MudRat02 Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I am reading a great book on the Iraq War. Title: Warthog Author: William L. Smallwood 30 Customer Reviews with 4 and 1/2 stars. Thud Ridge is next. I am retired and enjoy reading these books from those who were there. Anyone have others that they would suggest are good reads I would appreciate it. I quite enjoyed "100 Missions North" by Ken Bell, a great book from a Thunderchief pilot who flew in Vietnam. Edit: whoa, probably should have checked the date on that post [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
MTFDarkEagle Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Currently reading "Viper Pilot" by Dan Hampton and I can tell that 300 pages is too short. I'm at about 130 pages now and hate to put it down. I'm sure he has many more stories that he could have put in there. Great book so far I highly recommend it! Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread

Vampyre Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) Gunship Ace by Al Venter.... Great book that really does a good job of telling the story of Neall Ellis and his exploits as a helo pilot for South Africa's in its border war and his path to becoming a mercenary for hire in Africa, Asia and even Europe. Would be a great book to base a DCS campaign off of... http://www.amazon.com/GUNSHIP-ACE-Neall-Helicopter-Mercenary/dp/1612000703 EDIT: I forgot to say it is a true story Edited June 19, 2014 by Vampyre Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills. If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! "If at first you don't succeed, Carrier Landings are not for you!"
Cali Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Currently reading "No easy Day" by "Mark Owen" The Autobiography of a Navy Seal: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden and other stories. rubblebeam Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 "Matterhorn: A novel of the Vietnam war" by Karl Marlantes is an excellent book. "Vietnam: The definitive oral history told from all sides: by Christian G. Appy "Street Without Joy: The French debacle in Indochina" Bernard B. Fall As others have said "Chickenhawk" Robert Mason I'm currently reading "The Nimrods: A-26 Nimrods and the secret war in Laos" You can guess where my main interest is. Those are the picks for me from my extensive Vietnam war library. I highly recommend Matterhorn Good Grief
Yurgon Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Woah, I can't believe this wasn't mentioned before: Stick and Rudder: An Explanation of the Art of Flying by Wolfgang Langewiesche. It was written in 1944 and obviously some of his points don't apply to, say, fighter jets in the same way they applied to props. But I think this is essential reading for anyone even remotely interested in aviation and should be mandatory reading for any real life pilot.
VTJS17_Fire Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Reading "Apache" by Ed Macy at the moment. On the forum, yes, definitely, that's how I first heard about it. But within 60 or so posts I would have expected it to show up in this thread. Well, now it has. :)
ENO Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Like others, I'm a huge, huge fan of A-10s over Kosovo, Warthog and A-10s over Afghanistan- having read all of them a bunch of times... I find they help me develop reasonably accurate missions ideas as well as learn a lot about how they work together. At the end of "...over Afghanistan" they mention that the first A-10C had arrived and "the A-10 had gone digital..." I'm wondering was there going to be a sequel or is there one already? "ENO" Type in anger and you will make the greatest post you will ever regret. "Sweetest's" Military Aviation Art
