What can't we release Cold War Germany Phase 2 without?

Recommended Posts

Hi
We are currently actively working on Cold War Germany phase 2 and decided to find out your wishes in order to find original objects/locations that we can additionally include in the list and without which it is impossible to release phase 2.
Your wishes for phase 1 were very valuable, hints from local residents, guys who served in the service were very informative. Based on them, we adjusted the list: airfields, hangar types and much more were added.
The goal of this topic: to find objects that are most important for the map: they played a significant role in the Cold War, it can be a landmark for navigation (antennas, towers, etc.), quarries without which the territory does not look like itself, a warehouse or a base. Or maybe some landmark without which the city loses its appearance? The idea with the city of Mannheim and “Kalimandscharo” seemed interesting to us.
If you previously wrote wishes, you can duplicate the link to the topic.
Let me remind you that we are looking at the entire Wishlist section, and in this topic we want to collect what you think is necessary to release Phase 2, and based on the responses and likes we will determine what to do first.

I was quite surprised not to find Bonn, the west german capital during the cold war phase already included in phase I of CW Germany. I hope it's included in phase II at least.

Btw: I also do not see the "Hardthöhe" in Bonn, which was - and still is - the location of the german ministry of defense during CW time. It is the german equivalent of the pentagon which I guess was - and still is - a major target for Warshaw Pact forces.

DCS (and this map too) needs map-object-glass-material for rendering .REF 3D models/packages. Something similar to what .EDM models use.

I see that this glass-material is completely missing from the screenshots (and from the current map-object-3D-models on/of other maps),

such as the windshields of the vehicles, the windows of the hangars and control towers etc.

Awesome idea, thanks for your continuous work based on feedback from the community!

Three to four things just from the top of my mind and in no particular order:

1) Hermannsdenmal in Teutoburg Forrest near Detmold

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermannsdenkmal

Spoiler

That antenna in the background may or may not qualify on the timescale.

2) RAFG Harrier roadbase(s) (someone had made a thread about one near Detmold)

3) Communication Towers (not sure if the list is all encompassing, but it's a strter anyway)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Communication_towers_in_Germany

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategorie:Deutsche_Funkturm

Take this one as an example, which is close to Bückeburg (just left of the frame) and Rinteln (just to the right):

@MAESTR0

It's noticeable and highly appreciated that you listen to the community, thank you very much, also for creating this thread and asking!

Things I think shouldn't be left missing in the scope/area of Phase 2:

  1. City of Oldenburg (home to the 11th Mechanized Infantry Division in the 1980s) south of the Jade Bay
    https://www.relikte.com/nds_heer/div11.htm
  2. Oldenburg airbase EDNO, home to JaboG 43 (flew Fiat G.91, Alpha Jet in the 1980s)
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/oldenburg-airbase.html
    https://www.relikte.com/oldb_flgh/index.htm
  3. City of Wilhelmshaven and the very important German Navy base there, home to the German Navy fleet of destroyers and frigates (would make a nice base to fly to from Nordholz Navy airbase that you also planned for Phase 2)
  4. CRC Visselhövede (radar site to guide fighters)
    https://www.relikte.com/nds_radar/index.htm
  5. Itzehoe "Hungriger Wolf" Army airbase (home to German Army Aviation Regiment 6, flew the Huey and the Bo-105)
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/itzehoe-hungriger-wolf.htm
  6. Schleswig-Jagel Navy airbase EDCS, home to German Navy Wing 1 (flew F-104G Starfighter and Tornado)
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/schleswig-jagel.htm
  7. Eggebek Navy airbase EDCG, home to German Navy Wing 2 (flew F-104G Starfighter and Tornado)
  8. City of Kiel (important port and navy base)
  9. Kiel Navy airbase (home to German Navy Wing 5 (flew Westland Sea King)
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/kiel-holtenau-airfield.html
  10. Basepohl GDR army airbase, home of KHG-5 equipped with Mi-24P and Mi-8TB
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/basepohl.htm
  11. ---EDIT--- I forgot Marxwalde/Neuhardenberg airbase, home of JG-8 (was equipped with MiG-21bis, so OUR MiG-21 in DCS)
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/neuhardenberg-marxwalde.htm

Things I'd really like to see, but are not of such a high importance:

