Sad but true. I'm sure the entire industry's quality has suffered because of this. Both hardcore sims and mainstream games.

 

But then again, what people think is important is up to their preferences, and I'm in the minority that thinks that graphics are low on the priority list after a certain threshold.

I agree with that, but I wouldn't say that the current terrain has reached that threshold yet (obviously, DCS World looks more acceptable than FC2/older DCS level). Fortunately, there's the new engine..

Young or old, how can anyone not derive some kind of enjoyment from piloting a Virtual Fighter Jet with flames shooting from your a$$ while doing so, all the while flinging explosive cabers (telephone poles for the rest of you) at one another in an attempt to exterminate the opposition. Cm'on, this is your best game of Cowboys and Indians on steroids!

 

For all those waiting for DCS Fighter Jet prior to commencing your fast-jet journey, be warned: You WILL spend the first months, or heaven forbid, years, being target drones for the old-timers. Do not make the mistake of assuming that lack of clickable cockpit et al dumbs down FC3. Insofar as A2A combat doctrine and fast-jet flight dynamics is concerned, it is about as good as it gets at present. Granted, it will no doubt get better with DCS in certain aspects, but not enough to ensure that FC3 can be overlooked if it is indeed your intention to become the next 'Maverick'. Spare a thought for us Toadies: It's absolute misery on a server without top-cover, or even worse, being surrounded by flying bulls-eyes.

 

Be Warned - Ignoring FC3 will have the servers ringing with the B.O.H.I.C.A. Warcry...........:megalol:

Being torn here. I can use better visuals provided by the DCS environment. But I only fly Su27. I will continue to do the same in foreseeable future, since I am still at the learning stage. For the same reason, it is difficult for me to appreciate the AFM for the missiles. When I've advanced enough, I expect to see DCS module Su27 already, which will give me a few years at least to familiarize myself with the bird.

 

Plus I already have the DCS A10C. That's something to be learnt meanwhile.

 

There. I've answered my own question. FC3 is not for me. Visuals is not so important after all...

Yes but when on sale. IMO the $40 price tag is too steep for a new F-15 3D model, cockpit, and some other small changes. Had all the other aircraft been given the same treatment the F-15 has gotten then I would buy it on day one. I am also annoyed that I have to upgrade Black Shark as from my understanding there where no changes from BS1 to BS2 for the actual aircraft.

I miss the days of Air Warrior, Warbirds and Aces High of an open server, always on, always a fight, 24/7, and many people playing all at once.

FC3 will not "support" BS1. FC3 is a DCS World module and is compatible with everything that is also part of DCS World - BS2, A-10C, P-51D, CA.

 

Installation of the modules is extremely simple:

1 - Install DCS World.

2 - Install the module(s) you want and have a licence for.

 

In #2, note that if you have BS2 Upgrade, you need to have BS1 installed during BS2 module install, and you just like before you need to make sure you're installing the Upgrade version of the module.

What a server requires for a user to be able to log into it is 100% up to the administrator of said server. This is not something that is controlled by ED through a product decision. All ED does is give everyone the option of running a server, and if the customer elects to do so, ED provides the option of keeping the server "open" or locking it with a password. The latter is commonly used for people that simply want to fly with their friends or squadron.

PC Gaming is still going strong, what has happened is that it's growth has been very small while the console growth has been explosive. (Easier to work with for both consumer and developer.)

Why? FC2 has more open servers, not locked.

 

My Black Shark is in an independent Directory titled: GAMES, sub-directory titled Ka-50 Black Shark. The bulk of the sub-directory is for BS1, while BS2 has its own Folder and sub-folders. It works. BS1 runs in FC2. BS2 runs in DCS, pre-World. Do I simply add BS2 for World within my Ka-50 Black Shark sub-directory? I do not want to mess up my setup so nothing works, which is probably being too pessimistic.

Well, Erichvon, there's a couple things:

 

1) If you're not using DCS World, then the reason why you're having issues finding servers is quite possibly that you're not using DCS World, which is what everyone (except FC2) is using for their most up-to-date. So the disappearance of open servers for BS2 might very well be caused specifically by you not using World.

 

2) You do not "add" World modules to your existing, pre-world installs. All you do is the following:

 

A) Download and install DCS World.

B) Download and install Modules for the products you have.

 

In B, these modules end up in DCS World, and gives you access to that aircraft in there. As mentioned, there are modules for BS2, A-10C, P-51D, CA and (soon™) FC3. Your old stand-alone installs are not modules; they are separate installs whereas what World does is bring everything into the same program on your computer.

 

The location on your hard drive of the previous standalones is irrelevant to World, mixing and matching will destroy both. The full procedure is therefore as indicated above.

 

To perhaps put it in a more explicit fasion: DCS World does not go into your pre-existing standalones. DCS World replaces them. All of them. With one install. (Well, all of them that there are modules for, as listed above.)

 

Objective is therefore that instead of having:

 

1x BS1

1x FC2

1x BS2

1x A-10C

(etc, with lots of file commonality between them wasting your hard drive space)

 

you will have

 

1x DCS World

...and any aircraft you have purchased (such as BS2 etcetera) will be flown from within there through installing the relevant module.
