Sulman Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 OMG, RIP... Bad times to be a Sukhoi pilot... I wonder if this could be a safety regulation problem for display birds 'cause CFITs usually keep happening eastern bloc birds and airforces...I never heard of a NATO bird striking the ground during public airshows but I newer saw any of them doing such maneuvers at low level above the crowd. At least the safety rules and flight were conducted properly. RIP guys. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Bucic Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Sadness, anger... again... R.I.P. This time it's even worse. I know it has no meaning to those who suffered such a great loss but still... this accident looked mysterious. Despite clearly too low altitude it was far from crowd, plenty of time, flat flight path and yet pilots didn't eject. Shaman Posted August 30, 2009 Author Posted August 30, 2009 (edited) Godspeed and Farewell for the Eternal Duty, All three gone now, but their show will last on and on and on... As they fly towards infinity to find peace within all things thanks to love to what their did for us and all the smiles they brought, dreams and great memories... shown to many of us how it is to have the passion for flying deep withing ones heart. Now with great respect towards their three souls - to The Brave Crew of Two, and to The Machine Spirit, three candles I will lit tonight, and let my thoughts support their families... ['][']['] PS. -fox- Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 Certainly looks like there's a pattern of coming in too low.

mikoyan Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 Very sad... my condolences to their families. Very sad to see my favorite airplane crash again. Here is another video of the accident: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfdk7lFHq1o play attention to the sound at 2:48 and also the smoke of the engines, if I'm not wrong the flanker smokes when the engines are on military power right? and not when they have the afterburner engaged.
Bucic Posted August 31, 2009 Posted August 31, 2009 (edited) if I'm not wrong the flanker smokes when the engines are on military power right? and not when they have the afterburner engaged. The engines can smoke at various operating conditions but you are right that they wouldn't smoke with afterburners engaged. Engines are not my major but from what I've seen they smoke most clearly at changes of regime - during fast increase or decrease of thrust/RPM. The sound suggest that pilot backed the throttle fully back. IMO the Su was flying at no more than 300 kph. At this speed and altitude it wouldn't save them anyway - if they would increase or decrease the thrust. At the top of the last vertical man. they were too low already for anything other than a roll with slight descend and level up. Certainly they were not high enough for spiraling down. Other than that and despite the dangerously low altitude what could save them was at least 100 kph of airspeed more. At ~300 kph they flew Su-27 can fly horizontally with the nose high up (at high Angle of Attack) but the 4th quarter of any loop-like man. at this alt... ~Two seconds they had wouldn't give them this much speed even with efterburners engaged. There were rumors that there were engine failure (combined with the rumor of order to eject given from the tower). The videos show no signs of engine failure to me i.e. there was no abnormal smoke trail, sound nor flash. Another rumor has it that they saved the crowd by pointing the AC further away. Well, they were nowhere near the crowd during the last man. which looked to me like a part of their routine display. The time they had for a successful ejection without attempt to do so is still a mistery to me. Edit: At the time of impact the engines were as quiet as they could be. http://www.onet.tv/nagranie-katastrofy-w-radomiu,5431302,1,klip.html# Edited August 31, 2009 by Bucic F-5E simpit cockpit dimensions and flight controls Kill the Bloom - shader glow mod Poor audio Doppler effect in DCS [bug] Trees - huge performance hit especially up close
