Maybe you guys can clear this up though:

"The throttles cannot be moved through the detents unless the throttles are lifted (unless excessive force is applied), making them a true mechanical stop."

Does that excessive force mean "you could break it, it's not supposed to go beyond the detent without a lift" or that it's designed to hop over it if you slam the throttles full open?

Excessive as in it might break something. And it's the idle detent that that has the mechanical stop, not the burner detent, so it won't be there when you go from idle to max mil power.

Also this:

"There is no electrical response of the throttle axes below the idle detent, and the detents are silent."

Does that mean that beyond idle (which I assume isn't 0 throttle?) they throttle doesn't register an input?

The area beyond the idle detent is past the 0 point on the throttle axis, so pulled against the detent is idle power and pulled past the detent is cutoff.

Yeah, I think the area below the "IDLE" detent could be programmed as a keypress in Thrustmaster Advanced pRogramming Graphical EdiTor. :P

BTW: Don't they know that T.A.R.G.E.T. and H.E.A.R.T. shaped words are unsearchable in browsers? I hope they change that silly naming convention.

Warthog looks great, functions are even better than I hoped them to be. But is it 400 EUR - worthy? That remains to be seen. But at the end I'll still have to trust web reviews, there's very little chance this will come to stores in Slovenia, so I'll have to make my choice without seeing it in person.

That's what had me questioning why I thought it had FF. With FF at that price I think everyone, including myself, would have snapped it up, without...well it better be good :pilotfly:

As for the detents, if the stick doesn't register anything below 0, what's the point? In other words, if Bwaze isn't correct and basically the controller doesn't know that your doing anything beyond commanding 0% thrust it's not really worth doing for a controller is it?

Now if you CAN make it do something, like reverse thrust, or fuel cut off or even eject (just so you can let someone have a go and watch there face when they do it :D) then I can see the point.

This is the difficult thing when it comes to HOTAS, you can't please everyone 100%. For example had it been a force feedback stick the majority of simmers I fly/have flown with over the years, myself included wouldn't have gone anywhere near it.

Well now, given that they appear to be at least liaising with ED for the Warthog, I'd say that either you can map a key press to that throttle region, or maybe DCS:A-10C even supports it out of the box. I mean even the long in the tooth Open Falcon supports idle detent on the throttle axis. Here's hoping I'm right on that one.

Agreed. FF is a gimmick, nothing more IMHO. Not exactly authentic to flight simulation, more 'Hollywood' than realism.

Yes, having read the article on SimHQ, there has obviously been a LOT of thought put into this HOTAS by TM. Can't see why they couldn't have a function assigned to the area below idle. The Cougar could do it.

The more I know about it the more I like it.

Real "lift" detents as with throttles of rea lfighter aircraft, beyond expectation, removable paddle switch to satisfy both A-10C and fighter pilots...backlit buttons with changable color...way to go TM!

edit:

I passed the TM poll as a Cougar owner and I surely hope my answers and given opinions helped Thustmaster in creating such controller!

You have to be able to Crank her up now don't you ;)

All I've heard is September, nothing more definitive than that. As I said previously, both the Warthog and DCS:A-10C are sure to be released in September, just as I head out to Afghan for another 4 months. I'd put money on it.

It looks like a very slick piece of kit, impressive list of features. I'm glad to see Thrustmaster move to a full on GUI for their programming, the layout looks good from the early screenshots and brings their programming suite bang up to date rather than the DOS legacy stuff used on the Cougar.

I'm sure everyone has seen some of the following by now:

Game Nexus - E3 2010: Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog

SimHQ at E3Expo 2010 - Hands-on: Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog Controller

Additionally, here's a post by Teej, one of the Virtual Thunderbird pilots on site in LA at the preview event of the HOTAS Warthog, commenting on several of the asked about features/concerns (from the SimHQ forums):

While this may be true for fixed wing sims, it's quite the opposite in the case of helicopter sims.

Precisly, I still enjoy BS (when I get chance) and I still feel like I am battling the trimmer.

Still it looks to be top quality, so my x52 pro will be getting some abuse until it "breaks" and I "have to buy a new one...oh look at this darling, what do you think of this one? Yes it's more expensive but look what happened to my old one (snap), the plastic just breaks, this is metle".

I may have to drive a steamroller over the metal cougar for that excuse to be valid. "look honey. the nasty old steamroller just reversed over my joystick"

seriously though, the new stick/throttle looks amazing. i have started putting money aside.

the fact that ED and TM are working together gives me nerd-goosebumps

Just had something click in my mind, given that the stick and throttle box each have their own USB connections to your PC, there is no reason that TM couldn't release further Stick and/or throttle modules for any DCS aircraft down the line.

For example, if ED were to model the F-16C TM need only produce the throttle box for that aircraft, you could use the stick from the Warthog, and therefore not have to fork out the cash for a whole new HOTAS setup.

Will be interesting to see what happens down the line.

In this day and age having anything piggy-backed isn't really needed because of the abundance of USB ports on most PCs. The only real issue comes with the older (software)tech the games are running on where they don't like multiple controllers.

TM solves this by having two seperate controllers, but drivers/software that can combine them, and others, into one controller.

I re-iterate my point from before, this does reek of being well thought out and just makes me want to support them. I love being suprised by companies when I think "oh I wished they would have done that, although it's unlikely" and then you find out they have done what you wanted but TM have gone one better and not just catered for me, but for the other bloke who didn't want it as well.

I wonder if they'll let you marry a HOTAS?

you do realise guys that we are going to have to get the MFD's as well?

the TM/ED thing and auto configuration for the warthog hotas will make them very attractive.

so thats; new hotas+MFD's+DCS:A-10 = few days holiday i reckon!

I will tell girlfriend they "came as a set"
