ZQuickSilverZ Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Im just curious. How many of you prefer to do a hover landing and how many of you do a rolling landing (when available)? Also do you try to land on all the wheels at the same during a rolling landing or do you try to touch the back wheels first like a jet? I hear a rolling landing is much better for the helicopter maintenance wise. I guess its less stress on the rotors or something. Myself I prefer a Hover landing. To me its a bit more of a challange. topdog Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 (edited) Hover landing, but I'm pretty aggressive at my approach to it, it's almost like a runway landing until a sharp 180 turn to bleed off speed and remaining low before dropping her down, which I'm sure breaks all sorts of aerial etiquette :) I'm actually not very good at the controlled/stable decline-to-hover approach without gaining mucho altitude or ending up going seriously backwards. My method has nothing to do with ability! I will continue to practice at attempting/doing it the right way though as well, until I get it. Guest Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I usually land using the rolling method, but it always feels a bit awkward. Flaring is ineffective for generating upward vertical lift under a certain airspeed (at least speeds at which I'd be comfortable landing the helicopter) so I wind up just slowing down by pitching the nose up and using the collective to bring myself down.
walker450 Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I land like topdog. I come in like crazy and whip it around to bleed off speed and set it down. :) I can do a nice and slow hover landing but I normally don't have that much patience or desire to do it. I do enjoy performing fast rolling landings when at airfields... Its fun trying to make the helicopter land like a plane. :pilotfly: Speedpad for Inputs | My Simpit | Joystick Damper Mod
TKMR Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Depends how many of my choppers are littering the runway because I was screwing around when taking off. ;) Usually I do a rolling landing at a runway. FARPs or debris-filled runways, I do a hover landing. Sometimes those hover landings don't go very smoothly and I end up pulling a topdog. ;) Lead Admin/Founder of Kilo-Tango Gaming Community

EtherealN Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Usually a hovering landing, on the main gear, whereafter I carefully set the nose gear down and do whatever taxi I have to do to get properly parked. If it's a big airbase I sometimes do a rolling landing just for variation, but it's not common - I tend to go in towards the main and after crossing runway veer off to the parking area. (Not quite according to rules and regs.) For FARPs I tend to call in to get a wind report and swing in towards the FARP against the wind, cross the T and expedite a gentle landing on my pad. joey45 Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Any landing that I can walk away from is a good landing..... Downey Jr. Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 land? well if I make a good landing it usually takes about 2 hours..to land...or 1 minute when face slamming the ground and end up sideways next to the runway
SKUNK Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I do a rolling takeoff/landing when in formation and on a FARP I use the T for touchdown and rearm to not get into collision when someone enters the server or respawns. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "If something hasn't broken on your helicopter, it's about to."
BKLronin Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Usually from a hover position into a autorotation and then ending up with a soft slide forwards. Can´t remember I returned to base this year :P ANd when I return like etheraln but without checking the wind coming slowly forward and descending to the farp than a bit correction and finally touch down as soft as I can. Love the moment after the landing when I let off all the flightcontrols and finally breath again :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
159th_Falcon Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 How do I land? Usually on-fire. :megalol::megalol::megalol::megalol: Ill record a track after work. I always land in the direction that's most convenient to me unless i have noticed strong winds during the mission. On a Hover landing to i tend to side slip a bit to the left so i can look down the left window and keep an eye on the vertical speed indicator at the same time. Hardly perform rolling landings cause i find taxiing to the apron take's to long, thus i hover taxi there instead. :pilotfly::joystick: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)

GGTharos Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 A hover landing requires a lot more power. Aside from being less stressful on the engines and rotors, it is also less safe than a rolling landing. If for any reason you lose an engine during a hover landing, you'll pancake straight down. During a rolling landing you'll continue on because your forward momentum also gives you lift. And you should always touch down with the main gear first, regardless of the type of landing (in this helicopter, that is). Im just curious. MTFDarkEagle Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Depends on the situation :P I can do all the landings. I most enjoy doing a hover landing, but for safety reasons (:P ya really) I do a 80-100 kmh landing Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
ZQuickSilverZ Posted March 3, 2010 Author Posted March 3, 2010 Well DarkWanderer that is impressive. I think an a bomb would be just as effective though lol. Bulletstop Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I can do either, if on a harden runway I will do a rolling, if at a farp I come in as instructed with about 3-8 knots of airspeed and set it on the H. Just depends on the situation. I have to admit I find the percision more satisfing, but the rolling is just fun :) Bullet I7 4790K running at 4390 with a gigabyte board with 16 gigs of ram with an Asus gtx 660-ti and 2 tb of hard drive space on 2 wd hard drives. AlphaOneSix Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I do a 80-100 kmh landing Woah, too fast! (Well, naturally do whatever works for you, but...) The max landing speed for the Ka-50 is 80km/hr. In general, running landings are performed slightly above ETL speed, usually 30-50km/hr.
104th_Crunch Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Land into the wind when you can, Check wind direction with PVI-800.

In general, running landings are performed slightly above ETL speed, usually 30-50km/hr. Correct. I also suggest speed about 30-50km/h for rolling landing. I like that very much! If you can land on runway, do rolling. In other cases do it from hover ;)
