"Of a total of 916 aircraft acquired by the German military 292 crashed or were damaged beyond repair during the F104's time in service from 1960 to 1991. This came at the cost of 116 dead pilots, including eight U.S. Air Force (USAF) exchange pilots..."

When I look at the ratio of 292 out of 916, it's still better than the outcome of my flights in DCS.

Well, the F-104 was indeed called "The Widowmaker", and I'm sure people at the time had valid reasons for that. But the other day I saw a documentary that claimed that reputation was made to sound worse than it actually was. Sadly, I don't remember the point that it was making.
Fair to say though, that the experience level of the pilot would have had a strong inverse relation to the chances of things getting out of control.

Widowmaker was applied by popular media.

While the Germans saw it lawn darting, the Spanish didn't lose a single airframe during its service with them. The Japanese only lost 3.

It's really a reflection on how important in type training really is.

Also if you use your fast high altitude interceptor, as fast high altitude interceptor, or as a fighter bomber.

In combination with a good mission planner THE ONE feature I desperately miss in DCS.
