First ever DCS: F-4E Phantom II Feedback Thread - May 22nd 2024

Individual Feedback:
Technically impressive but unusable on heavy single player missions at the moment. It is unknown in what extent the performance will be improved next patch/hotfix. Box ticked or unticked on special tab to reduce load on dynamic systems, won't make a difference.

Scenarios of which are fine with: F-15E, Viper, Hornet, Tomcat, A-10CII.

Are you sure you are using Multithreading Dcs? The exe is under *dcsrootfolder*\bin-mt\dcs.exe

Confirm. I've been exclusively using it since it was released to the public.

Really decent module. Glad that Jester sounds a bit more professional than in the F-14, less Hollywood movie-ish. Now to map all the key bindings, that's the biggest hurdle.

Heatblur took a page out of Razbam's book on this one (with the F-15E). And I say well done for it. ED should have made standard on all afterburning aircraft years ago. And it wasn't for a lack of the community asking for it. Seems like something so simple to implement as well. Hope more aircraft makers (AND ED) take notice.

As for the Phantom... Well... It's Phantastic!!! It realy is!

Still haven't spend as much time with it as id like, it's been a complicated couple of days. But I made a video of my first flight, unfortunately my mic wasn't captured so my impressions that I gave in real time are lost. But Here's the video in case anyone cares to take a look, it's a bit long, so with out the narration it's probably best to do a lot of skipping ahead.

I've always liked the way BMS did it, where I can move my throttles into the detent spot and then click "Afterburner Detent" or whatever the setting is. That way I can easily configure it to be exactly where without the guess work, which is especially useful if your throttle changes aren't something you can easily tune in-game to find the sweet spot.

Definitely the best implementation, but might not be possible in DCS UI (I have no idea), the percentage setting is a decent workable implementation that gets the job done.

I keep my Warthog Throttle with a "special" calibration to use it with BMS (for the Idle detent).

  1. the grease pen does not work well in VR, probably the engine limit, the drawing area is stuck in the front blocked by the HUD and cockpit frame.

I did a quick search to see if someone talked about this already, since I just noticed the same.
I think the problem is that DCS in VR uses 2 mouse cursors: while one is being clicked on the proper area to close the pencil window, the other cursor is drawing on the drawing area...

It is indeed annoying since I can't seem to close the window because of this, and this locks out the cursor from the rest of the cockpit 🤔

*edit* luckily there is a "pencil window close" binding available, which I used to close the window.

OK, I'm blind, too. Thanks for finding them, and sorry for being completely silly.

Now it's perfect!

Awesome! Thank you for your service! We hope we do you all justice with the module.

Just curious, did you guys model random leaks of various fluids? One of the REALLY nice things about the Eagle is that it rarely leaked fluids on you and if it did, it was soon fixed. It seemed like the Phantom was always leaking something or other. It would kinda seem wrong in a way if the Phantom didn't leak on us. 😀

My only complaint are tons of random crashes.  It's hard to get past 10 minutes in a simple mission.

I have an older system and I have slashed away at graphics settings to the point where I'm easily holding 40-60fps, but the sudden crashes are killing me.

I haven't had these with any other modules.  I'm hoping that in the future the lower sim rate box will offer a drastically reduced demand F-4, maybe that will help with my crashes?

More Cowbell VF-84 Tomcat Skins!

Same situation for me. The module is amazing but my FPS are half of all the other modules I own.

The option to decrease simulation rate makes no difference.

Well you must have done something right, because I was never a big Phantom fan at all, and as a maniacal mud mover, I don't spend much time doing A2A in DCS.

And here I am going A2A in the Phantom and it's a lot of fun. 😎

Such a shame, because this bird is fire indeed.

Btw: decreasing the simulation rate/whatever it is called makes the INS go nuts after alignment without any perceptible reward in performance.
Some of my waypoints were tens of miles offset and increasingly getting worse. Without the option ticked, the INS behaved alright. I managed to get a 150-200nm quick sortie and it was reliable. Something to keep in mind.

I hope the performance gets better for a significant margin for heavy scenarios, especially single player heavy scenarios. (I like the Mission Editor a bit too much)

I thought I was the only one. I never ever ever thought about the Phantom and I'm amazed by the artwork. At this point is not really a tool like software to see numbers perform, it is intense art.

Lots of planes I would have rather had, but this is such a well put together module it can't be ignored. And you're right, it has serious artistic cred. :smoke:

One question for IronMike. You did secure the rights to use General Robin Olds image from his children or estate?

If the answer is no, you are going to get sued. Best bet is to get a lawyer and try to get the rights before you get the seize and desist letter.  I would put this in the stolen valor category.

P.S. I am a Systems Engineer not a lawyer, but I worked with lawyers enough to know how they think. I know scary.   🤪

Do active lawyers play DCS? They are worked to death. 🤪

we are in good standing with General Olds' daughter and have her permission. It's not a question of law, it's a question of decency to ask first as well. 🙂
