FSKRipper Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Thanks guys, that was my main problem with the VR options. If Oculus is able to make me look behind my chair and show me the tail of my future F-14 by LNS instead of breaking lock after 45° like TrackIR I will be a happy customer. Who needs a whole room to track as in Steam VR when flying jets :music_whistling: i9 9900K @ 5,0GHz | 1080GTX | 32GB RAM | 256GB, 512GB & 1TB Samsung SSDs | TIR5 w/ Track Clip | Virpil T-50 Stick with extension + Warthog Throttle | MFG Crosswind pedals | Gametrix 908 Jetseat [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Chivas Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 My VR chair will definitely need some sort of swivel mechanism, as I no longer have the flexibility required to easily check six. TrackIR is an old mans crutch. :)
vicx Posted July 16, 2015 Posted July 16, 2015 its pretty cool standing up Hahaha one of the first things I did in the Rift in DCS. Knees almost went a bit wobbly when my head went through the roof of the Su-25 and I could see the aircraft from the outside. Then I put my arms out ... look ma I'm flyin.

Kreator Posted July 26, 2015 Posted July 26, 2015 (edited) Hi all Having bought DCS World and thoroughly enjoying the realism of this sim I purchased the Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS - next up I was going to buy the TrackIR Pro 5 but then I found the DK2 (aware of the consumer version release end of year, start of 2016) - is it worth buying the DK2 for now over the TrackIR and then the consumer version when it is released (I'm fine with buying both) or is the DK2 simply not playable in DCS World? I would also be using it (hopefully) in ArmA 3 and Elite Dangerous. What is the hit like on FPS, I'm running DCS World on high settings with the following rig: AMD FX8350 4GHz, 32GB RAM, ATI Radeon R9 390, Intel SSDs Also on a side note will the FPS likely improve on my rig when DCS 2.0 is released as I read DCS 1.0 is CPU bound whilst DCS 2.0 shifts it to the natural GPU bound. Appreciate any opinions. Thanks Edited July 26, 2015 by Kreator
wormeaten Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I don't have DK2 or TrackIR but simple logic and common seance tells you not to buy TrackIR. DK2 is just double price of TrackIR but give much much more. So will be better choice definitely. Should you buy now DK2 when CV1 is around the corner? I have same question here and even was thinking about starting new thread with DCS pilots impressions about using oculus rift or similar VRset. I don't care about technical specification. Something what is good for some VR immersion maybe is not good for flight sim. I never find on DCS forums somebody discussing about that. VR have its own pro and cons same as monitor or large TV screens. For example with 4K TV 65" you will get 100deg. FOV if you place it about 25" to 30" in front of you. This will be the same sharpness as 27" 1920x1080 monitor. I think you should wait bit more and use your webcam for headtracking and use FTnoIR or Opentrack free software. This will save you 160$ or if you don't have webcam buy PS3eye for 20$ so this will save you 140$ minimum. If you got good 5" smartphone with resolution of screen minimal 1920x1080 you can try this google cardboard solution. http://www.amazon.com/Leegoal-Universal-Virtual-4-0-5-7inch-Smartphones/dp/B00WQEGLCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437974703&sr=8-1&keywords=Virtual+Reality+Video+Glasses+for+4.0-5.7inch+Smartphones you will need as well app for it like trinus gyre like in this video. It is not DK2 but close but good alternative to kill the time till CV1.
wormeaten Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 (edited) Here some more examples of using smartphone and Trinus Gyro app. It is nor DCS but it is Shit thunder. and here is DCS Edited July 27, 2015 by wormeaten

I'm much more satisfied with a triple monitor setup vs the DK2. vicx Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Should you buy now DK2 when CV1 is around the corner? No. CV1 isn't exactly just around the corner BUT you should still wait. The experience between DK2 and Vive/CV1 will be night and day. It isn't just resolution, for CV1 -the lenses are much better (no chromatic aberration, less distortion and the sweet spot for perfect focus is much larger) -more comfortable to wear -built in audio including mic The Vive will be a near identical package but using different tracking technology. I prefer the Vive tracking technology BUT which headset will have the better support in DCS? To see this you will have to wait. The DK2 is worth acquiring at this point only if you are developing software or assets for VR and you want a headstart.
LuSi_6 Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Nice little corner. Pedals lying too flat, maybe? Thx! no, they're just fine :) :pilotfly: Warthog HOTAS, Saitek Pedals, Oculus Rift :joystick:
PiedDroit Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 (edited) Thx! no, they're just fine :) I confirm, the "flatter" you get, the more confortable, as you're more in line with the pedals mechanism. BTW I tried the OR with a friend recently (DK2), immersion was much better than with his 3 screens setup, only thing lacking is a zoom, otherwise, even with slightly better resolution you won't see anything... I had glasses too, quite a wide frame and they fit OK. Edited August 6, 2015 by PiedDroit

PiedDroit Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 Hi PiedDroit.. There was no zoom with a button? But can you lean towards the gunsight or dash? Thanks! Hi Brewnix, Unfortunately the zoom with a button doesn't work yet in DCS + Oculus Rift. Yes I could lean toward the instruments to read them, with normal posture I could see the instruments but I couldn't distinguish the numbers on the scales. When leaning on the instrument I could read the numbers (but I had to be quite "close"). For distant objects the zoom is mandatory as leaning doesn't improve anything (I had to play with labels in order to see them). I'll try to get a picture that demonstrates the actual resolution of the cockpit, I'll post it here when I have it.

Maybe is there a field of view adjustment you can use like I use in IL2 Clod? Eh no FOV adjustment should have check before I posted last..... Wonder what's the deal I would have figured the zoom was a game adjustment and the viewing peripheral should except the change from game. Thanks for your time. plehmann Posted August 8, 2015 Posted August 8, 2015 It will be interesting to see how things go with the next release from Oculus on the 20th August and coupled with win 10 too..
DerekSpeare Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Still no direct mode for me, but I took down the three screens for one 144hz screen and recommend that folks consider this as an option. It appears that there is some improvement. DerekSpeare Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 One of my brothers has a 144Hz screen, and the smoothness is amazing coupled with +100 fps. I'm going to run some FPS tests later this week. I don't have old numbers from the previous screens, but the new numbers may be guiding for those who are interested. There's a slight bit if judder when looking near the main part of the cockpit, but that's it. What a clever device! It seems to eliminate the need of eye tracking. It will be interesting to see how VR has progressed in the coming years. DerekSpeare Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 (edited) SUCCESS! Running in Direct mode now. I discovered that when uninstalling the Oculus drivers that I had forgotten to uninstall the Displaylink drivers and that they were still there despite the fact that I pulled out the USB screen requiring them to be there. Some folks may have had trouble with Displaylink drivers and they do not always get along. Anyhow, if you have them and are not using them, kill them...kill with fire or whatever it takes... The Oculus Runtimes 0.6.0.1 are reinstalled and all is going as it should be in Direct now. It's quite nice to finally have conquered this ugly beast that's been lurking for nearly a year since day one with the Oculus. I had thought it was the combination of nvidia surround and the oculus not liking each other, but I had overlooked the presence of the Displaylink drivers in my assumption. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't go back to the three screens :D And after some testing I see that DCS does not run in Direct mode :/ What are the plans for when Extended is scrapped with this next update of the Oculus Runtimes to v0.7? vicx Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 DCS does not run in Direct mode Well Direct mode requires at least DirectX 10/11 so it can't be implemented any sooner than DCS 1.5.
