (or PC) fixed the issue for a while, but then it got progressively worse to the point nothing fixed it and it was happening all the time.

The thing that fixed it for me was that I deleted everything in the save game folder (except the config folder and the logbook.lua in the MissionEditor folder). I tried deleting everything but the config and the missioneditor folder but it was still doing it, it wasn't until I deleted everything in the missioneditor folder (minus the logbook.lua) that it fixed it for me. I'm assuming something got corrupted in my save. I got this solution from another thread somewhere and I was at the point where I'd try anything, and honestly surprised it worked.

Thanks for this.  Your solution created an improvement for me, but not a complete fix.  I can now swap 2 or 3 times between cockpit view and map view without any loss of FPS.  However after the third time the FPS falls away to 15-20 or lower, without recovering to 50+.

at least the crashes got fixed. But still having fps drops to 30fps. Takes some time to recover. I think my vram is just too small (10gb). Or my cpu 3700x too slow to handle those big loads of textures.

i guess i need a new CPU

i tried this solution from another thread

Please try this:

n game set preload radius to 10,000.

Go to graphics.lua in game config folder and open it with a text editor

Find those lines in the almost at the beginning of the file

Precaching =
{
around_camera = 50000;
around_objects = 10000;
around_types = {"world", "point"};
preload_types = {"map", "world", "mission"};
}

change the two bold values with a 0 for each of them.

This will stop game loading 50km of the game in full fidelity from you and also will stop loading the 10km surroundings of any objects in game (around any static active player or ai unit it is a lot of GB's)

Let me know what your experience is after this setting

i now use memcleaner to clear RAM. Once it gets over 80% it gets cleaned. Now i can spend hours on multiplayer server without fps droping to 30fps. I open f10 as much as i want.

i have mostly stable 72fps locked to my quest 3.

I haven't used the memcleaner, but changing the 50000/10000 parameters to 0/0 plus changing the preload radius from 50000 to 10000 seems to have done the trick.  Thanks very much.  I've just spent probably 15 minutes flying the Apache first, then the Phantom in SP regularly swapping between map view and cockpit view with no FPS reduction issues.

i did this as well and it def helped! cant wait for a more concrete way. all in good time. it is unfortunate that VR is a second thought to ED. since the survey showed that we are a minority.

The other thing I'm seeing is sometimes I look at the F10 map, I don't get the FPS drop, but from then on all head movements are very stuttery in VR (Quest 2). FPS is still good, but I can't move my head without nausea inducing flashing and stuttering. Moral of the story: the F10 map is not useable in VR at the moment.

I am also having this problem. Sometimes when i go F10 to F1 the screen on VR goes to bright like i am looking the sun. And i think sometimes also from F2 toF1 again i have FPS drops. I think i have a very good system and it not a hardware problem ( I7-10700k 64 ddr4 4080S). i see me  GPU getting fully loaded on OpexXR 100% and sometime more. I have to fly for sometime so the FPS goes back to normal. I do not know why this is happening and why is not fixed yet. I really can not enjoy the game

Same for me F10 to F1 Catastrophe I go from
60 fps to 10/12 fps
Same when I leave a mission without stopping the sim and restarting it
since the beginning I barely get half the usual fps
or also when I change planes it does it to me often.
So the best for me is to restart DCS from the beginning.
In the end it's tiring nervously

I have seen this a few times. For me it seems to be related to having ASW enabled. If I take the headset off and turn ASW off it seems to resolve.
