GGTharos Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 You are missing the point. Flight sims are not MMOs. They do not even compare in terms of population, and likely never will as they don't usually appeal to the type of personality that plays those games. 'Free to play' is not a sustainable business strategy; there's no micro-transactions for content in DCS (and probably won't be, I imagine, but who knows) and there's no advertising. You are missing the point. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
JaseGill Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I play MMO's (SWTOR and World of Tanks) and also fly a lot of simulations (though DCS will be taking over a lot with all the new stuff coming). So it does attract SOME of that trade. SOME is the relevant word though, and I'm glad its so. Does everyone want the random, general gamers in on DCS? I don't think so. All of the MMO forums are spammed, full of kids who want what they want and not what the overall community wants and will just flame anyone who doesn't agree with their point of view. I'd rather DCS stayed as is, populated by more mature (in outlook, not necessarily age) players who are at heart Simulation lovers. Can you imagine the "Why do I always miss from 20 miles out using a Humvee 50 cal?" questions ED, and by association we via the forums, would have to put up with. I'd rather DCS stays as is. A reference Sim with a mature, educated audience. Anything less would drive away the DCS core audience I think. I don't see many MMO users who have the desire to play Star Trek Online in a home built switch filled Enterprise Bridge Pit do you ;) That's what sets Sim and other Game users apart. We see the reality of 100 switch actions to startup an A10C realistically the challenge, not the pretty explosions and thrill of the easy kill. So it does attract SOME of that trade. That's why I said 'usually'. I know a couple of people who are very good at flight sims and play MMO's. We see the reality of 100 switch actions to startup an A10C realistically the challenge, not the pretty explosions and thrill of the easy kill. You're seeing the wrong challenge then ;) Starting up a machine is just that - starting up a machine. The real challenge is in flying the machine. Shut off all the toys, the HuD, and learn to fly the thing. You can do the same with FC level aircraft. After that comes the challenge of making decisions real-time in the battlefield. Sometimes it's pretty easy, other times it'll be hectic. It all depends. 3instein Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 CA is not for sale, at the moment. You can only PRE-ORDER at this time. It is, in fact, an open-beta. Everyone playing now it PLAY TESTING, helping (hopefully) ED work through all the little issues, see what works and what doesn't. And as someone else posted, I've spend a lot of time these last 2 days playing it. Lot's of fun. PeterP Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 (edited) .... I was typing about around 300 words to explain why it isnt good to add a Free-2-play MP option... Know what ?!... I deleted it again because I thought that some maybe miss the point... (and it is BTW already written down in this thread..) So here is the shortened version: Make Combined Arms free to play < NO WAY!!! Edit: If some of you are bothered of this kind of reply I made: Sorry ! - just try not to answer on it! ED Team NineLine Posted July 13, 2012 ED Team Posted July 13, 2012 If the goal of CA is to draw people in to buy other modules then yes I could see making it free to play. If the goal of CA is to make the most complete digital battlefield experience then no way should it be free to play, it should continue to develop and grow. As a side note, it would be nice to see a CA road map as in where they want to take it, what they have planned and what we might expect out of it in the future as far as features, options etc... winz Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 UMMM...ever hear of a little game called "Rise of Flight"????...seems like a pretty successful business model to me. You mean that game with free core, with few free planes, and payware addon planes. Sounds familiar to the model ED is adopting with DCS world. also note, that WWI planes are much much more simplier then modern planes, so they are able to produce several new-ones a year, with a lower pricetag. The added complexity in modern planes prevents this. The Valley A-10C Version Revanche for FC 3

The added complexity in modern planes prevents this. That doesn't matter. Nobody said the aircraft would be free. If they make interior and super real tanks that is a different story. But I highly doubt CA will be released with that. Maybe in 2-3 years if they are planning to make it more advanced.
ED Team NineLine Posted July 13, 2012 ED Team Posted July 13, 2012 So why does it work for Rise of Flight? Probably because the development time on a WWI Rise of Flight plane doesnt compare to that of a DCS plane, income would come in much much slower... I guess ED could charge for ordnance used :D Forum Rules • My YouTube • My Discord - NineLine#0440• **How to Report a Bug**
GGTharos Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Because Rise of Flight isn't doing modern air combat simulation, and a host of other reasons, some of which you may deduce by yourself, others not so much. One company is not like the other, and neither are their business models. So why does it work for Rise of Flight? Sierra99 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Why? I'd love to sit here and pick this post apart bit by bit... But I'm too busy laughing at you and pitying your parents... Is there anything else we can get you while were giving things away? How about a shiny new gaming computer! I bet your eMachine struggles a bit when loading CA doesn't it. We'll just contact Dell and have them ship you a nice Alienware gaming rig right over. What else can we do for you? Are you comfy? Want some cheesy poofs? Seriously, what kind of short circuit do you have in your head to make a post Suggesting / Demanding ED/DCS should give away their product FOR FREE? Its obvious you have no clue what kind of time, work, and DEDICATION it takes to produce a video game of this caliber. Here's a thought. If $30.00 truly prevents someone from playing CA... I DON'T WANT THEM PLAYING CA! That will cut way down on the time the moderators spend fielding emails from bong jugglers like you complaining "My eMachine with 32 megs of ram and a vga video card wont run CA and it's ED's fault" posts. Another little tip... quit comparing CA to Arma 2, Steel Best Pro and Battlefield...If the ADHD crowd doesn't find CA stimulating enough...fine go play those other games...what are ya doing here? I dont care but... Frankly I'm sick of hearing about them. The PEOPLE who work at Eagle Dynamics are there because its their JOB... They might LIKE working there... but they they don't do it for entertainment, they do it to earn a paycheck and take care of their families. To come in here whining about the price and imply their product is only good enough to give away is selfish and absolutely disrespectful.
