Buzzer1977 Posted February 1 Posted February 1 nullF-14A/B has sometimes a locked, wired up ACM whenulln starting mid air. Seem it happens pretty randomly when starting a mission. Jayhawk1971 Posted February 1 Posted February 1 (edited) Yes. And sometimes a plate, too. That is a deliberate design choice, reflecting the realities of carrier aviation maintenance. Apparently that happened quite often in real life, to keep the buttons from falling out. And yes, it's randomized. Edited February 1 by Jayhawk1971 2

Ivandrov Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Nothing there is "locked." It's all still useable. The wire is retention for the various buttons to stop them from falling out. 1
Wingmate Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Here is a VF-33 jet with the same wire during desert storm. 4 1
JupiterJoe Posted February 2 Posted February 2 (edited) It's a credit to Heatblur that it's been five/six years since the release of the F-14 and I didn't initially realise that wasn't a screenshot from their simulation. HB hit this thing out of the park at the time. The standard by which all subsequent modules are judged. I've yet to to 'fly' their F-4, but it must be quite something if it's better than the Tomcat. I've been around since the earliest days of home computing/gaming, from the Atari 2600 onwards. I've seen the best from the heyday of Microprose. I've witnessed some spectacular landmarks in simulation and enjoyed many incredible computer games besides, but nothing has brought me more pleasure than HB's Tomcat. For that I will always be grateful. Thank you HB. This post is not really apropos of anything; I just felt like taking the time to give credit where's it's due. EDIT: Uh-oh, never drink and type. RustBelt Posted February 3 Posted February 3 In a perfect world, stuff like this would be in the manual. 1
scommander2 Posted February 4 Posted February 4 My opinion that HB’s mods have not made me disappoint so far regardless F-4 or F-14. VampireNZ Posted February 6 Posted February 6 Hmmm - all my years as an aircraft engineer and we lockwired fasteners so the fasteners didn't vibrate loose and fall out....not to retain the odd button that was lucky enough to be under the path of the lockwire lol. Vampire

This stuff was adhoc in the field, and solutions differed as to how to retain the buttons which is why there is a version with a plate as well.
Morat Posted February 16 Posted February 16 The thing that amazes me is that the filthy cockpit show by Heatblur is realistic! Didn't they have cleaning products in the USN back then? hah.

Ivandrov Posted February 17 Posted February 17 (edited) These things are used and abused. That's what years of that looks like, high altitude sunlight exposure, sea salt, not much you can do with the highest quality paint to stop that from happening, especially since the cosmetics aren't particularly important for interiors in military hardware as a maintenance item. They won't care about it if it's not functionally doing something like preventing corrosion. It just has to work. Given some of the stories of when they were getting the LANTIRN hooked up of how badly corroded the wiring in the jet was, It's actually amazing the cockpit isn't more trashed, it is all still quite useable for me. When pilots say it stinked pee and hydraulics all over I'd guess a bit of dust and scrapped paint is the least of your concern. 2 Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
