BTW, will personalised skins be automatically visible online, is it a server setting or is it just for one self?

Glad it is helping out, I didn't go into detail with Photoshop cause I'm still learning the program. Good thing i found lots of YouTube videos and other tutorials on the web!

You can see them online as long as who you're flying with has them installed to, it's strictly client side. For example our virtual squadron has a downloads section and I upload the latest versions weekly for my fellow squadron pilots so they can download and install them. We have a basic range mission we use for training right now and each individualized aircraft is loaded, the pilot looks for their callsign and jumps into that jet. We also have 6 jets with no name for new pilots to jump into until they complete their initial flight checks (our LIFT requirements). Once they finish those I make a custom skin based on their choice of clean or dirty texture, requested nose art, and tail number.

Another option is GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program): http://www.gimp.org/

Slightly different interface compared to PhotoShop, but it's free software in both senses. :)

That's a really cool system... I wish I had the time to fly frequently online. I usually get a few hours in through the week, but I doubt I could fit a regular online rendevous with a squadron in my schedule.

I can also recommend GIMP it´s pretty powerful and almost on the level of Photoshop.

Same here, i did all my mod work last year with GIMP, very good program :)

Here is my WIP...learning my way around photoshop tonight. Finally! Looking forward to getting into this skinning thing.

Big Accomplishments:

-Got MARPAT to show up on helmet (still need to tweak)

-Got my layered image to still show some panel lines (that was a deal-breaker for me)

*Could NOT have done this if it wasn't for that great tutorial; thanks again!

Anyone know how to replace the pilot texture? What entry do you make in the LUA?

There are a number of ways to get the underlying skin texture to show through. Which one you use depends on the sort of decal you are using and where it is going.

A simple way to get things pointing in the right direction is to simply set the blending mode of the decal to 'Multiply' and reduce opacity to about 80% or so. This will let things through from underneath, but it also can end up changing the colours of the decal depending on what it is.

I took 5 minutes to throw together a quick guide. With the rivet layer what you basically are doing is replacing most of the grey paint with white. When using Multiply blending it ignores white and thus lets the underlying texture to show through.

Sorry it is rushed, I have a heap of work to plow through and couldn't spend much time on it.

I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

Just to clarify a little, when making your rivet texture it may pay to do this in a seperate project and then just import the resulting flattened white rivet skins into your main project when it is ready. I typically do everything in the same project using various masking techniques, but it takes a bit of time to learn how to do this and is somewhat outside the scope of trying to bang together a few skins for fun.

I didn't find a way to edit the .lua, I just edited the HGU55.bmp to skin the pilots helmet. I made a backup of original before replacing, but for now its my MARPAT helmet all the time.

Hope no one minds this question. I've had a wonderful skin made for me by another member. Will post a screen or two of the jet soon, but I cannot get it to be accedpted into the area where a new skin would go. I've spent hours trying and I beleive the problem is on my end. I am using winrar to unzip the folder or file but the main thing is the message (s) i get when trying to get it added to the proper place. Any ideas? A screenshot is attached. I do have it set up so I should have admin rights or whatever it is called. Thank you for taking a look.

First of all use notepad++ when editing LUA. There is less likely to be bugs introduced. The failure to save is just Windows thinking it knows better than you. I'm guessing you are using Windows7 or Vista? Either turn off UAC or just save the LUA to desktop and then drag it from there into the folder.

A good rule of thumb is never overwrite original content made by ED; make new stuff so if you make a big mistake then it won't break anything. As always, backup your A-10.zip and the liveries folder before editing.

Have fun with it. :)

Anyone have an idea about this? Being i already posted the screenshot (page 7 in my orginal post) it would not allow me to do it again. Please check my other post for that picture. Thanks
