Hey guys,

Was just flying some sorties the other day and wondered why I cant see any of the tracer rounds from the Avenger cannon.

Does anybody know why this is?

Possibly due to no tracer rounds or something that may be fixed in a up and coming patch?

Cheers

GAU-8 doesn't have tracer rounds as far as I'm aware.

Every fourth in a mix is an incendiary is it not? So it should show up. Perhaps it's got something to do with the speed? But, your right. I never see anything till it hits the ground.

I think that even if the incendiary rounds would have tracer-like attributes, it would be nearly impossible to spot anyway at +1.000 m/s velocity.

The TP rounds are tracers (white smoke instead of magnesium[?])

As far as I know, tracers (in the sense that you mean) haven't been used since the early testing phase with the A-10. Footage is around confirming this.

I can also confirm that some of the ammunition companies that handle the air force contracts offer a 30x173mm tracer round (that is not the standard PGU-15TP round).

I guess they are so obscure that it wasn't worth modeling (although it'd be pretty darn cool :))

The PGU-13/B 30mm x 173 HEI round contains a single Incendiary Pellet that ignites upon Impact. As such, it does not have a 'Tracer' effect. Current development sees the removal of the Incendiary Pellet in favour of Explosives incorporating Incendiary qualities as per the following diagrams:

Nice post.

What's interesting to me is that standard TP rounds also lack a cavity for a tracer element. (at least according to the diagrams one can find online)

I have a few PGU-15 lying around, but I've never had the beans to pull the projo from the case (those things aren't cheap!)

I'm wondering if the tracer effect we see in sim is modeling vapor trails, or an old-school "smoke" tracer.

I guess meteoroids fall speed is lower then ;)

I'm sure I've seen tracers from A-10. Is it that they used tracers for some extraordinary event e.g. firing practice range ex.?

Not true, if you look at it from the shooter's perspective, the round hardly seems to move at all. During my time in the military i have been present at a lot of 20mm cannon live fire exercises, and if your view axis is not orthogonal to the flight path, you can see them just fine, even during daytime.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Good point, thanks for the info

I suppose though, considering the short burst fire, PAC (if used) and HUD sight, tracers would have very little added value though, no?

i have seen an A-10 tgp footage from a gun run, and the rounds could be seen, they weren't tracers, but the vapour trails were visible

i tried to find the clip, but i have no clue where i saw it..

Edit: well i found one clip.. at the time of 0:40 you can see it pretty well..

I MUST WARN YOU FIRST.. the clip contains some mildly graphic footage, and the site contains some very graphic footage from different wars so if you are like me and dont like to see stuff like that.. dont go wandering around the site :D

My Uncle flew the A-10. He told me one of the coolest things was seeing the vapor trails from the 30mm going down range. It would be awesome if it were possible to add that detail in the sim.
