Ranger79 Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 (edited) Hey guys, Quick clip, I think a tank shot me out of the air with a round from his main turret, lucky shot I guess... EDIT: Just looked at the encylcopedia on the T-72B, - 125 mm 2A64M gun, thats the round that took me out, no chance of survival when that hit. EtherealN Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 This is all correct. There is nothing in principle that makes it impossible to use a tank gun in an anti-air role. (Indeed, AFAIK most tank crews do train for this as well.) If you get a laser warning while having tanks nearby, take this extremely seriously - they're ranging you and a shell is about to be incoming. WynnTTr Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Yeah tank crews train to take out helicopters - and they're more proficient at it than most people think. I also remember watching a doco about a UK Army Lynx duelling it out with an Iraqi tank. Should be easy you think - a modern army's attack chopper v outdated tank. Nope. The tank commander was especially good and with every shot he was getting closer and closer to hitting the Lynx. The battle took some time as well, it wasn't over quickly. I'll have to try and find that again, it was an interesting watch.

Speed Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 It looks like Russian MBTs are finally utilizing their gun-fired ATGMs in DCS- beware, I think they are targetting helos too. That would certainly explain how I got shot down from 4.5 km away while in a minimum 60 km/h lateral motion against a T-80 the other night. 213 Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 a howitzer's a type of artillery. tanks only have guns.
jib Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Yes you where being lazed and you carried on flying towards them (when I get lazed I run and hide) they normaly won't hit you when you are flying at right angles to them but you where very close a too slow. If you do get in that close and you are being lazed turn and brake away at the maximun speed you can without losing your rotors. M60A3 gunner here. perhaps things changed dramatically in past 15 years, but we had minimal training in that regard because you really can't. our available gunnery simulator would be useless for that task and spending several UAVs for target practice per gunner is to expensive to be realistic. i probably could hit a helo if it was in range (say 2.5-3.5Km) and not moving to much, but i seriously doubt that RL pilot will give a tank such opportunity. i think tanks with target following capability (ie israeli merakvas starting with mark III BAZ ) will have much better luck. with that, those barrel launched ATGMs are indeed game changers. Dejjvid Posted November 14, 2011 Posted November 14, 2011 Modern tanks won't have any problems at all to hit a slow moving heli from 1km+.
