Moggster Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Sorry about this but I'm having a little bother with taxying. In the manual it states that I should be taxying at a speed between 15 and 25 knots. Unfortunately I cannot see where my ground speed is displayed. It doesn't appear on the HUD and the standby ASI is not very good at low speeds. Where should I be looking or is there something I'm missing during the startup procedure? 'Any new pilot is still dangerous. They know just enough to get themselves in trouble. sobek Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 You can switch your CDU into position mode and switch the speed indicator on that page to GS (ground speed). It will show you a very precise ground speed calculation based on EGI data. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
docehrenhoefer Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Normally it´s triple the speed of my grandfather in his wheelchair downhill... ;) No, seriously: it´s kind of a look and feel. 50 knots is rather fast, so if you go at a calm speed and you can steer the plane calmly, than everything is ok.
jaykinch Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 take it nice and slowly of before u know it u'll pop ya tyres or end up in the grass lol

I like how it displays the same information on the right MFD...saves me having to look down all the time. Thanks for the help guys. 'Any new pilot is still dangerous. Irregular programming Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 If you are using more than 2 wheels while taking corners you are taxing too slow.

effte Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 The ASI won't register the low speeds used for taxying. Fortunately, the aircraft is equipped with an Advanced Taxi Power Setting Synchroniser (ATPSS) device. This gives the pilot visual feedback on the power setting used and and the resulting speed trends. It is easy to miss at first, but if you look closely you can see it above the lower cockpit frame. Vitesse2l Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 Yah I been using ATPSS for a while now. Discovered it soon after installing and using it most every flight. Actually it's also applicable following VSI positive indication.
effte Posted August 4, 2011 Posted August 4, 2011 The ATPSS can also be used for detecting traffic and as a backup attitude indicator. Under good conditions, it can even be used to locate ground targets! Pretty versatile, and draws little power. ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.

Frostiken Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Also if you actuate the switch on the right side of the cockpit, it can supplement the lack of ECS control to the cockpit on the ground. Most A-10 pilots use this feature until takeoff. ... okay this is getting dumb :p [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

CEPEGA Posted August 5, 2011 Posted August 5, 2011 Hey guys, thanks for the hint with the groundspeed display. BluesmanSF Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 I have also noticed that you can disconnect the ATPSS from the center block and have it with you (although weighing around 85kg, it's surprisingly light and almost carries itself), for example, to a local bar after succesful sortie. At least some folks are quite fond of telling everyone, especially to women, about their ATPSS's. But usually nothing good comes from that. :P And I have found no use of keeping the ATPSS in a car, just slows you down. 6S_Blues