  1. Wilhelmshaven-Mariensiel airfield EDWI (in the area of German Navy base Wilhelmshaven, GAF Transalls often used it for practicing STOL and it's close to the approach sector of Wittmund and Jever airbases - we definitely need to talk about those when Phase 3 is due!!!)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JadeWeser_Airport
  2. Rotenburg-Wümme Army airbase EDCR (small army airbase with a flight of Alouette II)
    https://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/rotenburg-wuemme-airfield.html
    https://www.relikte.com/rotenburg/index.htm

The West-German airbases also deserve a slight overhaul. The perimeter walls should be substituted for fences. I think you could also go a little bit easy on the objects standing around and slightly reduce the clutter. The way I remember a GAF airbase, it was always quite tidy. Also, you can remove all of the big, black light masts on the GAF and GAM bases. and then there is the thing with the ground textures. No sand on GAF and GAM bases please. Also no bushes or trees in the flightline areas!

@MAESTR0 you did a great job so far and thank you for all of this and this initiative in advance! It´s very welcome and a right way to achieve customer success and work with feedback, well done!!

3 very good sources, with much information and pictures and stories about the soviet air force in GDR:

Sitemap

The Russian Air Force in East Germany

Sperrgebiet.eu - Bunkers and military installations documented

Mainly it is about realistically depicting the Soviet airfields of the era, with all their specific buildings, facilities, and expansions. Primarily the HAS (AU-11 - AU-16 and also AU-19) with camouflage, realistic (squadron) ammunition depots, GRANITS (maximum 1 per airfield with 1 or 2 gates on each side, accessible from both sides), squadron service buildings, aircraft recovery systems at the end of the runway, and ideally a realistic tower and buildings corresponding to the era and Soviet style with camouflage. (KDP - not these oversized NATO style towers). Please add the specific radar systems for red airfields, radar hills as they are available in Sperenberg for all other bases too and models for PRW-13/17, P-14, P-18, etc., P-37. Add RSP-7, etc.

Also please add the Gate Guard MiG-15 on a pedestal for Damgarten, Wittstock, Merseburg and Zerbst, etc... There were also MiG-21, -23, -17, -19 and Su-7 Gate Guardians at the Soviet bases, maybe you can bring them too.

Please add the SKP (ZiL-130 9MV) for Damgarten and Wittstock etc. on the edges of the runway!

Please make all these models also accessible via the Mission Editor.

There were 3 different types of HAS in GDR, AU-11 - AU-16 varying mainly in size but also in design. DEFINITELY ALL HAD ROLLING DOORS ON TRACKS. Please add the doors, they were never without on active duty AND please add also EXHAUST CHANNELS going outside and OUTSIDE WORKSHOP ROOMS.

Many Red airfield also had the massive exhaust recoil concrete walls Blast walls at the pre flight lanes.

Please add this for immersion and a more realistic gameplay.

Shelters for the personnel, a fighter command post, and camouflaged shelters/bunkers for vehicles. The GRANIT bunker is somewhat too massive and was almost always accessible from both sides.

Some more specific designs rather than the same as on NATO airfields, especially the KDP/towers of the soviets were much more diferrent and old school. They often use WW2 German Luftwaffe infrastructure, equipment und buildings

Good luck, and let me know if I can provide you and the team with sources and material.

As an avid fan of the map, and born and bred Hamburger, here are some things that are absolute no-gos to me, and probably definite "who gives a flying f*ç%" to anyone else. since none of this is phase 2 🙂

  • Bunker Feldstrasse (see here)
  • Köhlbrandbrücke
  • Euler-Hermes Hochhaus (here)
  • Planetarium (here)

Also, this may be an edge case, and it's only an issue for those who parse the 'radio' file: please include western airbase callsigns, using eastern callsigns for airfields with german names (e.g. Allsted) throws a spanner into airfield matching and retrieving frequencies (see here

The Elbe-Seitenkanal is interrupted northeast of Lüneburg, where the Schiffshebewerk (boat lift) would be.null

Please keep up the great work!

2) RAFG Harrier roadbase(s) (someone had made a thread about one near Detmold)

Think, it was me. Actually, I was there during this exercise. Happened on a part of the "Panzerringstraße / Am Bärenbach" at Sennelager. Until today you find the parking slots next to it between the trees. That's why I mentioned Sennelager. Also someone was asking for shooting ranges for tanks etc.

Those Harriers were parked in the now" P "marked area and started from the road. There is also a clip existing, as far as I know.

