I'll be firing it up in about 30 mins, to try the Huey and F86

Will report back after my flight

You wouldn't be able to by any chance use a camera in Marco/Close up mode to take a picture of the screen through the lens would ya?

Now if the Rift were 1440p, your vision would get better by 1440/1080, or 33%, giving you 20/90 vision. A 4K Rift? Almost 20/30 vision. 8K? Nearly 20/15, you could be a pro baseball player! Or a jet pilot...

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that perspective. I found that really interesting. Let's hope for a 4k ~ Rift now ;)

If it is 4k though, I'm assuming I'll be waiting for the 880ti to get semi-reasonable frame rates?

The flip side is they also hope to increase FOV which will further reduce pixel density and make the perceived resolution worse. As a matter of interest what does a typical set of NVGs end up at on the Snellen scale?

looking at page 7 it seems a trained user can accurately perceive what is equivalent to about 20/30 consistently.

My point is that I wouldn't throw away my cockpit yet, if I'd built one. The Rift provides something new and awesome at the moment, but it isn't what it's supposed to be just yet. I'd say it will be very close in 5-6 years, but don't quote me on it lol. I'm thinking that with Sony's Morpheus in development, Valve's prototype, and strong interest from all across the board, these things could be the next big thing when the next game consoles/consumer entertainment platforms roll around in that time frame. In the meantime HMD's actually provide a relatively inexpensive presence experience, if you're not paying out of your nose on Ebay for a DK2. :P

Ummmmm, don't actually own a camera. I can try and get something with my Iphone if that would help though.

Just watching a program with the misses,( got to get those brownie points ) then I'll hopefully be wheels up about 22:00 ish.

LOL. I'm "banking" mine right now. Already told the Warden that she's a Rift Widow for a while. LOL

The result: you are close to legally blind in the 1080p Rift.

Ok then, I've been flying for a good 90 mins, and tested out the Huey, F86 and P51. Sadly no photos, as I couldn't get a decent one. Sorry will try again tomorrow.

First impressions, well it's a huge improvement over DK1, however there us still a long way to go yet before the visuals are fully useful. While you can make out the artificial horizon, and the hands on the dial, sadly I still can't read any writing any of the instruments, which is disappointing. I wasnt expecting to be able to read the small writing on the centre console but was hoping instruments would be clearer.

That said, it's still more than possible to do a cold and dark startup in these aircraft, certainly after a few months of practise it should be 2nd nature to all of us. :) I tried both lenses and to be honest couldn't really see a difference between them. I always thought I had pretty good eyesight, but now I'm not so sure. ;)

The feeling of immersivness and the full 3D cockpit is just stunning. Looking over the edge of the cockpit in the F86 or P51 and seeing the curved fuselage perfectly in proportion in just mind blowing, and the feeling of height when hoving the Huey was really there. I honestly felt I was a few 100 Ft off the ground. I felt like I should be able to reach up and touch the cockpit it felt that real, and as a taste of things to come this just proves to me that VR is finally here to stay. :)

Now the resolution at the moment, is only good for joyrides and low level flight. I would say if you want to fight with it, then you're gonna die, quickly. As has been said before here, it's almost impossible to pick out your target.

The screen door effect is still there, although greatly reduced and to be honest it didn't subtract from the immersivness at all.

The workaround does work well though and it's great that DCS can work with the DK2.

Overall, am I impressed, HELL YES. Am I disappointed, ummmmm slightly, but I think that's due to me getting my hopes up to high for the difference the increased res would make.

Don't get me wrong, it's leaps and bounds above the DK1, and it does add a whole different sim experience, and one that I never thought in my wildest dreams, I would ever get to experience in my own home.

The head tracking is pretty much perfect, in fact I never had any issues with going out of range of the camera. The only issue I had was leaning over too far and hitting my head on the desk, when I was trying to focus on the Huey centre console.

Oculus Rift is almost there, the DK2 has pretty much everything the home user could possible want, now once they find the perfect visuals with this system it will be the perfect simming hardware.

At the moment I would liken the DK2 to a Mustand with an Allison engine, the potential is showing, but can't quite be reached yet.

We just need to find the DK2's Merlin for the true throughbred to turn up, and I'm fairly confident that it will happen.

Can I recommend the DK2, well so long as you're aware of the limitations, yes without a shadow of a doubt. So long as you just want to experience flying, rather than fighting with your aircraft then there isn't anything that I feel even comes close for the home user with limited room and funds.

Now I still have to try Asseto Corsa, Star Citizen and Elite dangerous and I'm positive that the DK2 will provide stunning immersion in these games as well.

I will admit though, that a lot of the blurry ness could be caused by my settings, as I did really just guess at the best ones.

The wife has given the green light for purchasing the next garget. Looking forward to CV1!

Hopefully the resolution will be high enough then. I guess I can live with the rest of the problems...

For the love of pete! Please tell me how to get mine working. I can get as far as seeing the top half of my screen in Oculus mode, with no tracking working. thats in extend desktop mode.

It wont work at all in Direct mode. I hope someone can help! It wont even recognize my DK2 when in Direct mode.

You might want to put your Rift monitor in portrait mode

Set the DK2 to ‘Extended Mode’ in the Oculus Config Tool by going to Tools > Rift Display Mode = ‘Extend Desktop to the HMD’

Go to Task Manager > Processes > Scroll down and select ‘wscript.exe’ then click [END PROCESS]

Do the same for ‘OVRService.exe’

What did you set for screen resolution / Multiple displays? orientation?

To answer my own question, I killed those two processes.

Yanked my main monitor cable and configured VR for 1080 / 75hz / portrait.

Problem comes in that FOV for each eye is rather limited so I can't see anything outside of it. I had to peck my way to DCS icon and then to fast action...

To describe visuals. I have 55 inch monitor and if I move my face 5-7 inches from it, I will see pixels. Same with VR. But there is very strong depth perception. Everything stands out. Tracking is wonderful; it doesn't care about external light or such. But unlike with TrackIR, now its hard to look around because your neck just doesn't twist 180 degrees. Checking 6 requires movement of entire body.

More to follow....

Hi guys, sorry for the late answers, went to bed. :) in answer to how to get DCS working with the DK2, I used this work about.

Then load DCS World

I made sure the oculus rift tick box was ticked in DCS options.

My display control panel, I have set at 1920 x 1080, extend displays with the Oculus rift in Landscape ( flipped )

All dcs world settings are running on high, no idea of framerate as I didn't check but it was fluid. I will be trying different graphical settings later today as since I can't see more than 5 miles away from the aircraft, not much point in having the program render it. :)

Hope that helps.

Appreciate the user experiences. It is more or less what I expected to hear ('see?'). Thanks for taking the time and letting us (the DK2-less) know what it's like. The times I spent hovering my mouse-pointer over the 'purchase' button....

I'm happy to wait until they release the Consumer Version... and I expect even that one doesn't completely satisfy my needs except for just flying about and doing touch and go's. Hopefully Intel/AMD will get off the mobile-bandwagon for a little bit and re-new their efforts in enhancing desktop performance. Exciting times!
