I was hoping to make it over to the lakes and get a final few photo's of them low level but the 5" of snow has stopped that :(

Looks like this will be the only photo I have of one. Yes it's a harrier, you just have to squint! It was a two ship which flew straight over the hill I was on and dropped down over the reservoir

If all that is said is true, Argentina can start to sharpen their teeth again.

I wonder how UK will defend the Falklands with tornadoes, helicopters and empty carriers.

Argentina is still on an awkward political situation, and a divert on the economical problem to take back some "legitime" country asset is always seems to work.

Its really a shame to see the harrier going down in such unhonored way as the F14 went. It s still pain me to see IMHO the most sexy military aircraft be eaten like a leaf by some kind of weird insect.

I really wich DCS could mod the harrier. It deserve it in the same sense the K-50 is a unique project, a wonder of its time.

The Falklands will be defended by a group of Typhoons that are stationed on the Falklands. IMO Argentina's military is not as good now as it was then.

Still, some new genetic material might be welcome in the falklands. The people there are seriously inbred to the point its not even funny anymore. :D

Well argentinian army wasnt much of anything in that time either.. you never know.

ITOH people are less prone to fall for it.

The Royal Navy still floats strong. The RAF has Eurofighter Typhoons. The Argies have a dozen or so Mirage III's and Mirage subtypes and Super Etendards. And small numbers of older strike aircraft. Honestly. They are nothing. Its been a case of decommmissioning of Navy without replacement.

I heard a very interesting story from a very senior person from the Harrier community last Thursday. The UK MoD had advised the PM that the Tornados and not the Harriers should be decommissioned.

It is alleged that the night before the SDR announcement, three senior RAF officers visited the PM and got him to ignore the advice from the MoD.

So next day, the MoD was as surprised as everyone else at the announcement that the Harriers were to be decommissioned.

If there is any truth in this, has anyone any idea who these officers were, and their motivation?

Yes - a final fly past was made today. Low cloud meant that the full flypast could not be done. Video of yesterday's practice:-

Do you mean all Harrier operations in the UK have ceased? Now already? Man, what a sudden death.

Can you imagine what it took to build this capability? And than they kill it off in a snap, just like that?

Anyway the brave pilots and servicemen and women of the Harrier community deserve a salute.

I think they were suppose to be flying over Lincoln cathedral?

The sound of the four of them winding down together was pretty eerie

We still managed to make plenty of noise today with a bit of tie down action ;)

reading for the F35 , harrier had its day.

Nice that you are ready for F-35, unfortunately F-35 is not ready for you: it will take another 10 years before UK has again this naval strike capability.

This means that those who are really up to the task, the pilots, engineers and servicemen/women and families of the Harrier community, will be long gone to other horizons by then.

It will be other people who will have to learn everything from scratch. Ten years is a long time, who knows what will happen in between. The only reality now is that the capability is lost.
