FreeFall Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 300 feet per nautical mile is easier to remember and more correct. Agree. Easy mental calculations as well. Works every time.
BlueRidgeDx Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 I concede that there are more accurate methods, but 3:1 is more frequently used because it's easier "mental math" when you're coming out of the flight levels at Mach .80 on a Pilot's Discretion descent without VNAV doing the work for you. FreeFall Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Both methods are pretty close to each other. I found out that the "300 feet per nautical mile" -method (introduced by Loz in this thread) suits me well. I have used that from the very beginning of my DCS A-10C adventure.
xialoss Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 Hello, I'm currently looking for a modern combat flight simulator, I'm a huge sim fan, I played FS 2002,2004 and FSX at the moment. But now I really wanna try some military action (air to air combat). I have done some research and figured out that Falcon 4 and Lock on Flaming cliffs 2 are probably the best two games at the moment, I also saw DCS A-10c but I'm not a fan of air to ground. So in fact I would like to know which one is better, Falcon 4 or Lock on Flaming cliffs 2 and if any company is planning on making a new combat flight simulator (air to air, such as the F/A-18 or the MIG) in a few months. I would also like to have some informations about the multiplayer, how many people are active on both games and how it works. Thanks for your help! PS: sorry for the poor english
Echo38 Posted August 31, 2012 Posted August 31, 2012 (edited) Hi, Xialoss. Your English is fine--I never would have guessed that it wasn't your first language. I'm afraid you've asked a bit of a tricky question! : ) Which sim/game is better is rather subjective. Falcon BMS vs. Flaming Cliffs ... FC has better graphics and more flyable aircraft, while Falcon has more accurate and detailed avionics and systems modelling. I can't comment on the flight model quality of those two, as it's been many years since I flew either one, and they've both been updated extensively since I flew them. DCS trumps them both. It's got great flight model, great avionics & systems modelling, and great graphics. I hear you about the air-to-air; I'm not much of an air-to-ground man myself. But there is air-to-air in DCS: A-10C, although it isn't as frequently practiced by most people as ground pounding is. The good news is that I am planning on hosting a dedicated air-to-air server for DCS as soon as they release the dedicated server program. In it you will find A-10s and P-51s in missions designed solely for air-to-air combat. I already host it frequently, albeit non-dedicated at present. It's great fun having dogfights with different folks on voice comms. The multiplayer community is small compared to that of some of the less-"hardcore" flying sim-games, but I've never signed onto multiplayer and seen nobody flying. Hey, there's a demo for DCS--it doesn't feature multiplayer, and it only features the Su-25T as flyable, but it'll give you an idea of what DCS and Flaming Cliffs are like. This demo is called DCS World, and it's also the base program for A-10C if you later choose to buy that--so in addition to functioning as the demo, it's also the full game once you buy and "plug in" one of the "modules," such as A-10C or P-51D. So why don't you grab World and see if you like it? The freebie Su-25T isn't quite as highly-detailed in systems modelling as the A-10C, but the flight modelling is still to die for. And there is a quick-start mission by default that pits you in air combat against an A.I.-controlled A-10; it's tricky but I shot him down after a few failed attempts (granted, I had prior experience with old Lock On: Modern Air Combat). WildBillKelsoe Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 CCRP/CCIP windshield wiper effect and CBU-87/97 release and windage effects... Hello again, after reading the wind correction method by Dynamo (and I gotta say this is pretty much the stuff I like), I tried implementing it in DCS 1.1.1.1 Now the thing is, I get wind data from ATC during startup, wind data from JTAC (when he decides to speak), and wind data from the mission briefing screen under sea level, 2000 and 8000 meters. I'm supposed to have 7 slots to input wind magnitude and direction, as well as temperature in ° Celsius which is also in the mission briefing. The problem is, I don't know if the 2000 meters should be typed in as 2 or 20 or 02. And according to manual, the units are in feet so it should be 6562 for 2000 meters (or 06/65 or ??) as well as 8000 meters or feet (26247 feet or 26 or 02 or??). That is one part of the problem. The other part is in the wiper effect caused by roll and attempting to correct it with rudder input and yaw trimming. Constantly now, partly because of TGP on the right wing, I get the right roll effect on takeoff, during gun runs, and during bombing. What is the order of correct trimming? Aileron/Elevator/Yaw Yaw/Elevator/Aileron .... ... .. etc?? Many times now, I want to also clear the A-10C user created loadouts, and reset them to default (box) loadouts. Is it possible? What should I delete? Thanks in advance and please be patient. AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Echo38 Posted September 1, 2012 Posted September 1, 2012 There's no correct order. Trim as you see fit, until the aircraft stays where you want it.
RobertB Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I haven't played A-10C in quite some time, and have forgotten my username and password for multiplayer. I entered what I believed they were, but nothing worked, so I tried to register again, using new information, and, of course, it said my serial number was already associated with another account. So, I initiated a ticket, # 16044, and am awaiting a reply. I've had issues with other platforms/games, and received a reply within 24 hours. I'm new to this forum, and am looking forward to any assistance I can get. Thanks! P.S. I also tried to send the password to see if that would help, I typed in every email I know, and nothing was ever sent to them.

Cause my friends really want me to join them. This will have to be fixed by an ED employee since it will require tracking down your key and crossing it back to the account it is registered with. Hopefully, they have some sort of reverse lookup to handle such things. With all due respect, keeping some sort of written record of these kinds of things might be useful. Echo38 Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 Can anyone explain what are the controls behind the stall warning volume knobs, on the rear-left side of the cockpit? The manual doesn't have any information on them at all, as far as I can tell, but they are clickable.

Mike Busutil Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I read the air brakes on the A-10 are limited to 80% in flight and will only go to max with weight on wheels.... Is this true? Wheel brake is used only in emergencies or when taxiing. Seems crew chiefs don't like burnt out brakes :D Just hit the air brake again after nose wheel touch down... Echo38 Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Just hit the air brake again after nose wheel touch down... Does it require weight on all three wheels, or just the mains? From what you say, I gather it must be all three. In that case, and if the main wheels are on the ground, is it more effective to bleed speed by holding the nose up for aerodynamic braking, or by forcing the nosewheel down so that the spoilers can be fully deployed?
BlueRidgeDx Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 The WOW switch is on the main gear, so you can get the boards out before the nosewheel is down. Nonetheless, the most effective braking technique in the A-10 is a 3-point attitude with 100% speedbrakes and maximum braking*. Aerobraking isn't something commonly done in the A-10. *You should not need maximum braking. In fact on most runways, you won't need to touch the brakes at all until the very end of the rollout when you turn off the runway. "They've got us surrounded again - those poor bastards!" - Lt. Col.
