BoneSaw Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 So I get everything fired up and all systems are go. Taxi out, so proud I finally got this thing working the way it should. Power up ... rotate BANG! My 11 year old daughter who was watching me fly said "What was that?" I said "Oh hell I don't know, but that was probably not a good noise." Everything is still working no indication on the idiot panel master caution is not screaming and my Mavs have aligned so I guess we're good. Get about half way to the IP and I start thinking to myself, man it sure is noisy. Look around the cockpit hey WTF where's my canopy? Hit F2 sure enough no canopy. Guess I must have skipped that part of the checklist. Daughter says "Well that was dumb daddy". Thanks sweety I love you too. Ug tenth time will be the charm, I just know it. 2

PlainSight Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 Do A10 pilots always close their canopy just before take-off? Cos i close it when i'm flipping stuff in that area of the cockpit. power, oxy, lights, air, canopy, it's all there. [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

macedk Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 With the canopy up, it is unsafe to eject. So if you had a fire on taxi or start-up its dangerous...that's right!.....ice ..ehh wait... PlainSight Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 The only thing i forgot several times was the pitot heat switch. It says you should flip it just before take-off... [SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Thanks sweety I love you too. :megalol: Lovly story, hehe. You may want to consider letting your daughter take off for you. The mind is like a parachute. I saw them taxing a lot with them open when I was in Alaska, but only in the summertime :smilewink: i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
rud Posted June 25, 2011 Posted June 25, 2011 I always close mine just before taking off. I've learned to check for the canopy unlocked light when I do my final annunciator panel, standby adi, and pitot heat check. I've never lost my canopy on take off yet. Never ever ever. Well, not more than twice.
dbeaty Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I hate to admit it but you're not alone there, I've done this too! I didn't do that, but I spent 20 minutes in start up only to taxi out, run off the runway to the right (it pulls that way) with Steering Engaged and flip the aircraft trying to recover. Spectre_USA Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I did it publicly, during the LOMAC beta. Wags, Stormin', I and someone else went up on a 4 shipper. Laid waste, parked close for the post landing mugs shot, and Wags posted it up. Someone comments in the thread, "What happened to the one guys canopy?"