Hi @MAESTR0, thank you for consulting your community for this feedback, it's greatly appreciated. The following would make the Phase 2 release a success in my opinion:
In addition to what you are already planning on creating for Phase 2 I would like to see...

  • Fixed NLP Adelsheim and more NLPs in general. All of which can be looked up on https://www.mil-airfields.de/index.html
  • Fixed topography of airfields. Currently, all airfields and runways are flat as a board. Pferdsfeld being among the biggest offenders.
  • A GAF fighter airbase
  • More historical SAM site locations ideally with more accurate representation of the individual infrastructure differences (currently you are using two templates per side as far as I can tell)

Looking forward to more updates to this great map!

Just as an aside to this - if generic templates are to be used, please make it accurate to a real site in Germany.

For instance, the S-200 sites currently implemented have a launch battalion too many (no S-200 site in Germany had 3 launch battalions, only 2).

Small addendum, templates should be based on real sites in Germany

As a local resident in the south east corner of former GDR,  please find my wishlist for Phase 2:

airfields:

  • Dresden; ICAO: EDDC. A unit of Antonov An-26 military cargo planes of the GDR air force was located at this base. My dad is a former GDR air force pilot whoe flyed such Antonov. Placing some Antonovs An-26 visible on the airfield in phase 2 would be lovely!
  • Bautzen / Litten; ICAO: EDAB. In the 1980ies a unit of L-39 using for jet fighter education of GDR air force was located at this site
  • Rothenburg; ICAO: EDFR, used for fighter jet education as well, using Mig 21
  • Preschen; ICAO: ETNR, unit Mig 29 of GDR air force located at this site
  • Großenhain; ICAO: EDAK, operated by USSR, nuke warheads were stored at this side in separete shelters called "Granit". in german described as "Sonderwaffenlager"
  • Kamenz; ICAO: EDCM, used for cargo plane education of GDR air force
  • Welzow, ICAO: EDCY, operated by USSR

military installations:

launching sites for mobile nuke missiles operated by USSR in "Taucherwald", located near the city of "Bischofswerda" and at "Königsbrück".  Those weapon system called SS-21 Scaleboard or 9K76 TEMP S looking similiar to the SCUD missilie system and was stored on a truck. Those trucks were placed in shelters in this military sites ready for operating. In case of operating, the would have left there shelters for prepared launching pads placed in the site as well.

North of the city of "Königsbrück" was a training area for army forces of USSR. The above mentioned mobile nukes were located in the north-west corner of this area near a small village called "Röhrsdorf"

civilian sites

  • city of Dresden with it`s distinctive classic buildings, bridges crossing the river "Elbe" and it`s TV-tower
  • transmitter "Wilsdruff" - a distinctive radio broadcasting antenna, about 150m tall, located 15km west of Dresden besides the motorway A4 / E40   -  it was destructed a few years ago.
  • thermal power plants operated by brown coal with it`s distinctive chimneys and cooling towers like "Boxberg", "Schwarze Pumpe", "Jänschwalde" , etc...  In this part of Germany in times of former GDR huge areas were used by brown coal mining  creating a unique landscape. Some sites can be seen currently, like "Welzow" or "Boxberg". The above mentioned airfield "Welzow" is located directly nearby a brown coal mining site.

landmarks:

  • large brown coal mining areas between Bautzen and Berlin as mentioned above -  very distinctive landmarks. Currently the majority of the former coal mining sites are closed and filled up with water creating lakes. But in cold war times the were in service and this areas look like huge digging holes or deserts with no green at all.

I guess most of these would be Phase 3 airfields. Maybe in Phase 2 the following airbases could be included:

- Cottbus (LSK/LV JG-1 with MiG-15, -17, -21; later KHG-3 with Mi-24) - https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/cottbus.htm
- Drewitz (LSK/LV JG-7 with MiG-21; JBG-37 with MiG-17 / MiG-23BN) - https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/drewitz.htm
- Kleinköris (LSK/LV reserve airfield for JG-7) - https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/kleinkoeris.htm
- Alteno (LSK/LV reserve airfield for JG-1) - https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/alteno.htm

And AFAIK still missing from Phase 1:

- Strausberg airbase (LSK/LV VFS-14 with An-2, L-410 etc.) - https://www.mil-airfields.de/germany/strausberg-airfield.html
- Neuhardenberg (Marxwalde) airbase (LSK/LV JG-8 with MiG-21) - https://www.mil-airfields.de/de/neuhardenberg-marxwalde.htm
