Really? I would think that if you're going to release a map, then everything that's supposed to be on it is on it.

St George airfield, Laughlin, etc... There is myriad of airstrip/airfields around.

I hope those will be modeled and functional, with ILS, lighting, VOR/TACAN and all the bells and whistles.

EDIT: the topic is already discussed here: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=80468&page=673

Are there/will there be more airfields than just those 3 close together? I have no idea what else is there in real life

Want an idea of the number of airfield, airport, airstrips, heliports...?

Follow the white rabbit.

Each red dot is a place to land/take-off.

EDIT: Here is another map (already posted in this thread)

Something tells me they will not be modeled. Maybe I am wrong, that would be a happy surprise! The good news is, the world is no longer flat, so proper navigation can be done. Also maps can get much bigger than this. Personally, I don't care if they do anything with the civil airfields, as long as the community is given the tools to add them in later. They are very necessary, but not at the cost of any further map delay. ;-)

Thanks Cedaway, for locating those posts, but I'm afraid they have become irrelevant. One is based on a very old Alpha version of Nevada, the other links to a Google map that is far from accurate. I spotted 3-4 missing airfields right away.

I don't think they'll be modeled. I just got an email with a response to this thread from Wags, saying it'll just be the 3 airports:

"Correct, only Nellis, Groom Lake and Creech will be included in this map and

this will not change."

It was removed for some reason though..

Hopefully, like some people have stated, there will be tools available for people to "mod" in some other airports.

I think he removed it because he updated his announcement post... but that is the case.

Hmm, Well this map has a lot of potential. It also has the ability to get boring really quickly. I hope for SDK tools soon after edge release, because the quality is in the details. As pilots, and general aircraft fanatics, the "missing" scenery is very much a necessary detail.

I highly doubt you will be able to adjust purchased maps without the source files. So not sure what good the tools will do anyone without access to the NTTR source files... but thats just an assumption.

Very much WIP, things like view distance might not be tweaked yet, so textures dont load at right distances or what have you... too early to stress it...

Nice , then it will look great :joystick:

Well you don't really need source files, because reality is all the source you need! lol If objects can be added to a map, then an airport can be added. It will just have to be adjusted to fit. The part that would come from E.D. is the ability to add the signals like ILS, and VOR's etc. If one gets to pondering about the demographic of DCS Users, the vast majority want realism. As real as it can possibly be. A Simulation of Reality. Reality dictates that there is more to Tactical Training then just Red Flag type missions. Shared airspace IS, and should be, a major factor in the success of this map. With that stated, I'm sure it won't be long before someone comes out with a mod to put the real names back on the buildings...... :-)

Try to manipulate any of the 3d assets in edm format.

Have fun.

I have not tried as of yet. I do recognize that there are a lot of very talented artists here, that probably would have done just that by now. So I do not argue with your depth of knowledge. There is a way though. We just have to think outside of the box, and find it! It is just some bits of electricity right? The struggle is with our own minds. The WILL to do more is a powerful tool......

I don't know anything about modding but I thought the SDK was supposed to allow this sort of thing, wasn't it?

The tools are only half of it, it doesnt make you capable of producing a map magically... still need some skills...

Good experience in 3DS Max, good textures artists, making maps in FSX is good (proof that you can show), and access to good DTED and textures

Perhaps research a little more before you assume... if the only tool you have is WILL, you wont be making many maps or anything else...

Ofcourse, I just meant that some experienced modders would be able to add things, such as airports, to existing maps with the SDK, or does the SDK only allow for new maps to be made?

SDK would only be for creation of new maps, unless you entered into some agreement with ED for updating their maps, I doubt you would get their source files.

If the backend stays even remotely similar in 2.0 All the tower and nav systems for each airbase are LUA scripted, I added Nellis' tower to The old beta terrain w/ no problems.

that's enough :)

i think all we know an experienced modder who is capable (to all you mentioned) and maybe interested in this job/update as well ;)

Sir Sith,

I head your advice, and will designate the next 2 years to doing "A little Research." What programs do you advise I learn to properly implement an entire region in DCS world? I suppose learning a language is probably good as well? I'm thinking C++ and LUA? This is a serious question. I want to become a map developer for DCS. I don't care about developing the aircraft.....I fly the aircraft. I want to develop maps, missions, and stories.
